TRANSLATORY MOTION

DEFINITION:
• The motion in which all the particles of a body move
through the same distance in the same time or the
motion in which all points of a moving body move
uniformly in the same direction is called translatory
motion.
EXAMPLES:
I) A car or a train moving along a road or track.
II) Firing of a bullet from a gun.
III) An apple falling from a tree.

TRANSLATORY MOTION is further classified

into
Rectilinear and Circular motion

1. Rectilinear Motion
2. The motion of objects in a straight path is known
as rectilinear motion. People riding in an elevator inside
the building is one of the examples.
3. Circular Motion
4. Circular motion is described as a movement of an object
while rotating along a circular path. Circular motion can
be either uniform or non-uniform. During uniform
circular motion the angular rate of rotation and speed
will be constant while during non-uniform motion the
rate of rotation keeps changing.
5. Examples of circular motion are carousels or merry-go-
rounds in parks, a car going around a roundabout, the
moon orbiting around the Earth or the Earth revolving
around the Sun.
APPLICATION:

• Translational motion is generally seen in rectilinear

motion when the body moves in a straight line.
• Moving an object down the slope with a simple push, a
car moving at the same speed in the same direction,
projectile motion of a ball thrown in air without any
spin are a few applications of translatory motion.
