Introduction
Introduction
Note
Unless stated otherwise, all installation work stated in this document is to be done by
yard/customer personnel. It is the responsibility of the yard/customer to make sure that
their installation personnel are sufficiently qualified, and that proper caution is taken to
prevent injury or damage to life, health, equipment and property.

Installation
Location
Always check the installation to ensure that the WindObserver II is not affected by
other equipment operating locally, which may not conform to current standards, e.g.
radio/radar transmitters, engines, generators etc.
• Avoid mounting in the plane of any radar scanner – a vertical separation of at least 2
m should be achieved.
• Following minimum separation distances (in all directions) is suggested for radio
transmitting antennas:
– VHF IMM – 1 m
– MF/HF – 5 m
– Satcom – 5 m (avoid likely lines of sight)
Installation immediately above the vessel’s deck is unfavorable, especially if the deck has
sides that deflect the wind. In this situation turbulence of the wind speed and direction
may occur which has no coherence with the undisturbed wind speed and direction.
Orientation
The WindObserver II is mounted vertically with the cable exit at the bottom.

Installation
Handling
Take care when unpacking and handling the equipment. Make a visual inspection
to determine that the equipment has not been damaged during shipment and that all
components are present according to the packing list. Can be lifted by hand.
Caution
The equipment contains delicate electronic components - handle accordingly.
Mechanical installation
Wind Sensor
The following procedure describes the installation of the WindObserver II using the
optional mounting bracket (KM item number 704294).
Prerequisites
Determine a suitable location for the wind sensor. Make sure that the location is
a sufficient distance from all objects that could affect the accuracy of the wind
measurements.
Procedure
1 To install the wind sensor to a bracket assembly, refer to the following figure and
the following steps:
a Install a base gasket (1) to the base of the wind sensor (2).
b Put the wind sensor in position on a mounting bracket (3).
c Install four M5 screws (4) to secure the wind sensor on the mounting bracket.
2 Put the wind sensor with the mounting bracket in position on the tube assembly
(yard supply).
3 Turn the wind sensor with mounting bracket around the tube assembly until the
north pointing line (5) aligns within ±2º, parallel to the alongships centre line of the
vessel, facing the bow.
4 Tighten the four nuts of the mounting bracket to secure the assembly in position
on the tube assembly.

Junction box
Procedure
1 Determine a suitable location for the junction box taking note of the length of cable
supplied with the wind sensor (2m or 20m).
2 Drill four holes on the structure. Refer to following illustration.
3 Deburr the edges of the four holes to remove all sharp edges.
4 Install the four M6 screws to secure the junction box in position.

Electrical installation
Context
For electrical installation of the WindObserver II refer to the Cable List and Cable
Details documents for the actual project. These documents can be found in the Cable
Information manual.
Procedure
1 Remove the four screws to remove the cover on the junction box.
2 Terminate the wires in the junction box. Refer to the following table and illustration.
