Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness
and safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as
a matter of course, be observed.

⇒ m1.1 easures when working on vehicles with a start/stop
system”, page 1
⇒ p1.2 recautions when using testers and measuring instru‐
ments during a road test”, page 1

1.1 Safety measures when working on vehicles with a start/stop system

Risk of injury from unexpected engine start
If the vehicle's start/stop system is activated, the engine can
start unexpectedly. A message in the dash panel insert indi‐
cates whether the start/stop system is activated.
– Deactivate start/stop system by switching off the ignition.

1.2 Safety precautions when using testers and measuring instruments during
a road test
Risk of injury caused by unsecured testing and measuring in‐
struments
When the front passenger airbag is triggered in an accident, in‐
sufficiently secured testing and measuring instruments become
dangerous projectiles.
– Secure testing and measuring instruments on the rear seat.
Or
– Have a second person operate the test and measuring
equipment on the rear seat.

2.1 Rules for cleanliness

Even slight soiling can cause faults. Observe the following rules
for cleanliness:
♦ Thoroughly clean all connections/inspection holes and cor‐
responding surrounding areas before disconnecting/opening
them.
♦ Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them
over. Use only lint-free cloths.
♦ If repair work cannot be performed immediately, carefully
cover or seal components.
♦ Install only clean replacement parts. Do not remove new
parts from packaging until immediately before installing. Do
not use replacement parts that have been stored without
packaging (e.g. loose in toolboxes).
♦ If system is open, do not work with compressed air.
♦ Protect disconnected electrical connectors from dirt and wa‐
ter, and reconnect them only when dry.

2.2 General information

♦ For the relevant current flow diagrams, see ⇒ Current flow
diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.

2.3 Contact corrosion

Contact corrosion can occur if unsuitable fasteners (bolts, nuts,
washers, etc.) are used.
For this reason, only connecting elements with a special surface
coating have been fitted.
In addition, rubber, plastic and adhesives are made of non-con‐
ductive materials.
If there is any doubt about the suitability of replacement parts, a
general rule is to use new replacement parts ⇒ Electronic parts
catalogue (ETKA).
Please note:
♦ Use only genuine parts which are tested and compatible with
aluminium.
♦ The use of genuine parts is always recommended.
♦ Damage resulting from contact corrosion is not covered by
the warranty.

2.4 Routing and attachment of lines

♦ In order to rule out mix-ups and ensure that lines/wires/ca‐
bles/hoses/pipe are all installed in their original position, the
lines for the fuel, hydraulic and vacuum systems and for the
activated carbon filter as well as electrical wires/cables must
be marked appropriately before they are removed. Where
necessary, make sketches or take photographs.

♦ To avoid damage to lines, ensure adequate clearance from

all moving or hot components on account of the confined
space.
