Traditions
As a predominantly Roman Catholic country, most Honduran cities will have an annual
celebration to honor their patron saints. These celebrations in Honduras are lively, and
include parades and shows; as the biggest event in the country that all Hondurans love is the
annual carnival that takes place in La Ceiba,
Holy Week
This festival is a week-long celebration in March or April each year, depending on the
Christian calendar. The best place to witness it is, without a doubt, the Honduran town of
Santa Rosa de Copán, which is located near the Copan ruins. There are six separate pageants
here that recreate biblical events from the Passover and the effort and detail is a real show.
Baleada
The baleada is one of the traditional and typical foods of Honduras, it is definitely to require a
Honduran tradition to have some freshly made baleadas for breakfast and bought at the corner
stall.
Made from a flour tortilla, with fried beans, egg and butter; This dish is simple but delicious
for any occasion. Other versions of the baleada include fried plantain, avocado, chorizo, or
meat.
The tradition of the "cuchumbos" is to exchange gifts between various people, whether at
work, family or friends.
National Identity Month is celebrated in the department of Lempira, with multiple events and
activities that exalt Honduran identity, keeping traditions alive.
Likewise, this festivity honors the exploits of Cacique Lempira, known as the "Lord of the
Mountains", and one of the characters who fought the most for the Honduran homeland and
territory.
Among the activities that take place is the International Festival of Arts and Culture,
popularly known as "Gracias Convoca".
Likewise, there are parades, live music, dances, traditional games, gastronomy, cultural
activities, floats, murals, the election of the beautiful Indian woman, dance and national
identity contests.
