Installation Manual For The Bonanza A-36 Ice Protection System
Installation Manual For The Bonanza A-36 Ice Protection System
Manual 10353-01
Revision 3
30 May 03
This manual provides a pictorial, chronological guide to the installation of TKS system. Component
installation is illustrated as the installer sees it, with engineering drawings used strictly as reference
support where needed. The installation instructions are organized in the exact sequence of the
installation. One only needs to start at the beginning of this manual, complete the steps of each page,
then proceed to the next page. After the last page is completed, the installation will be finished.
Each installation drawing is immediately preceded by a parts list. Each component is identified with an
Item Number, Part Number, and Description. The Item Number is the cross reference utilized
throughout this manual. When a component is identified in a drawing with a numbered tag , that
number is the Item Number for that particular component. Each component within the packaged kit can
be identified by the Part Number, marked appropriately on its individual packaging. The last section of
this manual presents a comprehensive parts list for the system, identifying Item Number, Part Number,
Description, Supply Code, and the Quantity per Variant.
Before proceeding with the installation, it is best to inventory the system with the parts list. Using the
column for the variant purchased, identify and verify the parts count. Only parts labeled within the parts
list with Supply Code A and H are supplied with the kit. Items labeled with a supply code of C and D
are the supply responsibility of the installer.
The first three drawings are provided as a general reference to the system. They illustrate the general
layout of the system, both pictorially and schematically. The drawings are useful references throughout
the course of the installation.
With the forth drawing, the actual installation process commences. On pages requiring specific, ordered
steps, the sequence is identified with numbered signs, , , . Follow that sequence for that page.
On pages with out signs, follow the instructions in the most convenient order. Finish all items on a page
before proceeding to the next page.
When the steps to this manual are completed, your Bonanza will have a new level of utility for operation
in today's flight environment. This manual provides the means to install that capability. It also provides
a useful reference to the system after installation. Keep the manual with your aircraft records and do not
discard it. Use your aircraft now with the peace of mind that TKS Ice Protection will be with you.

General
a) Effectivity
Beech/Raytheon Aircraft Model 36 aircraft to be fitted with TKS Ice Protection Kits in accordance
with STC SA01136WI. Serial Number range: As specified on the Supplementary Type Certificate.
b) Description
This modification introduces a method to exude ethylene glycol solution ("de-icing fluid") from
porous leading edges to provide a thin film of glycol to minimize the adherence of ice. The system
provides porous panels to be fitted to the leading edges of wings, horizontal stabilizer and vertical
stabilizer. The system also provides propeller protection via a slinger ring. Windshield cleaning
capability is provided by a spraybar.
The de-icing fluid is fed from a fiberglass tank located on the rear spar carry thru structure. The fluid
is pumped through plastic lines to proportioning units located in each wing and in the fuselage and
to a nozzle with a flow control device mounted in front of the engine. The windshield is cleaned via
a separate pump.

Approved Fluids
De-icing fluids must meet one of the following specifications:
1) TKS 80
2) AL5 (DTD406B)
3) TKS R328
Fluids conforming to these specifications may be mixed in the aircraft tank in any proportions.
Automobile anti-freeze fluids must not be used since they may contain additives which may be
harmful to the membranes in the porous panels or to other system components. Under no
circumstances should any form of thickened de-ice fluid for runway or parked aircraft de-icing be
used.
Panel Cleaning
The porous panels may be washed with soap or detergent, and water using a brush or lint free cloth.
Only the following solvents are permitted for use on porous panels (Refer also to the aircraft
manufacturer's recommendations and instructions for cleaning the aircraft exterior surfaces.)
Water (with soaps or detergents) Approved de-icing fluids Aviation gasoline
Aviation turbine fuel Iso-propyl alcohol Ethyl alcohol
Industrial methylated spirit

Approved Fluids
The following fluids are approved for use in the Bonanza - TKS Ice Protection System:
TKS 80
DTD 406B (AL-5, AVL-TKS)
TKS R328
Caution
Automobile anti-freeze fluids must not be used since they may contain additives which may be
harmful to the membranes in the porous panels or to other system components. Under no
circumstances should any form of thickened de-ice fluid for runway or parked aircraft de-icing be
used.
Pour at least two gallons of ice protection fluid into the tank. Turn on power to the system, then bleed
air from the main pump body by operating the windshield pump (see drawing below for windshield
pump activation). NOTE: Run the pump for no longer than 5 seconds at a time, then wait 10 seconds
before running again. This process may be repeated five times. When a steady flow is obtained from
the windshield spraybar, the main pump body will be primed. NOTE: If the flow is not achieved at the
spraybar, do not run the windshield pump again until investigating the cause.

Start the system in MAXIMUM mode . It may take more than fifteen minutes for initial flow to begin
from one or more panels. With the panels operating, perform the following checks:
1) Make a final inspection for internal leaks and correct any if present.
2) Operate windshield system and ensure proper operation and absence of leaks. Repeat for second
pump.
3) Confirm proper annunciation on control panel (see figure on previous page) as detailed below, and
correct any discrepancy. Repeat for second pump.
Select MAXIMUM. The MAXIMUM Light Emitting Diode (LED) should flash alternate
red/green and the NORMAL LED should flash red/off as the system pressure rises (initially this
may take a few minutes, but after fully bleeding the system, the period will be in the order of 10
seconds). When adequate system pressure is developed the NORMAL LED should extinguish and
the MAXIMUM LED should show steady green.
Switch off for sufficient time for the system pressure to fall (approximately 2 minutes), then select
NORMAL. The NORMAL LED should flash alternate red/green and the MAXIMUM LED
should flash red/off as the system pressure rises (approximately 20 seconds, but possibly longer if
the temperature is high). When adequate system pressure is developed, the MAXIMUM LED
should extinguish and the NORMAL LED should show steady green.
With the Airframe/Propeller Pump Switch in the OFF position, both LED's should be off.
The HIGH PRESSURE INDICATOR LAMP is a latching device and will illuminate amber if the
Filter Element requires renewal. It should not illuminate during testing, but may on occasion be
tripped during engine start and/or aircraft electrical system spikes. If this occurs, it may be
canceled by depressing the RESET switch (using a ballpen tip or similar instrument).
Test the HIGH PRESSURE LED by depressing the RESET switch. The yellow LED should
illuminate while the switch is depressed, then go off as the switch is released.
Check Panel dimming by shielding or during night operation. The intensity of all displays, except
the red and yellow warnings, should be reduced at low ambient light levels. The minimum
intensity is adjustable by means of a potentiometer accessed through the unmarked hole in the
Control Panel facia. Use a small screwdriver to make the adjustment. Clockwise rotation will
increase intensity.
Caution
After the system has been operated, fluid under pressure may remain in the main pipe-line system
and the supply line to each panel. If required, release the trapped pressure by slowly loosening the
connection at the required fitting. Ensure proper eye protection is worn by all personnel.
Fluid will continue to weep from the panels after system operation as the pressure bleeds down and
panel reservoirs empty. Time varies dependant on temperature which affects fluid viscosity.
4) Operate Wing Ice Inspection Light, ensure proper operation and alignment, (i.e. beam centered at
mid span.) Correct if necessary.

Aerospace Systems & Technologies Inc. 30 May 03 51
5) Include the Airplane Flight Manual Supplement with airplane documents.
6) Compute new weight and balance information. Make appropriate Airframe Log Book entries and
file Repair and Alteration Form (FAA 337).
7) Make landing gear retraction tests to check clearance of installed equipment in gear bays.
