LESSON
PERSONAL HYGIENE

Personal hygiene involves those practices performed by an individual to

care for one's bodily health and wellbeing through cleanliness. Motivations for
personal hygiene practice include reduction of personal illness, healing from
personal illness, optimal health and sense of wellbeing, social acceptance and
prevention of spread of illness to others.

WAYS TO ACHIEVE PERSONAL HYGIENE

1. Washing and cutting hair regularly. It will give you a neat look and of
course, you are washing away any dirt that your hair accumulated for the
day. Don’t just over wash it to avoid removing the natural oils on your scalp.

2. Regular visit to a dentist. Twice a year is recommended. This will keep

your teeth and gums healthy aside from brushing your teeth three times a
day.

3. Take a bath every day. You can do it before going to school or before
you go to sleep. This will help you remove body odor and dirt on your body.
4. Use deodorant or antiperspirant. Deodorant protects against odor while
antiperspirant helps to control sweat and odor.

5. Wash your hands properly. Do it religiously because it can help you

avoid sickness and stop you from spreading germs.

6. Trimming nails. If you work in the food service, trimming nails is a

must. It will also you avoid sickness and stop you from spreading germs.
Germs might be hiding under your nail’s free edges.

7. Keeping hand sanitizer/alcohol and facial tissue with you. Travel sizes
will come handy especially when you’re sick. It will prevent the spread of
germs from touching things.

8. Using separate towels for different purposes. Don’t use the towel for
wiping your hands in wiping dishes and vice versa. It will only spread germs.
9. Avoid working if you have wound in your hand. Liquids from the wound
contains millions of harmful bacteria that can cause poisoning if in contact
with foods.

10. Keep hands out of food, if not possible, wear disposable gloves. Again,
this is to avoid transferring microorganism to our foods.

11. Avoid smoking while working with food. The ashes may drop into the
food that will cause contamination or poisoning.

12. Wear appropriate clothes at work. If you are working with foods, avoid
long sleeves and be sure you use your clean apron. Also, wear comfortable
and clean shoes. Don’t forget to wear your PPE (Personal Protective
Equipment)

Let’s do a self-assessment. This activity will help you think about how
frequently you perform personal hygiene. The goal of this assessment is to
help you learn about personal hygiene by noticing the patterns and
recognizing what needs to be improved or what needs more attention.
There are no right or wrong answers. Just be honest about answering
the activity.
