CHAPTER ONE
Mununshi Banana Scheme (MBS) is a large farm in Mwense District of Luapula Province
thatwas launched by the Zambian Government in 1967 under the First National Development
Plan(FNDP) (1966-1970). It is 50 kilometres north of Mwense Township and 100kilomestres
away from Kawambwa Tea Estate now Kawambwa Tea Company ( KTC) in the northern part
of Kawambwa district. The entire scheme lies within the Luapula Valley. The extent of the
scheme is 406 hectares with class one soil type, suitable for irrigation.
The scheme started as a banana grower but later maize and Irish potatoes were also introduced.
The produce was meant to be supplied to both local and distant markets and in turn provide
direct and indirect employment to the local people.
Luapula Province has good soil and ideal climate for banana production especially along the
valley. Banana are one of the most common fruits on the markert and have been known to be
on demand on both the local and international markets. Thus ythis field project report focuses
on the postive contributions of the Mununshi Banana Plantation to the socio-economic
development of the people in Zambia as a country.

Aim of the study
The aim of this study is to find out the positive impacts of Mununshi Banana Plantation in
Luapula province .
Objectives
To find out the the stages of banana production and the economic benefits of the
Mununshi Banana Plantation in Luapula province.
To find out the extent to which The Mununshi Banana Plantation in Luapula province
benefits the workers and surrounding communities.
To assess how the possible challenges and solutions to the banana plantation in
Luapula province.

LOCATION OF THE STUDY AREA
The study was conducted in Luapula province District of Zambia, located in Northern
Province. Luapula province is now the a hub of most of the farming activities and most of the
people depend of small scale and commercial farming and its home to the Mununshi Banana
Plantation.

CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The research instruments that were used in the collection of data are, an interview schedules
alongside with observation. Observation was used by the researcher to assess the state of the
environment around Luapula province. The research employed both qualitative and
quantitative research methods.
Target Population
The target population for this study was about 4 workers at the Mununshi Banana Plantation in
Luapula province.
The researcher used simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques to draw a

BANANA PRODUCTION STAGES
Banana fruit production goes through several stages and produces up to different species such
as the Cavendish is the variety that is common in supermarkets , the Lady Fingers that are
very tall and slender plants and have smaller, sweeter fruit and the Plantains that are cooking
bananas. They are drier and more starchy.
The plants are grown as suchers 2–6 m (6–20 ft) tall. Bananas are not real trees, not even
palm trees, even though they are often called banana palms. banana plant takes about 9
months to grow up and produce a bunch of bananas.

Bananas are an economically important plant family that just like maize, wheat, rice, and
sorghum, and many forage crops. It is native to the warm, temperate tropical regions of Africa,
India, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea.

Some of the products produced from Banana
At Mununshi Banana Plantation most of the Bananas is cultivated are sold to the nearby
markets amnd suppermakets.Some are sold to other towns and across the borders.
Raw Bananas: chewed to extract the juice. Bananas juice is a combination of fresh juice,
extracted by hand or small mills from the Bananas.
Syrup: a traditional sweetener in soft drinks, now largely used to put on bread for breakfast it
is also used as a sweetener and a syrup accompanying other foods, such as cheese or cookies
and its by products are used to feed animals.
