III. PROCEDURE

A. Drill

• Prayer
• Checking of attendance

B. Pre-reading

• Ask the students to get their Oslo paper, glue, and brown, green,
and red coloured paper.
• Say: Today, I want you to tear your coloured papers and form it as a
tree and apple on your Oslo paper.

• Give the students enough time to work on this activity for 10

minutes.
• Once the time is over, ask at least 5 volunteers to present and give
one thing that a tree could give us.
• Then, post the two strips of papers with the word “Generous” and
“Sacrifice”. Discuss these two words that they will encounter in the
story.
C. Reading

• Say: Today, we will read another story. Do you have any idea what
is this story all about?

• Give the copy of story entitled “The Giving Tree “by Shel Silverstein.
• Say: While I’m reading this story, I want you to look for its moral. Also,
during reading I may call someone to continue reading after
my part, so I want everyone to be attentive.
• To make sure that students are engaged in reading, asking different
person to read each part of the story.

D. Post-Reading

• Post/project the chart of Elements of a short story.

• Say: These are the elements of a short story. We use this to better
understand the story that we read.
• Discuss each element of short story and look for these elements
in the story “The Giving Tree”.
• You may also use these questions for better understanding:

o When the boy was little, what did he want from the tree?
o What did the boy want from the tree when he was a
grown man and had a family?
o What did the boy want from the tree when he was a lot
older?
o The last time the boy wanted something from the tree,
what did the boy (now an old man)
want?
o What did the boy give the tree?

• Say: Now that we know what are the elements of a short story, it
also teaches us that in life we are not suppose to receive only
but we also need to give. To create relationship with others we
need to give and receive and it will surely bring joy to
everyone’s heart.

E. Application

• Using a stationary paper, write a letter for the tree.

• Say: If you were the boy in the story, what will be your message
to the giving Tree?
• Give them 20 minutes to work on this.
