1. LITERATURE REVIEW: (250 Words)


What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.
 You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.
 You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a
common theme or issue. 
 You don't need to critique your sources
 You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)
 You need to provide background information such as history and
definitions

Literature Review: Traditionally, learning has taken place within the


confines of a classroom or some type of lecture hall equivalent. Within the
walls of the classroom, teachers interact with students face-to-face to not
only teach, but to foster meaningful relationships with them. Recent years,
however, have shown an increase in online modes of teaching. These
include online homeschool options, distance education, and even some
online degree programs. Recent data has shown online class growth to
have increased from 19.8% to 24.8% within one years’ time (Smith, 2005).

Distance education can be defined as an instructional delivery that takes


place when teachers and learners are separated throughout the learning
process by both time and physical distance. (Motamedi, 2001). Research
has shown the advantages of distance learning to include ease of access,
the convenience of being able to work and study, and overall effectiveness.
While it is indeed true that distance learning has its many advantages to
the realms of education, there are also quite a few disadvantages that still
need to be sorted out before it can be looked at as a complete success.
These include but are not limited to lack of live interaction, technical
issues,

Research shows that distance education can be as effective as traditional


face-to-face methods of learning. In a study conducted by an Eastern Iowa
Community College District, researchers found no significant difference in
the academic performance between students who attended classes in-
person and those who attended off-campus.
Access-Distance education has also become increasingly popular since it
provides educational access to those who have not been able to attend
school regularly due to various reasons. In a
