Writing Development

Through the term of this course, my writing has taken great leaps from where I started this

summer. Through the short duration of this course, I have learned more and improved my

writing than I have in my last four years of school. This was the first class I was instructed on

how to use Headings, subtitles, figures, and table of contents the proper way. These few things

I got introduced to have made my papers look more put together and taken me less time using

the power of Word. As, well my use of white space has increased greatly, making my paper ten

times easier on the eye. Besides all these improvements, I have gained and grasp of how to

write formally and then when to write less formally for the situation. The process of peer

editing, it improved not only my editing skills for my peers but gave me the skill to edit my own

writing more effectively, in turn making me a more proficient writer. I think even with the short

duration of this course due to the type of writing that I have never experienced or have been

taught has improved my writing greatly, making me prepared for the real world where

hopefully, one day, I will write my own white paper, email, or memo.

Course Goals

My goal at the beginning of the course was to become more proficient in technical

communication. I think my goal definitely got met by this course and your instruction. This

increase of skill in technical communication was a combination of my effort in the class with the

fantastic assignments that are very real word orientated. Due to these factors, along with the
intensive feedback I received from every assignment, made it very easy to improve my technical

communication and become more proficient in that task. I think other than the short term of

the course, which is out of our control, there is not much to improve in this course. I just wish I

had longer in this course to give all the information to settle in my head more and absorb more

information.

Assignments

The assignment I am most proud of is my white paper. I am most proud of my white paper

because it is on a topic I truly care about, and it is the assignment I spent the most time on.

Writing about the coral reefs and researching them for this paper is something I really enjoyed.

I enjoyed it, especially because when I go to the beach, I usually go to Florida, so writing about

the Florida Keys Reefs touched home, thinking about the damage that could be done to the

places I enjoy going if conservation isn’t taken seriously. If I had to add an assignment to this

course, I would have more email assignments guided toward specific goals because I feel like

this will be something we will all experience in the real working world. If I had to edit one

assignment, it would be the instruction packet. This was the beginning of the class, and I feel

like I did not give it my full potential. If I had a chance to start from scratch, I feel I would do

much better.
