Dear Adele,
I’m having a great time with my brother in Bristol. I think it’s the most interesting place I’ve ever visited.
Sean is at university here and I’m staying with him. He’s been here for three years and has made a lot of friends. He’s
introduced me to most of them. They’re all very friendly.
I’ve been to the museum and have learned a lot of things about natural history and wild animals. The paintings in the
different rooms were wonderful. After walking around all the galleries, I had a soft drink and a snack. That was good too.
All the best,
Diana

My summer story
It was midnight when I awoke from a dreamless sleep. My family and I were staying in a beach penthouse on the coast
of Myrtle Beach. Since no one else was awake, I snuck1 out to a party.
When I got there, I was overwhelmed at how incredibly awesome it was! At 1.00 a.m. we all went to the beach and got
into the water. And then, standing near the sea, I saw… my parents. They both started yelling at me. Finally, I had the
chance to say, “Please, just forgive me for what I’ve done.”
We all ended up having a really great summer, even though I was grounded for most of it.

Part 1
Student A
My family name is (Martins).
M – A – R – T – I – N – S.
I live in (Ermesinde).
I’m (fifteen years old).
I (don’t) like English very much.
I like hanging out with my friends, going to the cinema, playing video games, doing sport, reading, watching TV, listening
to music… In summer, I enjoy going to the beach to get a suntan.
Last summer holidays I went to the beach with my friends, visited my relatives in the countryside…
Student B
My name is Margarida.
M–A–R–G–A–R–I–D–A
Usually, during the weekends I do a lot of different things. Sometimes, when it’s raining, I watch a film or go to the
cinema. If the weather is good, I invite some friends to eat an ice cream or just to go for a walk.
Yes I do. I play board games with a group of friends on Wednesday.
Well, during my holidays I like to go to the beach. I can’t imagine spending a summer and not feeling the warm sand
under my feet. I really like to be with my friends there. We play volleyball, cards or we just say silly things and laugh.
Yes, most of my free time is spent with my friends. I like being at home, with my parents and my brother, but I have more
fun with my friends when we go out. Usually, during the week I don’t go out because I have to study and there’s a lot of
homework, but whenever I can, at weekends, I go out with them.

Part 2
Student A: I think I should buy a cap for my brother because he always wears one on sunny days. I could give my sister
a tote bag. But she’s very picky with bags.
Student A: Well, maybe you’re right. I’ll give him a black one.
The one he’s got is almost worn out. He’s worn it so much! What about my sister?
Student A: OK, I’ll agree with that. So, I’ll buy a T-shirt for my brother and a watch for my sister.
Part 3
Student A: The picture shows the following sports: football, basketball…
Football is a game played by two teams of 11 players each, which have to score goals by kicking a football into a goal.
The team which scores the most number of goals is the winner. You normally play this game a football pitch (also known
as a football field or soccer field). You need a T-shirt, shorts, football boots, socks and a football to play this game.
Student B: The picture shows some extreme sports: climbing, surfing, bodyboarding, snorkeling, sea kayaking…
Surfing is the sport of riding on a wave on a special board. You can do this sport individually and need a wetsuit, a
surfboard and other accessories. Surfing is both an exciting sport and an excellent workout.
Part 4
Student A: From all the sports shown in the pictures, my favourite is football.
Student B: I also love football because it is a fast game which requires great stamina, foot skills and the ability to control
the movement of a ball. My favourite players are Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal and Wayne Rooney from England.
Student A: I agree with what you’ve said so far. Looking back at the pictures, I’ve played some of the sports they show
such as basketball and volleyball.
Student B: Oh, yes. In our physical education lessons we sometimes play these games. I’ve never tried extreme sports,
though. Some of them may be dangerous.
Student A: Neither have I. But I’d like to try surfing because I enjoy doing water sports or activities, like swimming.
Student B: That’s a good idea. Perhaps we could learn how to surf next summer.
Part 4
Interview with Andrew Garfield
When Andrew Garfield was a little boy, Spider-Man was his hero. So, when he was chosen to play Peter Parker in The
Amazing Spider-Man 2, he was over the moon. He was surprised too, because Spider-Man is from New York and
Andrew grew up near London. Andrew talks to us about his hero, bullies and having two passports.
You read the Spider-Man comics when you were little. Why was he your hero?
I’ve wanted to be Spider-Man since I was three. I always felt I was Peter Parker. He’s great for skinny boys like me. It’s
every skinny’s boy fantasy to fight bigger people and win – and that’s what Peter Parker does!
Were you bullied at school?
Yes, I was bullied in my first school until I was 12. There was a kid who was really mean to me, and I just didn’t
understand why. That’s when I needed ‘Spidey’ in my life – he gave me hope!
Why do so many teens identify with Spider-Man?
Peter Parker, like many teens, doesn’t know who he is. He’s a normal teenage kid rebelling against his situation. Spider-
Man shows us how difficult it is to always be good.
What was it like putting on Spider-Man’s costume?
It was awesome. You realise that it’s a big part for any normal person to fill.
You were born in Los Angeles but you moved to Britain when you were three. You grew up just outside London.
Which do you prefer – the USA or the UK?
I love both places and I feel equally at home in both. I’m lucky to have the choice.
