Elements of Quality Control

Inspection of construction work at different stages
covers:

• Sampling, Identification, examination and field testing of

materials.
• Measurement and proportioning of construction
materials.
• Examination of layout, formwork, foundations, etc.
• Testing specimens in the laboratory.
• Observation of construction equipments.
• Preparation of records and reports

Quality Assurance Techniques

The important items required to be inspected
during construction are:
• Earthwork
• Masonry
• RCC
• Sanitary & Water Supply Services
• Electrical Services

Quality Assurance Techniques -

Earthwork
• Earthwork should be carried out after proper layout.
• The trenches in excavation should be protected
suitably depending on the type of soil and depth of
excavation.
• Proper earthwork in filling should be checked for
compaction in layers so as to avoid settlement at a
later stage.
• Compaction should be checked with reference to the
type of soil, method of compaction and the
specifications.

Quality Assurance Techniques -

Masonry
• All masonry works to be inspected for type of
masonry, materials, bond, alignment, and verticality.
• Verticality can be checked by using a plumb bob.
• Proper filling of joints with mortar.
• The proportion of mortar is checked before mixing.
• Strength of bricks is checked by compression tests.
• Curing of masonry by a suitable method should be
checked and ensured.

Reinforcement
• Splicing of reinforcement should be avoided at
points of maximum stress.
• Bar should be properly lapped or/and welded for
a sufficient length.
• Stirrups in beams and columns should not be
positioned until after completion of the erection
of main steel in the form work.
• Proper cover to reinforcements as per
specifications should be checked and ensured.
• Checking of correctness of reinforcement and its
measurement.

Quality Assurance Techniques – Plain

Cement Concrete
• Proper mix design
• Proper concreting practices.
• Proper batching – measuring correct quantities of
ingredients in order to obtain uniform and
homogenous concrete.
• Careful handling and transportation of mixed
concrete is essential to avoid segregation.
• Full compaction of placed concrete should be
ensured by vibration or manual rodding.

Sanitary and Water Supply Sources
• All sewage lines embedded in floor or underground
should be checked for
– slope,
– alignment,
– leak-proofing of joints and
– stability of base.
• Inspection, measurement and testing should be carried
out before embedding these services.
• Covers of manholes and inspection chambers should
be checked for strength.
• Suitable arrangement of roof drainage should be
checked.

Electrical Services
• Cables, switches, panels and meters should be
provided as per specifications and design.
• The cable layout should be designed and
indicated on the drawings.
• Specification and design should consider
present and future requirements.
• Effectiveness of earthing should be checked to
ensure safety against electric hazards.
