How is language used in the poem “The Woodspurge”

to create effect on the reader?

“The Woodspurge” written by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is a poem that talks about
nature and the plant itself. The language that the poem uses in this poem creates a sad effect
on the reader. In fact, we can even say that it creates a depressing effect on the reader
because of its language. Because of the effect that it creates to the reader, we can guess that
the poet is sad and depressed too.

As mentioned before, the poem creates a depressing and sad effect on the reader. The poet
uses a type of language that creates a sad effect. For example, the rhyme he uses which is
repetition, echoes and reflects the poet's mood. In the first stanza, the poet explains how the
wind is "dead", and we can see, that this is a negative thing. Another example, his "lips"
can't even speak, becauseof his aunguish. In the poem we can also see how the poet talks
about some weeds tat only grow withought sunlight, out of the sun, this can represent or
symbolise the depressive mood or state. When the poet says "One thing then learnt remains
to me" it looks as if the poet dosen't have nothing, suggesting that he has lost everything
except for that. At the end of the poem the poet eplains how the weed has "flowered",
although it is not a flower. Therefore, in overall, the poem has a depressing, negative and
sad effect on the reader.
