Curbing violent crime is an all-hands-on-deck
task. That must include corporate Chicago.
Chicago’s corporate commu-
nity sparked a spate of depress-
ing headlines last year. Billionaire
Ken Griffin took the headquarters
of his Citadel investment firm
to Miami. Boeing relocated its
corporate headquarters to Arling-
ton, Virginia, while Tyson Foods
shut down its Chicago office. And
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kemp-
czinski ruffled City Hall feathers
during remarks at the Economic
Club of Chicago when he warned,
“there is a general sense out there
that our city is in crisis.”
Now, however, corporate
Chicago may be giving Chicago-
ans a reason for optimism. .
The Civic Committee of the
Commercial Club of Chicago is a
long-standing group of business
leaders tasked with brainstorm-
ing ways to improve the region’s
economic and social well-be-
ing. Last week, the prominent
committee announced its newest
endeavor, and arguably its most
challenging — to make a serious
dent in Chicago’s gun violence.
The benchmarks for success
that the committee has set are
lofty, to say the least. In five years,
the group wants to bring down
the yearly number of Chicago
homicides to 400 from a recent
peak of 804 in 2021. In 10 years, it
wants that number brought down
to below 200. The committee also

WAR IN UKRAINE
KHERSON, Ukraine —
A major dam in southern
Ukraine collapsed Tuesday,
flooding villages, endanger-
ing crops and threatening
drinking water supplies as
both sides in the war scram-

and blamed each other for
the destruction.
Ukraine accused Russian
forces of blowing up the
Kakhovka dam and hydro-

has controlled for more

blamed Ukrainian bombard-
ment in the contested area,
where the river separates
the two sides.

FUTURE CARE?
Nearly 70% of seniors will likely need long-term care. But 9-out-of-10 lack
long-term care insurance. And 80% have not adequately planned for retirement.
Here’s a solution. Move to Friendship Village, and you’ll enjoy “long-term
care assurance.” We call it Life Care, and it provides lifetime access to any
care you may need. It’s all onsite, so you’ll never have to move away –
even if your funds run low. Now, does that sound like a plan?

1. Caramelize the shallots (at home).
In a small skillet over low heat, melt the
butter. Add the shallots and salt, and let
them caramelize slowly and gently, stirring
occasionally, until they’re tender, sweet-
tasting and an appealing hazelnut brown,
15 to 25 minutes. Let the shallots cool, then
wrap tightly in a small piece of parchment
paper or wax paper.
2. Prep the cheese (at home). Meanwhile,
over a small bowl, grate the Gruyère on
the coarse side of a box grater. Add the
cornstarch and nutmeg, and toss to combine
thoroughly. Pack the cheese mixture into
a resealable bag or airtight container, stick
the packet of caramelized shallots inside the
bag (on top of the cheese), seal the bag and
refrigerate or freeze. (The cheese mix and
shallots will keep for 1 month, frozen.)
3. Melt, burble and serve (at camp). In a
small saucepan over medium heat, bring the
wine to a simmer. Add the cheese mixture
and shallots. Decrease the heat to low and
stir to melt the cheese. Once the cheese has
melted and the fondue is bubbling gently,
