People of different countries have quite different life styles. We American are wasteful people, (1)

It can take up to 12 palm leaves to make a top quality hat. Each leaf is split up to 25 times to obtain a

Seeking a new life and hoping a significant (1) in their standard of living, foreign
workers began flocking into Western Europe during the 1950s. In Britain, some of the first immigrants
arriving from the West Indies and the Indian subcontinent were welcomed by brass bands, but the dream

Attracted by the promise to earn good money and learn new skills, the reality they found was often
one of low wages and, in many case, unemployment. Some did not adapt (3) to life in a country

cities, areas that were already fraught with social tensions caused by poverty and poor housing. There
were cases of open hostility towards the newcomers; riots (5) out in Notting Hill, West London

effect of not only speeding up the pace of economic change in the postwar period, but also transforming
Western Europe into a multiracial society.

It is true that keeping fit will benefit a person’s health in many ways. It has become clear in recent years,
that a large number of people are doing less and less exercise and this is now causing many serious
illnesses, putting a strain on doctors and hospitals. However, some experts believe that too much exercise
can do just as much (1) .
Although it is true that moderate exercise such as walking can be very beneficial to a person’s health, it is
not the only one factor (2) keeps us healthy. Diet is also extremely important and I would argue
that it is probably even more important than exercise, although the ideal is for both of these factors to
work together. It seems to me that many people are unwilling to put in the effort required to become fitter.
(3) , too much exercise can also cause problems. So people are urged to take moderate exercise
and eat moderately healthily rather than embarking on extreme diets and training. In too many instances,
ultra–fit people have had heart attacks or dropped down dead.
In all, governments need to find ways of (4) people to take responsibility for their own health.
People need to realize that eating healthy food does not have to cost a (5) , nor is it difficult to
prepare healthy meals themselves. People need to be better educated about their health.\

Many parents believe that they should begin to teach their children to read when they are slightly
more than toddlers. This is fine if the child chows a real interest but forcing a child could be counter-
productive if she isn't ready. Wise parents will have a hopeful attitude and take the lead from their child.
(1) they should provide is a selection of stimulating toys, books and other activities.
Nowadays there is plenty of good material available for young children, and of course, seeing plenty of
books in use them to read.
Of course, books are no longer the only source of stories and information. There is also a huge
range of videos, which can reinforce and extend the pleasure a child finds in a book and are (2)
helping to increase vocabulary and concentration. Television gets a bad review as far as
children are concerned, mainly because too many spend too much time watching programmes not
intended for their age (3) . Too many television programmes induce an incurious, uncritical
attitude that is going to make learning much more difficult. (4) , discriminating viewing of
programmes designed for young children can be useful. Just as adults enjoy reading a book after seeing it
serialised on television, so children will pounce on books which (5) their favourite television
characters and videos can add a new dimension to a story known from a book.

in 1998 were headed by one parent, usually a woman. In a few families in the United States, there are no
children. These (2) couples may believe that they would not make good parents; they may

The invention of the mobile phone has undoubtedly revolutionized the way people communicate and
influenced every aspect of our lives. The issue is whether this technological innovation has (1)
more harm than good. In order to answer the question, we must first turn to the types of consumers.
Presumably, most parents (2) are always worrying about their children’s safety buy mobile
phones for them to track their whereabouts. We can also assume that most teenagers want mobile phones
to avoid missing out on social contact. In this context, the advantages are clear. (3) , we cannot
deny the fact that text messages have been used by bullies to intimidate fellow students. There is also (4)
evidence that texting has affected literacy skills.
The widespread use of mobile phone has, out of question, affected adult consumers too. What employee,
on the way home from work, would be reluctant to answer a call from their boss? Apparently, only 18%
of us, according to a survey, are willing to switch off our mobile phones once we've left the office.
Admittedly, mobile phones can be intrusive but there are obvious benefits to possessing one. Personally
speaking, they are invaluable when it comes to making social or business arrangements at short (5)

GLOBAL WARMING
Few people now question the reality of global warming and its effects on the world's climate.
Many scientists (31) the blame for recent natural disasters on the increase in the
world's temperatures and are convinced that, more than ever before, the Earth is at risk from the forces
of the wind, rain and sun. (32) to them, global warming is making extreme weather events, such
as hurricanes and droughts, even more (33) and causing sea levels all around the world to rise.
Environmental groups are putting pressure on governments to take action to reduce the amount of
carbon dioxide which is given (34) by factories and power plants, thus attacking the
problem at its source. They are in favor of more money being spent on research into solar, wind and wave
energy devices, which could then replace existing powerstation.
Some scientists, (35) , believe that even if we stopped releasing carbon dioxide and other
gases into the atmosphere tomorrow, we would have to wait several hundred years to notice the results.
Global warming, it seems, is to stay.

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF BONSAI CRIME
Bonsai trees have always been a source of great fascination to people. They are perfect miniatures,
grown in pots small enough to sit on a windowsill. You have to keep reminding yourself that these
frees are actually real and identical to their larger cousins in all (1) except their size. Rather
like other small and perfectly-formed artifacts, bonsai trees command quite a high price in the
marketplace and so it doesn't come as a great surprise to find that they also (2) the attention of

homes of growers and collectors, then repotted and trimmed by unscrupulous dealers, to be sold on, at
good prices, to (3) buyers.
One of Britain's top collectors of bonsai trees, Paul Widdington, believes that he has found a
solution, however. After losing his life's work, valued at £250,000, when burglars broke into his home one
night, Paul decided to (4) the possibilities of electronically tagging the trees he bought as a

system complete with infra-red detectors, in hishome.

exercise can give you a lot of fun. When you are fit and healthy, you will find you
look better and feel better. You will develop more energy and self-confidence.
Every time you move, you are exercising. The human body is designed to bend, stretch, run,
jump and climb. (3) it does, the stronger and fitter it will become. Best of all,
exercise is fun. It's what your body likes doing most-keeping on the move.
Physical exercise is not only good for your body. People who take regular exercise are usually
happier, more relaxed and more alert than people who sit around all day. Try an experiment-next time

CRITICISM
It can take a long time to become successful in your chosen field, no matter how talented you are.
One thing you have to be aware of is that you will face criticism along the way. The world is full of
people who would rather say something negative than positive. If you’ve made up your (1) to
achieve a certain goal, such as writing a novel, don’t let the negative criticism of others (2) you

someone says you’re totally in the lack of talent, ignore them. That’s negative criticism. If, (4) ,
someone advises you to revise your work and gives you a good reason for doing so, you should consider
their suggestions carefully. There are many film stars who were once out of work . There are many
famous novelists (5) made a complete mess of their first novel – or who didn’t, but had to keep on
approaching hundreds of publishers before they could get it published. Being successful does depend on
luck, to a certain extent. But things are more likely to turn out well if you persevere and stay positive.

ROSES
According to fossil fuel records, roses are over 35 million years old and they were cultivated in
China about 5,000 years ago. A Chinese emperor in the 6th century B.C. apparently had over 600 books

and encouraged the breeding of new ones. This led to the flowers becoming increasingly popular, and in
Britain at that time roses became so (4) that they were often used as currency in local markets.

Sociologists have been carrying out research into the social pressures of being a teenager. Many
