5.4.4 Aliglimetit at Connections. Drift pins. jacking equipment, and the like, shall not be used to bring
improperly fahricated members into place. A moderate degree of reaming and cutting, however, may be
employed to correct minor misfits o n l y if, in the opinion of the Engineer, this will not be detrimental
to the strength or appearance of the finished structure.
5.4.5 Repairs to Protective Coatings. Repairs to protective coatings shall be so done that the finished
structure is as soundly protected as it would have been if the coating had not been damaged.

6. TOLERANCES
6.1 GENERAL
6.1.1 Verification of Dimensions. Verificatj.on of dimensions shall he carried out
a) on aluminium that is at normal temperature (see 2.3). measurements being made with a tape that is at
normal temperature and tensioned to 70 N;
b) for erection, within 3 h after the time of sunrise or within 3 h before the time of sunset, or at such
time when, in the opinion of the Engineer, the effect of the sun is minimal.
Distortion caused by the sun's rays striking one side of a member or structure shall be taken into
account, and measur-ementsshall be made only at times when this effect is non-existent or of no
consequence.
6.1.2 Fabrication and Assembly Tolerance. The permissible deviatjon on the dimensions of components (such a s
gussets, cross-bracing, etc.) and on the location of bolt holes in components and elements of a structure
shall be 2 2 mm. (See also 5.4.4.) Holes for connections shall be aligned as specified in 5.3.2.
6.1.3 Rounding up of PDs. All calculated permissible deviations shall be rounded up to the next whole
millimetre.

6.2 TOLERANCES ON DIMENSIONS, ACCURACY OF ERECTION, ETC.

6.2.1 Extruded Sections. The tolerances on cross-sectional dimensions of extruded sections shall comply with
the relevant requirements of BS 1474 or BS 1470, as applicable.
6.2.2 Other Tolerances. The tolerances on all dimensions (other than o€ extruded sections), accuracy of
erection, location of holding-down bolts, location of column bases, levels, etc., shall be as given
below:

8. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT

8.1 GENERAL
8.1.1 Basis of Measurement. Work involvjng structural aluminium members and plate work will be measured by the
mass of aluminium. Claddinq will he measured by the area covered and sundry items will be measured by
the number, mass, or area, dependinq on the nature of the item. (See also 8.1.3.)
Unless otherwise stated, gussets will be measured on the basis of the minimum enclosing rectangle.
SABS 1200 HE-1983 8
Structural aluminiumwork

8.1.2 Repetitive work. Where there is considerable repetition of articles of the same description and mass
(e.g. towers, masts, ladders, frames, etc.) that are measured by mass, the number of such articles and
the mass or length, as applicable, of each will be stated in the schedule.
8.1.3 Basis of Mass Calculation. The mass of structural aluminium work will be calculated on the basis of the
nominal mass/unit length as stated in the manufacturer's handbook or, where not so stated, the mass will
be calculated from an aluminium density of 2 700 kg/m3. The mass of fittings such as cleats, gussets,
battens, and stiffeners will be added to the mass of the members.
Tolerances for rolling margins and other permissible deviations will be neglected for the purposes of
mass calculation.
No deductions will be made for holes for fasteners o r for milling or planing and no additions will be
made for rolling margin, waste weld metal, or shop fasteners.
