(STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY)

1. Choose a QUANTITATIVE variable from the given data set. Construct a

quantitative grouped FDT for this variable. Show preliminary computations (R, k,
and c). Also, construct a histogram for the data. Use appropriate labels and titles
for the table and graph. Describe the characteristics of the units in the data set
using a brief narrative report. Refer to the FDT and histogram constructed.
R = 73.1 - 10. 1= 63 k = Square root of 30 = 5.477 or 5 c = 63/5 = 12.6

The Gross Monthly Household Income(in thousand pesos) of 30 Members of the Batong Malake
Senior Citizens Association.More than half of them have an gross monthly income of 10.1 to
35.2, Only one of them have a gross monthly income of 73.05

Which of the three methods of data presentation do you think is most appropriate to use for the
variable chosen in Number 1? Justify your answer.

Answer: Graphical Presentation is the most appropriate for the variable that I have been
chosen because the gross income of Batong Malake Senior Citizens is easily visible

2. Choose a QUALITATIVE variable from Table 5.2 Construct an appropriate graph. Use
labels and a title for the graph.

Give a brief report describing the variable:

56.67% of the 30 Batong Malake Senior Citizens Association participants in lakbay aral are women,
compared to 43.33% of men; this group's members make up the majority of the group.

ANSWER SHEET – WEEK 3
(STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY)

1. What is the highest monthly family income? Lowest?

Answer: The highest family monthly income is 60,000 pesos and the lowest monthly family income is
12,000 pesos.

2. What monthly family income is most frequent in the village?

Answer: The most frequent family income in the village is 32,250 pesos

3. If you list down individually the values of the monthly family income from lowest to highest, what is
the monthly family income where half of the total number of families have monthly family income less
than or equal to that value while the other half have monthly family income greater than that value?

Answer: The monthly family income where half of the total number of families have monthly family
income less than or equal to that value while the other half have monthly family income greater than
that value is 32,250 pesos.

4. What is the average monthly family income?

Answer: The average monthly family income is 30,007.14 pesos

Learning Task 3: Answer the following questions.

1. Thirty people were asked the question, “How many people do you consider your best
friend?” The graph below shows their responses.

12

10
Frequency

What measure of central tendency would you use to find the center for the number of
best friends people have? Explain your answer.

Answer: The measure of central tendency i would used to find the center for the number of best friends
people have is Median because median is less sensitive to outliers and skewed distribution, and it
provides a better estimate of the center for such datasets.

2. The mean age of 10 full time guidance counselors is 35 years old. Two new full time guidance
counselors, aged 28 and 30, are hired. Five years from now, what would be the average age of
these twelve guidance counselors?

Answer: Five years from now the average age of these twelve guidance counselors is 39 years
old because after hiring two new guidance counselors aged 28 to 30 the total numbers of
counselors become 12 and the sum of there aged would be 350 yrs old + 28yrs old + 30 yrs old
would be 408 yrs old then we will divide it by 12 so 408 divided by 12 is equal to 34 then we will
add 5 to 34 the answer would be 39.

3. Houses in a certain area in a big city have a mean price of PhP4,000,000 but a median price is
only PhP2,500,000. How might you explain this best?

Answer: There maybe some outliers in the data.

4. Five persons were asked on the usual number of hours they spent watching television in a
week. Their responses are: 5, 7, 3, 38, and 7 hours.
a. Obtain the mean, median and mode.
Mean = (5 + 7 + 3 + 38 + 7) / 5 = 12

Median = 3, 5, 7, 7, 38 the median is the middle value, which is 7.

Mode = is 7

b. If another person were to be asked the same question and he/she responded 200
hours, how would this affect the mean, median and mode?

Answer:If another person were to respond with 200 hours, this would significantly affect the mean but
not the median or mode. The new mean would be calculated by adding the new value to the sum of the
original values and dividing by the new total number of values: New Mean = (5 + 7 + 3 + 38 + 7 + 200) /
6 = 50.The median and mode would remain the same because they are not affected by extreme values.
The median is still 7 and the mode is still 7.

2. For the senior high school dance, there is a debate going on among students regarding
the color that will be featured prominently. Votes were sent by students via SMS, and
the results are as follows:

Color Red Green Orange White Yellow Blue Brown Purple

No. of Votes
Received 300 550 70 130 220 710 35 5

a. Is there a clear winner on the choice of color?

Answer: Yes

b. Compute for the mean, median and modal color (if possible).
Answer: The modal color is blue and computing for mean and meadian is not possible
c. Why is it that we could or could not find each measure of the central tendency?

Answer: We could not find the measure of mean and median because the given is an example
of qualitative data.

d. Which measure of central tendency will determine the color to be prominently

used during the senior high school dance?
Answer: Mode is the measure of central tendency that will determine the color to be prominently used
during senior high school dance.

3. Everyone studied very hard for the quiz in the Statistics and Probability
Course. There were 10 questions in the quiz, and the scores are distributed
as follows:

Score Number of Students

10 8
9 12
8 6
7 5
6 3
5 2
4 0
3 1
2 1
1 0
0 2

a. Compute for the mean, median, and mode for this set of data.

Score(I) Number of Students Xi Fi

(Fi)
10 8 10 x 8 = 80
9 12 9 x 12 = 108
8 6 8 x 6 = 48
7 5 7 x 5 = 25
6 3 6 x 3 = 18
5 2 5 x 2 = 10
4 0 4x0=0
3 1 3x1=3
2 1 2x 1 = 2
1 0 1x0=0
0 2 0x2=0
Sum = 40 sum = 304

Mean:
304/40 = 7.6
Median:
(40th/2)= 20th and (80/2 + 1)th =21th
20th + 21th/2 = 8 + 9/2 = 17/2 = 8.5

Learning Task 4: Answer the following questions.

1. A businesswoman is planning to have a restaurant in the university belt. She wants to study
the weekly food allowance of the students in order to plan her pricing strategy for the
different menus she is going to offer. She asked 213 students and gathered the following
data:

Weekly Food Weekly Food

Frequency Frequency
Allowance Allowance
50 5 550 3
100 3 600 18
150 6 700 22
170 1 750 8
200 8 800 16
250 5 900 11
300 5 1000 27
350 5 1200 2
400 6 1500 3
450 11 1700 1
500 46 2000 1

a. Determine the weekly food allowance where 60% of the students have at most.

Answer: 60% of the students is equivalent to 0.60 x 213 = 127.8 this means that we need to find the weekly
food allowance for the 128th student.By looking through the cumulative frequency, we can see that the
128th student falls under the category of "500" weekly food allowance therefore, the weekly food
allowance where 60% of the students have at most is 500 pesos.

b. What percentage of the students have a weekly food allowance that is at most 170 pesos?

Answer: The percentage of the students with a weekly food allowance at most 170 pesos is 15 because the
percentage of students with weekly food allowance at most 170 pesos is 15/213 x 100% = 7.04%.
c. If the business woman wanted to have at least 50% of the students could afford to eat in her
restaurant, what should be the minimum total cost of the meals that the student could have in a
week?

Answer: First we need to find the median weekly food allowance to find the median, we need to
add up the frequencies until we reach the middle of the data set, which is (213+1)/2 = 107th
student, the 107th student falls under the category of "500" weekly food allowance. Therefore, the
median weekly food allowance is 500 pesos.
