OBJECTIVES
Determine how to solve problems involving
radicals

What’s In?
The radical sign is used to denote the
positive or the principal root of a number.
The word "radical" comes from the Latin
word "radix", meaning "root” was used in the
13th century or so, and was abbreviated as
“R” or R with a slash through the right leg of
the R, like the Rx symbol at pharmacies.

What’s In?
The symbol that looks like a check (radical sign
without the "roof") originated in Germany, in the
1500's. It started out looking quite like a musical
note. If you had a long expression under the radical
sign, the expression was put in parentheses, and
later, placed with a line over it. This is where the
current symbol came from. Descartes in his _La
Geometrie_ (1637) seems to be the first to place the

line on top for grouping.

Why is a square root called a
root in the first place?
Answer:
A root is the source of something. If you square
a number, the number it came from is the root, as
3/22/2023
if the square grew from it. Sample Footer Text 6

A certain number is the same as the cube root of
16 times the number.
A number is equal to its square root.
Five times the square root of 1 less than a number
is equal to 3 more than the number.
Twice the square root of a number is 14.
The square root of four more than five times the
3/22/2023
number is 8.

Example If each side of a square garden is increased by 4
meters, the area becomes 144 square meters.
What is the measure of the side of the garden
after increasing it?
Let x be the measure of the side of the garden before increasing it.
(What is the formula in getting the area of a square?)
A =x 2
144 = ( x + 4 )

Example If each side of a square garden is increased by 4
meters, the area becomes 144 square meters.
What is the measure of the side of the garden
after increasing it?
STEP 2: Solve the equation. STEP 3: Check the value obtained.
( x + 4)
2
= 144
( x + 4)
2
= 144
x + 4 = 12
x = 12 − 4

x=8 The side length of the garden after
increasing it is 12 meters. Sample Footer Text 14
