Lesson Title: Centripetal Force
1. Lesson Introduction
According to Newtons second law of motion, acceleration is produced by a net force. The net
force and the acceleration must be in the same direction. If applied to uniform circular motion, the
acceleration becomes the centripetal acceleration and the net force. Since it is also directed toward the axis
of rotation. It also becomes the centripetal force.
Centripetal Force is the force that keeps the object moving in a circular path. When the distinction
between the tangential speed and angular speed is applied, the equation can be:
mv 2
F c= r Where: (Fc) is the centripetal force measured in newton (N)
(m) is the mass in kilograms (kg)
(v) is the tangential speed in meter per second(m/s)
(r) is the radius measured in meter (m)
ACTIVITY
I. Directions: Match the following terms with the correct definition. Write the letter of the correct answer in
the space provided.
________1. Angular speed a. The force that keeps the object moving in a circular path.
________2. Tangential speed b. The number of times of an object rotates or revolves per unit
of time.
________3. Newton’s 2nd law of motion c. The speed of an object moving in linear motion.
________4. Centripetal Force d. The distance traveled per unit time in the case of a circular
path.
________5. Linear speed e. Investigates the relationship of force and mass in the object’s
acceleration.
Day 3
Lesson Title: Centripetal Force
ACTIVITY
1. A stone which has a mass of 1.27 kg is tied to a rope of 9 m and moved in a circular motion. If it is moving at the
rate of 5 m/s. What is the centripetal force acting on it?
3. What is the centripetal force of an 9000-kg train, running at a speed of 27.8 m/s and rounding a curve with a
curvature radius of 150 m?
