GEOMETRICAL PROPERTIES OF CIRCLE

A. Perpendicular bisector of a chord

Theorem: The perpendicular bisector of any chord of a circle will pass through
the center of the circle.

B. Equal Chords

Theorem: Equal chords of a circle (or of congruent circles) are equidistant from
the centre (or centres).

C. Tangent perpendicular to radius

A tangent to a circle is a line intersecting the circle at exactly one point, the point of tangency or
tangency point. An important result is that the radius from the center of the circle to the point of
tangency is perpendicular to the tangent line.
D. Tangent from external point

Tangent from external point theorem says that:

• The lengths of these two tangents will be equal, that is, PA = PB.
• They will subtend equal angles at the center, that is, ∠POA=∠POB.
• The angle between them will be bisected by the line joining the exterior point and the center, that
is, ∠APO=∠BPO.

Angle Properties of Circles

A. Angles substended at center and at circumference

The angle at the centre is twice the angle at the circumference.

B. Angles in a semicircle

The angle at the circumference in a semicircle is 90°. Angles in a triangle add up to 180°.
C. Angles in same segment or in opposite segments

Angles in the same segment are equal

Angles in Opposite Segments The sum of angles in opposite segments of a circle is 180 degrees. (
angles in opp. segments)
