Disassemble Bevel And Transfer Gears (Power Shift)

Start By:

a. separation of transmission and bevel gears

1. Remove bracket assemblies (1) and (3) from the bevel gear case.

2. Remove yoke (2).

3. Remove four bolts (4). Install two 3/8 " - 16 NC forcing screws in carrier (5). Tighten the
forcing screws evenly, and remove the carrier.

4. Remove O-ring seal (6) from carrier (5).

5. Remove bolts (7). Install two 1/2 " - 13 NC forcing screws in cage (8). Tighten the forcing
screws evenly and remove cage (8) and shims (9).

6. Remove seal (10) and O-ring seal (11) from cage (8).

7. If necessary, remove bearing cup (12) and bearing (13) from cage (8).

8. Remove bolts (14), cover (16) and shims (15).

9. Remove bolts (17). Install two 1/2 " - 13 NC forcing screws in cover (18). Tighten the forcing
screws evenly, and remove the cover.

10. Remove the bolt and retainer (19) from the gear.

11. If necessary, remove dowels (20) and bearing cup (21) from cover (18).

12. Remove gears (22) and (23) from the case assembly.

13. Use a press and tool (A) to remove bearing cone (24) from pinion (25).

14. Use a press, and remove bearing cone (26) and pinion (25) from gears (23).

NOTICE

Bearing cones (27) and (28) must be destroyed to remove them from
the gear.

15. If necessary, remove bearing cones (27) and (28) from gear (22).

16. If necessary, remove bearing cups (29) and (30) from the case assembly.

17. Bend the tab on washer (31) away from nut (32). Use tool (B), and remove the nut from the
bevel gear shaft. Remove washer (31) and the washer from the shaft.

18. Pull shaft (33) out of the case assembly far enough to fasten a hoist to it. Fasten a hoist to shaft
(33), and remove it from the case assembly. The weight of the shaft is 39 Kg (86 lb).

19. Remove bolts (34) that hold gear (35) to shaft (33). Remove the gear from the shaft.

20. If necessary remove bearing (36) from shaft (33).

21. Remove bolts (37) and retainer (38).

22. Install two 1/2 " - 13 NC forcing screws in cage (39). Tighten the forcing screws evenly and
remove cage (39) and shims (40) from the case assembly.

23. Remove two bearing cups (41) and bearing cones (42) from cage (39).

24. If necessary remove bearing race (43) from the case assembly.

1. If bearing race (43) was removed, lower the temperature of the bearing race and install it in the
case assembly.

2. Install bearing cones (42) and bearing cups (41) in cage (39).

3. Install the original amount of shims (40) and cage (39) in the case assembly.

4. Put retainer (38) in position and install bolts (37).

5. If bearing (36) was removed, heat the bearing to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F)
and install the bearing on shaft (33).

6. Put gear (35) in position on shaft (33) and install bolts (34).

7. Fasten a hoist to shaft (33). Put the shaft in position in the case assembly. Remove the hoist
from the shaft, and install it the rest of the way.

8. Put the washer and washer (31) in position on the shaft.

9. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads and face of nut (32). Install the nut on the
shaft. Use tool (B) and tighten the nut to a torque of 612 ± 68 N·m (450 ± 50 lb ft).

10. If bearing cups (29) and (30) were removed, lower the temperature of the bearing cups, and
install them in the case assembly. Make sure the bearing cups are seated in the case assembly.

NOTE: If the bearing cones were removed from gear (22), new bearing cones must be installed.

11. Heat bearing cones (27) and (28) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the
bearing cones on gear (22). Make sure the bearing cones are seated on the gear.

12. Put pinion (25) in position in gear (23).

13. Heat bearing cone (26) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install the bearing
cone on pinion (25). Make sure the bearing cone is seated on the pinion.

14. Heat bearing cone (24) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), and install the bearing
cone on pinion (25). Make sure the bearing cone is seated on the pinion.

15. Install gear (22) and gear (23) in the case assembly.

16. If dowels (20) were removed, install the dowel in cover (18).

17. If bearing cup (21) was removed, install the bearing cup until dimension (X) is 4.37 mm (.172
in).

18. Put cover (18) in position, and install bolts (17).

19. Put shims (15) with a total thickness of 4.37 mm (.172 in) and cover (16) in position on the
cover, and install the bolts that hold them in place.

20. Install tooling (C) as shown.

21. Install tooling (D) with the point of the dial indicator against the inside race of the bearing
cone.

22. Use tool (C) to push and hold the gear and pinion down. Use a ratchet wrench, and rotate the
gear and pinion a minimum of three revolutions. Watch the dial indicator as the needle moves.
Stop rotating the gear and pinion at the point of maximum needle movement.

23. Zero the dial indicator. Put a mark on the bearing race at the location of maximum needle
movement.

24. Pull the gear and pinion upward with tool (C). Rotate the gear and pinion a minimum of three
revolutions. Stop the gear and pinion at the same point of maximum needle movement. Record the
measurement on the dial indicator. This reading is the actual bearing clearance.

25. Repeat Steps 22 through 24. The reading should be the same if done correctly.

26. Remove cover (16). Remove enough shims to obtain a bearing clearance (end play) of 0.05 to
0.15 mm) .002 to .006 in).

27. If bearing (13) was removed, install the bearing in cage (8) with tool (E).

28. If bearing cup (12) was removed, lower the temperature of the bearing cup, and install it in
cage (8).

29. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket on the seal bore in cage (8), and let it dry. Do not put liquid
gasket on the case of seal (10).

30. Install lip-type seal (10) with the lip of the seal toward the bearing as shown.

31. Install O-ring seal (11) on cage (8).

32. Put retainer (19) in position, and install the bolt that holds it in place.

33. Put cage (8) in position without the shims. Install two bolts (7) 180° apart.

34. Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 2.3 N·m (20 lb in).

35. Rotate the gear a minimum of five revolutions. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 4.5 N·m (40 lb
in).

36. Rotate the gear again a minimum of five revolutions. Retighten the bolts to a torque of 4.5
N·m (40 lb in).

37. Use a feeler gauge, and measure the gap between cage (8) and the cover at the location of bolts
(7). Average the two measurements.

38. Remove bolts (7) and cage (8) from the cover.

39. Install shims (9) equal to the measurement in step 37 plus 0.18 mm (.007 in).

40. Put cage (8) in position on the shims, and install bolts (7). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 135
± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft).

41. Use tooling (D) and (F) to check the end play of the gear as follows:

a. Push the gear down, and hold it with tooling (F). Rotate the gear with a ratchet wrench a
minimum of five revolutions. Watch the dial indicator move. Stop rotating the gear at the point of
maximum needle movement.

b. Zero the dial indicator. Put a mark at the location of maximum needle movement.

c. Pull the gear upward with tool (F). Rotate the gear a minimum of five revolutions. Stop the gear
at the same point of maximum needle movement. Record the measurement. This measurement is
the actual end play of the gear.

44. Repeat Steps 41a through 41c. The measurement should be the same if done correctly. The
end play of the gear must be 0.05 to 0.15 mm (.002 to .006 in).

45. Fabricate plate (44) out of a 1/41/2 6.35 mm x 38.10 mm x 127.00 mm (" x 1 " x 5") piece of
mild steel.

46. Install plate (44) as shown to hold the gear and pinion when the backlash is being checked.

47. Put tooling (D) in position with the point of the dial indicator against gear (35).

48. Use tooling (D) to measure the backlash of gear (35) at three locations spaced evenly apart.
The difference in the three measurements should not be more than 0.08 mm (.003 in).

49. Add or subtract shims (40) to obtain a backlash of 0.10 to 0.30 mm (.004 to .012 in). Remove
plate (44) after the backlash has been adjusted.

50. Install O-ring seal (6) on carrier (5).

51. Put carrier (5) in position, and install bolts (4).

52. Install yoke (2).

53. Install bracket assemblies (1) and (3).

End By:

a. connection of transmission and bevel gears

a. separation of transmission and bevel gears

b. remove transmission hydraulic control valves

1. Put the transmission in position on tooling (A).

2. Use tool (B) and remove snap ring (2) from housing (1).

3. Remove six bolts (4) and housing (3).

4. Use tool (C) and remove snap ring (5) from housing (3). Remove bearing (6) from the housing.

5. Remove four springs (7), two discs (8) and two plates (9).

6. Remove piston (10) from the housing assembly. Remove the rings from piston (10).

7. Install two 5/16 " - 18 NC forged eyebolts (11) in housing (1). Fasten a hoist to the housing.

8. Use tool (D) and compress ring (12).

9. Remove housing (1) from gear (13).

10. Remove ring (12) from housing (1).

11. Remove rings (14) and (15) from the carrier.

12. Use a press and tooling (E) and compress springs (19) inside the housing.

13. Remove spiral lock ring (16) from coupling (17) and slowly release the spring tension with the
press.

14. Remove coupling (17), plate (20), two springs (19) and piston (18) from housing (1).

15. Remove rings (21) and (22) from piston (18).

NOTICE

Carrier (24) must be destroyed to remove it from housing (1).

16. If necessary, break carrier (24), and remove it from housing (1).

17. Remove dowels (23) and (25).

18. Remove four discs (27) and three plates (26) from gear (13).

19. Remove snap ring (29) with tool (F).

20. Remove gear (28) from the shaft.

The No. 3 clutch piston (33) could stay with housing assembly (32)
when it is removed. Use caution not to drop the No. 3 clutch piston.

23. Remove housing assembly (32).

24. Remove piston (33). Remove the rings from the piston.

26. Remove springs (35).

27. Remove three discs (36) and the remaining two plates (34).

28. Remove carrier (37) and gear (38) as an assembly.

29. Use eight 3.175 mm (.125 in) diameter roll pins (39) to compress ring (40). Separate carrier
(37) and gear (38).

30. Remove ring (40) and ring (41) from carrier (37).

31. Use a hammer and punch and push pins (44) into shafts (42).

shafts (42). Remove the bearings from gears (45).

35. Remove snap ring (49) with tool (F).

36. Remove gear (50) and bearing (51) from shaft (48).

37. If necessary, remove the bearings from each end of shaft (48).

The No. 2 clutch piston (55) could stay with housing (52) when it is
removed. Use caution not to drop the No. 2 clutch piston.

42. Remove four discs (57) and the three remaining plates (58).

49. Use a hammer a punch and push pins (66) into shafts (67). Remove shafts (67) from carrier
(47).

50. Remove gears (69) and (74) and discs (68), (71), (72) and (75) from carrier (47).

51. Remove bearings (70) and (73) from the gears.

52. Remove pins (66) from shafts (67).

53. Use tool (G) and expand ring (76) into carrier (47). Remove bearing (77) and gear (78).

54. If necessary, remove bearing (77) from gear (78).

55. Remove gear (80) and piston (79) from housing (81).

56. Remove carrier (82).

57. Remove rings (84) and (85) from carrier (82).

58. Remove carrier (83) from carrier (82).

60. Use a hammer and punch and push pins (88) into shafts (87).

61. Remove shafts (87), discs (89) and (92) and gears (91) from carrier (82). Remove bearings
(90) from gears (91).

62. Remove pins (88) from the shafts.

63. Remove gear (94) from shaft (93).

64. Remove shaft (93) and housing (81) as an assembly.

65. Use tool (F) and remove snap ring (95) from shaft (93). Remove the shaft from the bearing.

66. Remove rings (96) and (97) from shaft (93).

67. Remove spiral lock ring (98) and bearing (99) from housing (81).

1. Clean and inspect all parts for wear or damage. Replace all parts that are worn or damaged. Put
clean SAE 30 Oil on all parts during assembly.

1. Install bearing (99) and spiral lock ring (98) in housing (81).

2. Install rings (96) and (97) on shaft (93).

3. Put shaft (93) in position in the housing and install snap ring (95) with tool (F).

4. Put shaft (93) and housing (81) in position on the cover assembly.

5. Install gear (94) on shaft (93).

6. Install bearings (90) in gears (91).

7. Put gears (91) and discs (89) and (92) in position in carrier (82) and install shafts (87).

NOTE: Make sure the rubber in pins (88) is not damaged. If the rubber in the pins is damaged,
replace the pins.

8. Align the hole in shaft (87) with the hole in the carrier, and install pin (88). Install the pin until
it is even with the surface of the carrier.

9. Install ring (86) on carrier (83).

10. Put carrier (83) in position in carrier (82).

11. Install rings (84) and (85) on carrier (82).

12. Put carrier (82) in position on the housing.

13. Install rings (100) and (101) on piston (79) with the lip of the rings up as shown. Put clean
SAE 30 Oil on the rings.

14. Install piston (79) in housing (81).

15. Install gear (80).

16. If bearing (77) was removed, use a press, and install bearing (77) on gear (78).

17. Use tool (G) and expand ring (76). Install gear (78) and bearing (77) in carrier (47).

18. Install bearings (70) and (73) in gears (69) and (74).

19. Put gears (69) and (74) and discs (68), (71), (72) and (75) in position in carrier (47) and install
shafts (67).

NOTE: Make sure the rubber in pins (66) is not damaged. If the rubber in the pins is damaged,
replace the pins.

20. Align the hole in shaft (67) with the hole in the carrier, and install pin (66). Install the pin until
it is even with the surface of the carrier.

21. Put ring (65) in position in carrier (47).

22. Compress the ring in carrier (47), and install the carrier in gear (64).

23. Install carrier (47) and the gear as an assembly.

24. Use tool (G), and install snap ring (63).

NOTICE

The bottom plate of plates (62) must be turned over to allow the clutch
return springs to put pressure on the bottom plate at location (X).

NOTE: Start with a plate, and alternate discs and plates until all of the discs and plates have been
installed.

25. Install four plates (62) and four discs (61).

26. Put plate (59) in position on the housing.

27. Install gear (60).

28. Install rings (102) and (103) on piston (55) with the lip of the rings up as shown. Put clean
SAE 30 Oil on the rings.

29. Install four rods (54) and four springs (56). Make sure springs (56) are in position on the
bottom plate of plates (62).

NOTE: The top plate of plates (58) must be installed with the small hole in the large tabs aligned
with rods (54). Start with a disc and alternate discs and plates until all of the discs and plates have
been installed.

30. Install four discs (57) and four plates (58).

31. Install piston (55) in housing (52).

32. Put housing (52) in position on plate (59).

33. Install three bolts (53) to hold housing (52) in place.

34. Use tooling (H) and install bearings (104) and (105) in shaft (48). Install bearing (104) until it
is 10 ± 0.05 mm (.39 ± .002 in) below the end of the shaft. Install bearing (105) until it is 15 ±
0.05 mm (.59 ± .002 in) below the end of the shaft. The inside diameter of the bearings must be
39.653 ± 0.039 mm (1.5611 ± .0015 in) after installation.

35. Align the notch in the inside race of bearing (51) with the dowel in shaft (48) and install the
bearing.

36. Put gear (50) in position on the shaft and install snap ring (49) with tool (F).

37. Put shaft (48) in position in the planetary group.

38. Install snap ring (46) to hold the shaft and bearing in position in carrier (47).

39. Install the bearings in gears (45).

40. Put gears (45) and two discs (43) in position in carrier (37) and install shafts (42).

NOTE: Make sure the rubber in pins (44) is not damaged. If the rubber in the pins is damaged,
replace the pins.

41. Align the hole in shaft (42) with the hole in the carrier, and install pin (44). Install the pin until
it is even with the surface of the carrier.

42. Install ring (41).

43. Put ring (40) in position in the carrier.

44. Compress the ring in carrier (37), and install the carrier in gear (38).

45. Put the carrier and gear (38) in position on the transmission.

46. Install rings (106) and (107) on piston (33). Install the rings with the lip up as shown. Put clean
oil on the rings.

47. Put springs (35) in position on rods (54).

NOTE: The top plate of plates (34) must be installed with the small hole in the large tabs aligned
with rods (54). Start with a disc, and alternate discs and plates until all of the discs and plates have
been installed.

48. Install three discs (36) and three plates (34).

49. Install piston (33) in housing assembly (32).

50. Put housing assembly (32) in position on the transmission.

51. Put plate (30) in position on gear (13), and install ring (31).

52. Put gear (13) in position in the transmission as shown.

53. Put gear (28) in position on the shaft, and install snap ring (29) with tool (F).

NOTE: Start with a disc and alternate discs and plates until all of the discs and plates have been
installed.

54. Install four discs (27) and three plates (26) in gear (13).

55. If carrier (24) was removed, heat the carrier to a temperature of 127° C to 166° C (260° F to
330° F) for a maximum of ten minutes, and install the carrier on housing (1) with the part
number up.

56. Install pin (23) to hold the carrier in place.

57. Install pin (25) until it extends 4.5 mm (.177 in) above the surface of the housing.

58. Install rings (21) and (22) on piston (18) with the lip of the rings as shown.

59. Put piston (18), coupling (17), springs (19) and plate (20) in position in housing (1).

60. Use tooling (E) and a press and compress the springs in housing (1). Install spiral lock ring
(16) on coupling (17).

NOTICE

New seal rings must be preloaded before they are installed to prevent
them from being damaged or broken. There is a correct method to
preload new seal rings prior to installation. Place your hands on each
end of the seal ring, and pull (wind) the ends several inches past each
other or until they almost make contact. See Figure 1. Use care to keep
the ring shaped like a circle. This will make an even bend (or ring
"set") all around the ring. When the seal ring is in the groove of the
carrier, the ends must butt together lightly. Do not bend the seal ring
as shown in Figure 2. This does not make an even bend all the way
around the ring.

Do not attempt to use this method to preload a used seal ring. Also, do
not use this procedure for cast iron seal rings. This will cause used or
cast iron seal rings to break.

61. Install two rings (14) and (15) in the carrier.

62. Install ring (12) in housing (1).

63. Install two 5/16 " - 18 NC forged eyebolts (11) in housing (1). Fasten a hoist to the eyebolts.

64. Use tool (D) to compress ring (12) and put housing (1) in position in gear (13). Make sure ring
(12) goes into the groove in gear (13).

65. Install ring (108) and (109) on piston (10). Put clean SAE 30 oil on the rings.

66. Install piston (10) in the housing assembly.

NOTE: The bottom plate of plates (9) must be installed with the small hole in the large tab
aligned with the rods and springs (7). Start with a plate, and alternate discs and plates until all of
the discs and plates have been installed.

67. Install two plates (9) and two discs (8).

NOTE: The notch in the inside race of bearing (6) must be facing toward snap ring (5) when the
bearing is installed.

68. Put bearing (6) in position in housing (3), and install snap ring (5) with tool (C).

69. Align the notch in the bearing in housing (3) with the dowel in housing (1), and put housing
(3) in position on the transmission. Install bolts (4) to hold the housing in place.

70. Install two 5/16 " - 18 NC forged eyebolts in housing (1). Fasten a hoist to the eyebolts.

71. Support the weight of housing (1) with the hoist, and install snap ring (2) with tool (A).

72. Check to make sure the pistons are free in their clutch housings with tool (J) as follows:

a. Put air (free of water) under a pressure of 690 to 1030 kPa (100 to 150 psi) into each of the five
oil passages.

b. If the pistons do not move, put a small amount of clean SAE 30 oil in each passage. Check for
movement again. If the pistons still do not move, the transmission must be disassembled and the
pistons and seals checked.

End By:

a. install transmission hydraulic control valves

b. connection of transmission and bevel gears.
