INTRODUCTION

Trends in Twenty-First Century African Theatre and Performance is a collection

of regionally focused articles on African theatre and performance. The volume

provides a broad exploration of the current state of African theatre and

performance and considers the directions they are taking in the 21st Century. It

contains sections on current trends in theatre and performance studies, on

applied/community theatre and on playwrights. The chapters have evolved out

of a working group process, in which papers were submitted to peer-group

scrutiny over a period of four years, at four international conferences. The book

will be particularly useful as a key text for undergraduate and postgraduate

courses in non-western theatre and performance (where this includes African

theatre and performance), and would be a very useful resource for theatre

scholars and anyone interested in African performance forms and cultures.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in contemporary African

theatre and performance art. Many African theatre practitioners are exploring

new forms of expression and experimenting with different styles and

techniques. Some of the recent trends in African theatre performance include:

1. Incorporating traditional performance techniques: Many African theatre

practitioners are incorporating traditional performance techniques and

storytelling methods into their work. This is a way of preserving and celebrating

African cultural heritage.

2. Embracing technology: African theatre practitioners are also embracing

technology as a tool for creativity and innovation. They are using digital media,

multimedia, and other technologies to enhance their performances and reach

wider audiences.

3. Addressing social and political issues: African theatre practitioners are using

their work to address social and political issues such as corruption, human

rights, and gender inequality. Their performances are often a platform for

activism and social change.

4. Collaborating across borders: There is also a growing trend of collaboration

between African theatre practitioners from different countries. This enables

them to share ideas, techniques, and resources, and create performances that

reflect a diverse range of African experiences.

SOCIAL FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE

A social festival performance can refer to a variety of performances that take

place at a social festival. Social festivals typically involve large gatherings of
people who come together to celebrate a particular occasion or event, such as a
cultural festival, a music festival, or a community celebration.

The type of performance that takes place at a social festival can vary widely
depending on the nature of the festival itself. For example, a music festival may
feature performances by a variety of musical acts, ranging from local bands to
internationally renowned headliners. Other social festivals may include dance
performances, theatrical productions, spoken word performances, or visual arts
exhibitions.

Regardless of the specific type of performance, a social festival performance is
typically designed to entertain and engage the audience, while also celebrating
the spirit of the festival itself. Social festival performances can be a great way to
bring people together and create a sense of community and shared experience.

A festival is an extraordinary event celebrated by a community and centering on

some characteristic aspect or aspects of that community and
its religion or cultures. It is often marked as a local or national holiday, mela,
or eid. A festival constitutes typical cases of localization, as well as the high
culture-low culture interrelationship. Next to religion and folklore, a significant
origin is agricultural. Food is such a vital resource that many festivals are
associated with harvest time. Religious commemoration and thanksgiving for
good harvests are blended in events that take place in autumn, such
as Halloween in the northern hemisphere and Easter in the southern.

CARNIVAL PERFORMANCE

A carnival performance generally refers to a live entertainment show or act that

takes place during a carnival or fair. These performances can include a wide

range of acts, from music and dance shows to acrobatics, circus acts, and street

performances. Carnival performances are often colorful and lively, with

performers wearing costumes and using props to enhance the experience for the

audience.

Some popular carnival performances include parades, where groups of

performers march through the streets accompanied by music and dancing; aerial

acts, where performers use ropes, trapezes, and other equipment to perform

acrobatic stunts high up in the air; and fire dancing, where performers

manipulate flaming objects to create a visually stunning spectacle.

Carnival performances can be found all over the world, but they are particularly

associated with the annual carnivals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; New Orleans,

Louisiana; and Venice, Italy, among others.

Carnival typically involves public celebrations, including events such as

parades, public street parties and other entertainments, combining some

elements of a circus. Elaborate costumes and masks allow people to set aside

their everyday individuality and experience a heightened sense of social unity.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, African theatre is a vibrant and dynamic art form that continues

to evolve and adapt to changing social, cultural, and political contexts.
