1.2 MARKET DEFINITION

Sustainable aviation fuels are alternative fuels developed with sustainable processes that can reduce the carbon footprint
of the aviation industry caused by conventional fossil fuels. These fuels are drop-in fuels that can be used in existing aircraft
engines and fuel systems without making any changes. SAF is produced from sustainable feedstocks like municipal
wastes, waste oils, industrial exhaust gases, biomass residues, etc. Depending on feedstocks used, production methods,
and supply chain utilized, SAF reduces up to 80% of carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels currently
being used. SAF is currently approved to be used with a 50% blend in aircraft by the American Society for Testing and
Materials International (ASTMI) D7566.
This research study focuses on the organized sustainable aviation fuel markets in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific,
Latin America, and the Middle East; it also covers the major spending countries in these regions. The market sizing
includes sales of SAF provided by various players operating in this market.

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL MARKET - FORECAST TO 2030

1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is defined as an alternative jet fuel produced from biological and non-
biological resources. It comprises various approved pathways for production and complete acceptance of
fuels in the aviation industry. Sustainable aviation fuel aims at reduction in CO2 emissions across its
lifecycle and provides economic and social benefits to airlines. The capability of sustainable aviation fuel to
work as drop-in replacements for conventional jet fuel that meet current jet fuel specifications either on its
own or when blended with conventional jet fuel makes it one of the most significant factors for the
adoption and feasibility for airports and airlines. This compatibility of sustainable aviation fuel with existing
aircraft and infrastructure adds value to it over other solutions such as turboelectric propulsion and
improvement in gas turbine engines for reduction in CO2 emissions.

The increasing demand and obligations of the aviation industry to reduce GHG emissions will eventually be
a major factor for the growth of the sustainable aviation fuel market. The sustainable aviation fuel market
is projected to grow from USD XX million in 2021 to USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of XX%.

Apart from a general overview of major companies in this market, this report provides financial analyses
and information about products, technologies, and solutions, as well as recent developments in terms of
contracts & agreements, collaborations & partnerships, and acquisitions of major players in the industry,
Neste (Finland), Gevo (US), Fulcrum BioEnergy (US), World Energy (US), and Velocys (UK) are some of the
leading players covered in this report. The report also provides a competitive leadership mapping in the
sustainable aviation fuel market.

COVID-19 has taken a colossal toll on the world’s economic activity, with individuals, organizations,
governments, and businesses having to adapt to the challenges of the crisis. Air travel restrictions across
various regions for both domestic and international flights have led to inactive fleets across the globe. Like
many other sectors, the sustainable aviation fuel market is also impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The
pandemic created a negative impact on the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel due to increase in the
grounded fleets and financial losses incurred by various stakeholders such as airlines, airport operators,
aircraft, and engine manufacturers. While airlines and other corporations fight to survive and save jobs,
investments in fuel-efficient aircraft and carbon offsets move much further down the list of priorities,
especially as the price of oil has plunged. The investments required for the transition of aviation to a bio-
fueled industry are unlikely to materialize until commercial aviation recovers, and conventional jet fuel
prices increase.

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL MARKET - FORECAST TO 2030

3 MARKET OVERVIEW

3.1 INTRODUCTION
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is derived from various biological and non-biological resources that are
sustainable to nature and meet criteria such as lifecycle carbon emissions reduction, sustainable air travel
for passengers, social & economic benefits to the airlines, and aviation industry’s GHG emission reduction
strategy. SAF is being produced and used in commercial flights every day. The increasing demand and
obligations for the aviation industry to reduce GHG emissions will eventually be a major factor for the
growth of the sustainable aviation fuel market.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) fact sheet, the current volume of SAF
produced is less than XX% of total jet fuel demand. However, these volumes can be increased with
coordinated support, including effective policy frameworks. According to the IATA factsheet, around XX
billion liters of SAF are in forward purchase agreements. A huge value chain of SAF benefits different
stakeholders of the aviation industry such as technology providers, fuel producers, fuel suppliers, fixed
based operators, airlines, airports, etc., thus leading to the growth of the sustainable aviation fuel market,
as fuel is one of the significant cost factors for these stakeholders.

The increase in stringent regulations is leading airlines and airports to adopt more sustainable options
such as the use of alternative jet fuels. The drop-in fuel feature is one of the most significant aspects of
SAF and thus, requires no change in the current fleet of aircraft, which helps airlines implement blended
fuels conveniently in various types of commercial aircraft.

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL MARKET - FORECAST TO 2030

4.1 INTRODUCTION
Based on fuel type, the sustainable aviation fuel market is segmented into biofuel, hydrogen fuel, power to
liquid fuel, and gas to liquid fuel. These fuel types are some of the promising new alternative solutions to
meet the ambitious long-term targets such as a promise of net-zero growth after 2020 and a reduction of
emissions to half of 2005 levels by 2050.

Sustainable aviation fuel is expected to play a crucial role alongside various alternative solutions such as
improved engine technologies and aircraft design, new composite lightweight material, and electric
propulsion in decarbonizing aviation. However, sustainable aviation fuel is considered to be one of the
most viable solutions in the near term due to limitations of infrastructure changes and non-compatibility
with the existing fleet for other alternative solutions. Thus, the industry should capitalize on sustainable
aviation fuel being available before electric and hydrogen technologies to contribute to sustainability
targets.

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL MARKET - FORECAST TO 2030

5 REGIONAL ANALYSIS

5.1 NORTH AMERICA

The North American market has been studied for the US and Canada. North America is considered to have
the largest aircraft fleet with a large number of passengers per year, leading to an increase in aircraft
emissions substantially. To cater to the need for reduction in carbon footprints due to increasing air traffic
and air passengers, the US and Canada are focused on various initiatives to utilize sustainable aviation
fuel. With supportive policies and initiatives to decarbonize aviation emissions, the North American market
is deemed to be one of the strong demand centers for sustainable aviation fuel. Switching to more energy-
dense biofuel to reach the goal of decarbonizing the aviation sector is expected to play a significant role in
reducing GHG concentration across the region.

The number of sustainable aviation fuel initiatives existing in the US and Canada are as follows:

◼ Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuel Initiative (CAAFI) is a coalition of airlines, aircraft and
engine manufacturers, energy producers, researchers, international participants, and the US
government agencies, which aims to enhance energy security and environmental sustainability
for aviation through SAF.
◼ Midwest Aviation Sustainable Biofuels Initiative (MASBI) aims to define a roadmap for the
development of advanced sustainable biofuels in the US Midwest. The MASBI Steering Group
comprises United Airlines, Boeing, the Chicago Department for Aviation, Clean Energy Trust, and
Honeywell UOP. In addition, over 30 other stakeholders are also participants.
◼ Canada’s Biojet Supply Chain Initiative is already paving the way with a holistic approach that
contributes to R&D, financing, knowledge transfer, certification process, and enabling policy
development for sustainable aviation fuel. The project studied the feasibility of integrating SAF
sourced from used cooking oil into the co-mingled hydrant system of an airport, along with
developing operational best practices, which can be implemented in Canadian airports to
efficiently integrate SAF in blend levels for carbon-neutral growth.

5.1.1 COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS IN NORTH AMERICA

The North American aviation industry includes crude-oil, mineral-based oil, synthetic fluids, and other raw
material producers; sustainable aviation fuel producers; aircraft and engine manufacturing companies;
aftermarket service providers; airlines, airport managing companies, and companies involved in the
management of airports and aircraft. The factors fueling the growth of the market before the COVID-19
pandemic included the demand for low-cost petroleum products to cater to the increased aircraft fleet.
However, the outbreak of COVID-19 led to a discouraging growth rate in the sector.

The COVID-19 crisis has had a profound impact on every aspect of life in the US, and the aviation industry
is no exception. Almost all segments of the North American aviation industry experienced a decline in
revenue generation during the outbreak. The slowdown in physical operations at production units impacted
both upstream and downstream business units of various companies. To tide over COVID-19 and industry
slowdown, North American oil & gas pipeline companies are reducing CapEX of upcoming projects.
Additionally, these operators have also been deferring financial investment decisions (FIDs) and are laying
off their workforce to keep operations going. According to an article published by Bloomberg in March
2020, aviation companies such as airlines and cargo carriers were seeking around USD XX billion in loans
and grants, along with additional tax changes, to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
