ATTENTION
Observe Precautions
for Handling
Electrostatic
Sensitive Devices

CAUTION

Handling of Electrostatic--sensitive Semiconductor Devices

Certain semiconductor devices used in the equipment are liable to damage due to
static voltage. Observe the following precautions when handling these devices in their
unterminated state, or sub--units containing these devices:

1) Persons removing sub--units from an equipment using these devices must be

earthed by a wrist strap connected to the earthing point provided on the
equipment.

2) Soldering irons used during the repair operations must be low voltage types with
earthed tips and isolated from the mains voltage by a double insulated trans--
former.

3) Outer clothing worn must be unable to generate static charges.

4) Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) fitted with these devices must be stored and
transported in anti--static bags.

WARNING
All outside operated electrical/electronic equipment must be checked once per
week for intruded humidity or moisture.
In case of intruded humidity or moisture disconnect the equipment from the
power supply and contact the local RAYTHEON ANSCHÜTZ service organisa-
tion.

3 Description

3.1 Application
The Bearing Repeater Compass, Type 133--407, indicates the ship’s heading, i.e.:
-- the direction of the ship’s fore--and--aft line -- ascertained and electrically transmitted by
the gyro compass/GPS--compass and referred to GEOGRAPHICAL NORTH --
independently from the mounting site of the compass
-- the direction of the ship’s fore--and--aft line -- ascertained and electrically transmitted by
the magnetic compass -- independently from the mounting site of the magnetic compass
It receives the heading signal from the gyro compass via a serial interface RS 422 with abso-
lute and unambiguous values. Heading indications are analog (on the card) and digital (digi-
tal display).
Synchronizing the card and varying the brightness intensity is to be made via the key on the
casing.
In addition to this, the repeater compass recognizes an interface acc. to NMEA and automati-
cally changes the operating mode.

3.2.1 Casing

The casing consists of seawater--resistent, glass--fiber--reinforced plastic. A counterweight

has been fastened to the bottom of the casing; this way the gimbal--suspended bearing re-
peater compass compensates the ship’s roll and pitch motions. The cable entry is to be found
in the bottom of the casing. Two pivots -- displaced by 180 -- are laterally mounted on the
casing and permit gimbal suspension of the bearing repeater compass. The bezel is made of
plastic and carries an engraved, hull--bound 360 graduation for taking relative bearings. The
hull--bound lubber line is mounted to the bezel.
Via a key on the casing the repeater compass is configured and the illumination of the card is
dimmed.

3.2.2 360 Card

The 360 card has a scale (see Fig. 3--1) marked every 10 and with a graduation by degrees;
in addition, it shows a 360 scale in mirror writing for bearing purposes. The card is translu-
cent; this way, the 14 LEDs arranged below the card ensure good illumination. In the range of
the 4--digit 7--segment indication the card disk is transparent; therefore the heading value is
easy to read. On the bezel a hull--bound 360 scale for taking relative bearings is engraved.

3.3 Principle of Operation

The bearing repeater compass receives the heading information from the gyro or magnetic
compass by serial heading transmission and with absolute and unambiguous values via the
serial interface acc. to NMEA or heading serial. The bearing repeater compass recognizes
an NMEA interface and accommodates itself to this automatically. Selecting the telegram
type via a configuration is not necessary.
The serial heading information is converted on the bearing repeater PCB into steps for the
stepping motor.
In addition to the analog heading indication by the 360 card, the bearing repeater compass
has been equipped with a digital, non--desynchronizable heading indication (see Fig. 3--1).
The corresponding heading signal processing is also performed on the bearing repeater
PCB.
This digital display, furthermore, signalizes a possible failure in the bearing repeater by a de-
fined display code.

Via the key, several functions can be selected:

-- 1st function: DIMMING
This function is always applied and is not specially indicated.

-- 2nd function: TEST

The completeness of the digital display is tested; the current software
version, the current interface and the operation mode is indicated.

-- 3rd function: CORRECTION

By means of the key, the indicated value of the card is corrected ac-
cording to the digital display. Approx. 7 s after the last card adjustment,
the function CORRECTION will be terminated. The DIM function is then
again available as primary function.
-- 4th function: CONFIGURATION
Operational modes and telegram formats (NMEA) can be adjusted by
means of the key.

Desynchronization of the card display is only possible as the result of a stepping error
from the stepping motor; it is not possible as the result of an interruption in heading trans-
mission or in the power supply.
The mirror--writing scale on the 360 card and the hull--bound scale for relative bearings
found on the bezel permit direct readings of compass value and value of the relative
bearings by means of a bearing sight. In case of more comfortable bearing sights (e.g.
Raytheon Anschütz, Type 143 -- 021 / -- 024), the normal 360 card scale can be used, as
the reflected heading value is corrected via prisms.
