The Audio Foundation will be holding an informal panel discussion this week. On the panel will be
Richard MacFarlane and Tim Gentles from Rose Quartz, and Programme Leader of Critical Studies
at Elam School of Fine Arts Jon Bywater, all of whom will be talking about recent technological
changes, and the impact that this has had on notions of DIY music culture... new interactions
between DIY techniques and modes of distribution, and styles typically associated with the non-
DIY overground. The Sunday Salon goes down at the Audio Foundation HQ located at 4 Poynton
Terrace in Aucklands upper CBD/K Road just off Pitt St.
In awesome comic book (or graphic novel if you want to be PC about it) news, a local comic artist
and author has made the list. Chris Groszs new release Kimble Bent: Malcontent is published by
Random House NZ and has made number seven on the bestsellers lists of locally published books.
The publication retells the history of Kimble Bent, a little known folkhero and American soldier
during the 1860s. Grosz has previously worked as a political cartoonist and music poster designer,
illustrating for Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Frank Zappa and plenty more reputable names.
More than anything its great to see NZ audiences opening their literature minds and
welcoming more left-of-centre publications and realising that comics arent just the funnies. Mad
excelsior props.

APRA decked out the Auckland Town Hall on Tuesday the
September 13 to honour and celebrate New Zealands
fnest song writing talent in the annual Silver Scrolls. The
always-entertaining Master of Ceremonies Oscar Kightley
guided an evening that weaved in a plethora of musical
interpretation.
Each of the Silver Scrolls fnalists had their work
interpreted by musical peers under the guide of Musical
Director for the night Don McGlashan. These included an
epic heavy metal interpretation of Sounz Contemporary
Music Award winner Lyell Cresswells Concerto For Piano
And Orchestra stylishly thrashed out by kimono wearing
Richie Allan And The Heavy Metal Ninjas.
The jovial Graham Brazier led Hello Sailor to the plinth
to be inducted to the New Zealand Music Hall Of Fame.
Touching speeches about those passed and a memoir by
self-confessed Hello Sailor groupie Peter Urlich made this a
very special occasion. Gin Wigmore teamed up with Steve
Abel And The Chrysalids to perform a strong folksy-blues
rendition of Blue Lady.
The Maioha Award for contemporary Maori song writing
went to Tyna Keelan for Ko Koe. Keelan was somewhat
surprised and was sure to mihi his fellow fnalists Ngahiwi
Apanui and Tiki Taane. The delightful Sandy Mills
performed his song.
Brooke Fraser took out the award most played song in New
Zealand with Something In The Water.
The main event The Silver Scroll went to Dave Baxter for
Avalanche Citys Love Love Love. This is too weird, said
Baxter, not expecting to be up and giving an acceptance
speech. Baxters song was given an a cappella fused gypsy
bohemian rock treatment by Benka Bordovsky Bordello
Band.
Other performers brought the stage to life included newly
home Cut Off Your Hands and Homebrew Crew. John
Rowles closed the night with Cheryl Moana Marie.

Stitchkingdom.com has a load of tidbits and
tidbobs about the upcoming Muppets flm
including character synopses and plenty of trivia
to get you excited for the nostalgiagasm feature.
Did you know Miss Piggy has 12 costume
changes in the flm (more than any other actor)
and that over 120 Muppets will appear in it?
A Party Down reunion could be closer than
weve ever thought. Adam Scott (Henry) has said
that the cast and crew are like 90% there, and
that everyone from the actors and producers all
want to do it. Hopefully it will come to fruition
faster than the still unconfrmed Arrested
Development movie.
Alcon, the production company that bought
the rights to a Blade Runner prequel or sequel
which has Ridley Scott attached to direct, is
planning to reboot none other than Point Break.
Will the infamous line Im not gonna paddle my
way to New Zealand will make the cut?
Duncan Jones less impressive follow-up to
his debut Moon is being turned into a television
series. CBS will be developing Source Code, and
word is its the same style of plot as the flm
someone goes back in time for eight minutes
to solve a mystery. If youve seen the fick, youll
know that the revelation at the end of the flm
doesnt seem all that plausible as structure for
a television series.
of Montreal will be releasing a very limited
edition box set (literally in a box) containing
all of the bands 10 full-length albums.
Only 500 sets will be available for purchase
through Joyful Noise Recordings.
Mike Patton wont be hanging with Faith
No More anytime soon. Hes just announced
the release of his latest flm score, Music
from the Film and Inspired by the Book The
Solitude of Prime Numbers. That is exactly as
it sounds. Guess how the track listing is laid
out? Prime numbers.
Jersey-ites Real Estate will be releasing
their sophomore album Days through
Domino. The impressive album was
produced by Kevin McMahon who has
previously worked with the likes of Titus
Andronicus and The Walkmen. Days is slated
for a mid-October release.
The newest Kate Bush album 50 Words For
Snow is slated for a Monday 21 November
release. The concept album (if you can call it
that) only has seven tracks but a 65 minute
run-time. Each song is a new track and is set
against a background of falling snow. Very
experimental.
After a three-year hiatus, Evanescence will
be releasing their third album through EMI.
The self-titled release follows their debut
album Fallen that took away two Grammy
Awards back in 03, and the less popular
sophomore effort The Open Door.

It can be really diffcult for bands sometimes, all that posturing and
proclaiming your own infnite awesomeness from the rooftops at every
turn, and sure, you may lose integrity the more you do it a bizarre
form of boys crying wolf but its imperative that you have the musical
capability to back it up.
And boy do Kasabian have some tunes.
Formed back at the turn of the millennium, Kasabian were the sort of
lad-band everyone was looking for in the vacuum left by the post-Oasis
boom of the mid-90s, forcibly wrenching the swaggering and cock-
swinging torch from the hands of the Brothers Gallagher and waving
it enthusiastically from the hilltop that the New Musical Express created
for them after the success of their self-titled debut. The mechanical
mastery of Processed Beats and mega-hit Clubfoot eventually led to
the nigh-on concept album Empire and its own posse of chart successes,
increasing the size of a few already-infated egos. Between guitarist and
lead songwriter Serge Pizzorno and typical Midlands lad Tom Meighan,
the pair managed to insult almost every young up-and-coming gun,
asserting that they were the Second Coming (dance music was on its
arse before we came along), all the while letting praise and adoration
rain down upon them, not least of all from Brother Noel himself.
The band, completed by drummer Ian Matthews and bassist Chris
Edwards, seem to fulfl their own prophecies though, packing out
stadiums, releasing chart-topping records and bragging their way
through the music press without so much as a shrug Pizzorno even
writing the score to 2010 gangster-fick London Boulevard during his
months off. Apparently taking anything and everything in their very
lofty stride is a key ingredient to making the Kasabian machine tick
over.
You can always tell when a band like this will release their next record
due to the increasing torrent of self-reverential quotes that spill forth,
and this time is no different with Pizzorno matter-of-factly stating: The
aim was to make a modern classic, one that people can take to their
hearts and sing along to. Its been ffteen or sixteen years since the last
truly classic album, but I think weve done it.
Hes talking about Velociraptor!, their upcoming fourth record which
follows the psychedelic majesty of West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
that spawned some of their biggest hits to date. Judging by leading single
Switchblade Smiles a stab of murderous and haunting electronica
that is equal parts gothic dirge and sneaky pop hit theyre back to the
thunderous roots for which they frst gained notoriety.
It seems impossible for a band such as Kasabian to achieve anything
more than they already have ludicrous claims aside.
But if an asteroid wiped out all of the dinosaurs in one foul swoop, then
it will take something equally as impressive to knock this band from the
top of the food chain.
After three critically-acclaimed albums, British band Kasabian are back to unleash the colossal Velociraptor! on the
world, and they have no doubt it could be one of the best albums of the last decade...

Best of TRACK BY TRACK Written by Serge Pizzorno
DAYS ARE FORGOTTEN
Its the sort of song which will sound great crunching out of the radio.
The lyrics were inspired by hip-hop MCs like Doom and Gift Of Gab.
I love that whole, this is us, and if you dont like it, fuck off attitude.
Days is us stating our case. Theres a line in it which goes Call me a
clich/How right you are. I might be a rocknroll clich but I take pride
in it.
LA FEE VERTE
Its a psychedelic tune about those moments when you look around
and think the dream is over, and the only thing left to do is pull out the
absinthe and head for oblivion. The whole X Factor celebrity culture
thing. Dogs in handbags. There are lyrical references to a few people in
there - Noel Fielding for one.
VELOCIRAPTOR!
Its the natural end to the frst half of the album. A great place to
fip the record over. Its an adrenaline surge, meant to represent this
frightening force bearing down on you, whatever that may be. That
feeling of being chased.
ACID TURKISH BATH (SHELTER FROM THE STORM)
Theres a Native Indian call at the start. Its got that immigrant song feel
to it. We were after that huge John Bonham drum sound to go with it.
Its massive, it stomps on everything else. We wanted to get that crunch
you hear on old Turkish psychedelic records, really full on and in your
face.
MAN OF SIMPLE PLEASURES
This is a really simple song, just guitar, bass and drums. Its traditional
and perfect in a weird way. Theres a bit of a bluesy, country feel to it.
If you know the band or hang around with us it will make sense. Come
round mine for a smash up youll get some Roy Orbison, you know what
I mean?
SWITCHBLADE SMILES
This is full-tilt Kasabian. The title was inspired by this interview with
Morgan Freeman where he described someone as having a switchblade
smile. I knew exactly what he meant. He was talking about one of those
people who seem pretty friendly but you know underneath theyre a
right evil fucker. This song captures that feeling of edginess. You dont
know whats going to happen next.

The latest addition to Jay Bulletproofs respected dubstep portfolio
comes under the banner Dub Me Crazy. He says that its a natural follow-
on from his last album, using the same idea of keeping it local. As this
was written, title track Dub Me Crazy featuring Jessie G had already
registered over 50,000 YouTube hits. There is an undeniable anticipation
for this album, a year in the making.
Bulletproof likes to think of his work as a marriage of genres. The
collaboration and remixes on this album feature an impressive list of
New Zealand music cohorts; the already mentioned Jessie G features
regularly, and her talent joins an artist list that reads more like an
honours plaque. Familiar foor-fllers Computers Want Me Dead, Kidz
In Space, current dubstep scene explorers Crushington and the beautiful
voices of Hollie Smith and Anika Moa all feature. Bulletproof thinks that
its amazing to work with such variety: Its awesome to be able to work
with such a close knit community.
When asked what infuences his styling, he admits that he tries not
to listen to other peoples work. I dont want to be like anyone else, he
muses. Thats probably the secret to his decade-tested success. Refecting
on his own work, Bulletproof acknowledges that it comes down to
the music. His insider advice for new dubstep blood is dont rely on
noises; a golden tid-bit that he practices himself. Concentrating on the
funk and groove has helped him create an album that snubs the current
ambivalent relationship of dubstep and relentless chainsaw styles.
Bulletproof has created the perfect onslaught of bass that would satisfy
all true dubstep fans.
Bulletproof is a DJ frst and foremost. Its all Ive ever done, he says.
Im happiest live. Why? The feeling of everyone raving off to my
music, he comments, is what he gets off on.
There is a busy calendar ahead for Bulletproof, so groupies get
your diaries out. He plans to kick off touring Dub Me Crazy at a show
in Tauranga on September 16, but a more extensive Australian and
New Zealand touring schedule for September and October is due out
soon. Hes also already booked in to set the pace at Homegrown, BW
Campgrounds, and Northern Lights. A good enough excuse to cancel
Christmas and spend the pingers on a roady or three if there ever was
one.
The release of Dub Me Crazy is a bit of a treasure trail; its set to be
released in three different forms. The 16-track standard version will be
available pretty much everywhere, and an iLP version will be exclusively
available at JB HiFi, which will include the standard 16 tracks plus a
further nine to keep the bass hunger at bay. A 24-track version will also
be made available on iTunes.
Clean yourself up, its time to rave.

our excitement this week
sees us wetting our pants over

The new Call of Duty is set
for release in early November.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
is the latest installment in the
franchise, and follows COD:
Black Ops, which pretty much
nailed all aspects of a video
game release any way you look
Rise of Nightmares is the latest
r18 Sega frst-person offering
on the xbox 360 Kinect. Its a
journey battling as Josh who,
not too unlike myself, seems
to have an alcohol problem
that is estranging him from
his wife Kate. She of course is
subsequently zombie-napped,
so Josh becomes landed with the
perilous task of her rescue from
mad scientist Viktor who has
an uncanny knack of being able
to put fesh and metal together
in a Frankenstein like montage
of new-age zombie to infict all
sorts of pain on mankind.
You get a variety of weapons
in which to slay your way
through a mansion in Eastern
Europe that to me conjures up

at it (biggest game release of all
time and biggest entertainment
release of all time).
PR wise, the publishers are
all of course delighted, over the
moon, extremely proud, etc etc.
Theyre saying that the game has
the most advanced multiplayer
ever, whatever that means.
However, one of the problems
we fnd with online playing on
platforms other than PC is the
chronic lag we seem to get. Thats
not a stab at COD or any other
game thats just our countrys
ridiculous broadband being a
complete pile of shit. But thats
off the point.
The game will be hitting
stores Tuesday 08 November
on PC, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and
NDS. Theres plenty of info
and preview clips online at
callofduty.com.
being stuck in a zombie fuelled
version of the movie Hostel. As
with any zombie game, the fun
is in the killing, and it certainly is
fun to do that.
A main feature touted with
this game is that its not on
rails. Walking is harder than you
might think. Slaying zombies
however is not, and is by far the
high point of gameplay. To walk
you place one foot out front.
Turning your shoulders turns the
character. Depending on which
weapon youre holding decides
the motion needed to slay your
foe. The chainsaw Josh gets his
hands on early in the game is
particularly fun for said slaying.
Even with the freedom of no rails,
I was more than happy to raise
my right arm frequently to kick
in the automated movement
feature between battles.
Will I be playing it this time
next year? Probably not. But Rise
of Nightmares is defnitely worth
getting your arse up off the
couch for to slay some zombies.

BlackenedWhite before the
group stirred up a cult-like
frenzy. The albums re-release
has a slimmed down run time
of 40 minutes and the strange
removal of favourite track
`Chordaroy.
Despite the hype, Hodgy sounds
like a juvenile Big Sean and
often resorts to rap clichs.
There are a few hot lines, but his
rhymes lack the unique shock
value of group leader Tyler, The

Luckily, the production
ultimately saves the project.
Left Brain proves hes a potential
star with catchy unpolished
beats, which seem perfectly
catered to Hodgys fow. Primo

it a fun listen.

Four albums in and new york trio
the rapture have fnally realised
that hey, maybe the world wont
end if they dont write a balls-
to-the-wall dance song, and so
it is on Grace... the sound of a
band desperately searching for
the middle ground and a meaning
outside of their usual beat-based
disco jams. Right from the get-go
theres a darker, more subdued
and wholly less energetic mood
without sacrifcing any vibrancy
or guts.
Thankfully what they achieve
here leans towards a soulful set
of songs driven by propulsive
rhythms, as opposed to their
previous fare of purely beat-
focussed forays with only a touch
of soul. Come Back To Me and the
title track stand as some of their
best work to date, both bouncing
along by their own momentum
rather than yielding to forced
rigidity. The Rapture are a band
who still have it, even in this day
and age.
WRITTEN BY JAMES A. ROBINS
its a shame a band this good
isnt much better known. this,
their frst full-length album,
follows last years excellent
Late Night Kebab EP. Quirky
and left-feld poet/front man
Shane Hollands unashamedly
draws thematic and stylistic
inspiration from beat writers
of the 50s and 60s. Here he
presents a collection of poems
that range from fnely nuanced
wordcraft to beat-style stream-
of-consciousness narratives.
The album covers a diverse range
of styles; jazz, funk, rock and even
metal all knitted together by the
high quality of its musical ideas
and musicianship.
Standout tracks include The
Lament Of Paris, a wistful tale
of love unrequited, the tender
Stolen Kisses, and My Poetry Is
An Alcoholic Pitbull a clever
piece of writing that features
bassist Rod Redgrave playing a
moody solo accompaniment on
upright acoustic.
What will be interesting is how
this band continues to develop
as one of the more unusual and
interesting local musical ventures.
WRITTEN BY JOHN BRINKMAN
if their name tries just a
little too hard to capture the

and the Zoo suffer no such
pretensions. Casually produced
by Bob Frisbee with the same
off-handedness he lent to
Street Chants excellent debut
Means, More Fun offers a kind of
Pavement-style ramshackleness
that is hard to resist. Wake Up
is reminiscent of The Smiths,
Everything, Everyone invokes
prime-era The Strokes, and Do
Whatever isnt unlike very early
Garageland. Band leader Graham
Panther (ex-Ruby Suns) has
accumulated an impressive array
of songs, and the sometimes
plaintive quality to his vocals
contrasts perfectly with the
upbeat guitar jangle. More Fun
is self-released and potentially
easily missed, but this album
is highly deserving of a wide
audience. If you cant fnd a copy
at your local record store then
head to bandcamp.com and
download it digitally for just ten
bucks. This is truly independent
New Zealand music at its fnest.

photonic is the brainchild of
aucklands Craig Scott. Under
this pseudonym he has created
an album of bizarre riff rock
that could very well melt your
brain. If anything, this album
is daringly hard to classify. The
songs range from spaced-out
ambience (Camera Stellata)
to downright bruisers (5htp).
Under the furious torrent of
guitar noise you can often make
out the distant sound of lyrics;
the fact they are a little buried in
the mix gives them some serious
mystique. Amidst the guitar
muck are some tasty hip-hop
beats completely repurposed for
this brand of snarling devolved
rock. Rif Mountains defnitely
lives up to its name. Coming to
the end of the album, ending
with the punishing 27-minute

the work of just one man.

founder Alan McGee himself,
alongside members of Ride,
My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus
And Mary Chain, House Of Love,
Primal Scream, Oasis and a
bunch of balding ex-NME and

all provide a telling portrayal
of the singular most important
record label of the 1990s.
Spliced between back-and-
forth interviews and archival
directed by Cary Fukunaga (Sin
nombre), Jane Eyre is based on the
classic novel by Charlotte Bronte
and set in 19th century england.
Imposing a bookending fashback
structure, the flm opens with a
distressed Jane (Mia Wasikowska)
stumbling across the moors
and collapsing with exhaustion,
whereupon shes taken in by kindly
St John Rivers (Jamie Bell) and his
two sisters (Holliday Grainger and
Tamzin Merchant).
The story then fashes back
to reveal what brought Jane to
this state, beginning with her
orphaned childhood (Amelia
Clarkson plays the young Jane)
and a heartbreaking experience
at the gloomy boarding school
shes sent to by her mean-spirited
aunt. When she turns 18 (now
played by Wasikowska), Jane takes
a job as a governess at Thornfeld
Hall where she begins to fall for
her tempestuous employer Mr
Rochester (Michael Fassbender),
only to discover that hes
harbouring a terrible secret.
Written and directed by thomas
mcCarthy (the Station agent,
the visitor), Win Win stars paul
giamatti as struggling small-town
lawyer and family man mike
Flaherty, who decides to become
the guardian of senile client leo
(Burt young) when he realises
there are substantial court
payments involved. However,
after putting Leo into a home,
Mike is unprepared for the arrival
of Leos 16-year-old grandson Kyle
(Alex Shaffer), who shows up on
Leos doorstep when his drug-
addicted mother Cindy (Melanie
Lynskey) goes into rehab. Kyle then
ends up getting taken in by Mike,
much to the consternation of his
wife, Jackie (Amy Ryan).
As luck would have it, Kyle
turns out to be a gifted wrestler
and Mike sees a way to reverse
the fortunes of the high school
wrestling team that he co-coaches
in his spare time with his friends
Terry (Bobby Cannavale) and
Stephen (Jeffrey Tambor). However,

each of them insistent in their

the discovery of acid-house, to
the championing of shoegaze

Britpop, Creation still remains
one of the most infuential

Wasikowska is wonderful as

emotionally engaging
performance that lets us
keenly feel her inner life and
the frustrating constraints of
her social position. She also
has palpable chemistry with

superb form as the tortured
Rochester; as a result, their
relationship is both believable
and achingly romantic.
In addition, theres strong
support from a superb cast
that includes Jamie Bell, Sally

Judi Dench, who underplays to
strong effect as Mrs Fairfax, the
housekeeper at Thornfeld Hall.
On top of that, Moira Buffnis
excellent script crackles with
great dialogue and ensures that
the story is utterly gripping even
if you already know the plot.
The flm is also stunningly shot,
courtesy of cinematographer
Adriano Goldman, who gets

from anything else, this is the

for her son, especially as Mike
hasnt told Jackie or Kyle about
the court payments.
Giamatti is typically superb
as Mike, easily managing to
keep his world-weary character
sympathetic, despite his initial
act of recession-prompted
dishonesty. Hes comfortably
matched by a terrifc
performance from newcomer
Alex Shaffer, whose portrayal
of Kyle is both consistently
surprising and quietly moving.
In addition, theres superb
comic support from Tambor
and Cannavale, while the
always-excellent Amy Ryan is
on predictably brilliant form
as Jackie; Melanie Lynskey also
works wonders with the flms
least sympathetic and most
stereotypical part.
The sharply written script
crackles with great dialogue
and there are several very
funny scenes, particularly the
various interactions between
Giamatti, Cannavale and
Tambor (they make a hugely
likeable comic trio). However,
what really shines through,
as with his previous flms, is
McCarthys genuine affection
for his characters, faws and all,
while the lurking presence of
the recession adds a believably
topical edge.

Alright! The worst video this
week also goes to the worst song
on this page! Smoke effects are
lame dude, and so are you. Stop
feigning emotion and singing to
the camera while refecting on
your past. Shes gone, because
you are a fool. This piece of shit
is so bad, its laughable. Wait,
maybe its a spoof?
