John and Sally are late ... Vanessa checks her phone. She gets a text*. What does
it say?

* “text” = a message you write to someone with your phone.

Instructions: Read the text aloud.

Vanessa: Hmmm ... John and Sally are late.


Peter: Maybe they would like to watch a blockbuster.
Vanessa: Ha ha. Maybe Sally feels like watching a romantic comedy?
Peter: That's depressing. Hey, is it your phone?
Vanessa: Yes. It's from John.
Peter: What does it say?
Vanessa: “Hi guys! Thanks for the offer, but I would prefer to stay in tonight. I have
soccer practice tomorrow. I try to go every other day. Sorry about that!

watch a spy thriller. Maybe next time!”
Vanessa: Great ... Well, let's order pizza.

Making Plans for the Evening

You use modals or the simple present tense to make offers and invitations, such as "Would
you like to … ?" or "Do you feel like … ?"
You can also use modals and the simple present tense to accept or decline invitations.

Making Offers Accepting Declining

In polite conversations, it is important to thank people when you accept their invitation.
