Class Meeting Days and Times: Online Class

Course Description:
Provides students with the opportunity to gain algebraic knowledge needed for many fields such as engineering,
business, science, computer technology, and mathematics. Graphical and numerical methods support the study of
functions and their corresponding equations and inequalities. Students will study linear, quadratic, polynomial,
rational, exponential, logarithmic, inverse, composite, radical, and absolute value functions; systems of equations
and inequalities; modeling applied problems; and curve fitting techniques. Previous credit in any MAC class
precludes credit in MAC 1105.

Required Materials:
o MyMathLab (register and access through MyHCC/Canvas)
Log on instructions and class code provided on CANVAS
o etext College Algebra Essentials, 6th Edition by Blitzer included in MyMathLab
o approved scientific calculator (NO communication devices or shared calculators during exams)

Prerequisites:
MAT 1033 with a grade of at least “C” or appropriate placement criteria.

Students should have a working knowledge of all material covered in the prerequisite courses: arithmetic;
exponents and exponential rules; complex numbers; polynomial operations; factoring; simplifying radical and
rational expressions; solving linear, quadratic, rational, and radical equations; interval notation; function
notation; graphing linear equations and inequalities in two variables, etc.

Students who made a "C" in the previous course, did not take the previous course in the immediately preceding
semester, or did not cover all of the required objectives in the previous course will be starting out already
behind and will need to spend additional time out of class (at tutoring, during office hours, etc.) to ensure they
are adequately prepared to succeed.

Students are strongly encouraged to ask questions.

GRADING SYSTEM

Chapter Tests (60%):

There are four tests given throughout the term. No make-up tests will be given. However, the final exam score
may count as a replacement test score for a missed test or for the lowest test score if all tests are taken.

Final Exam (10%):

There is a cumulative final exam. The final exam counts as part of the grade for all students.

Honorlock will proctor your exams this semester. Honorlock is an online proctoring service that allows you to
take your exam from the comfort of your home. You DO NOT need to create an account or schedule an
appointment in advance. Honorlock is available 24/7 and all that is needed is a computer, a working webcam,
microphone and a stable Internet connection.

To start an exam using HonorLock:

1. You will need Google Chrome
2. Download the Honorlock Chrome Extension at http://www.honorlock.com/extension/install
3. When you are ready to test, log into Canvas, go to your course, and click on your exam.
4. Click Launch Proctoring to begin the Honorlock authentication process, where you will take a picture of
yourself, show your government issued ID (not HCC ID), and complete a scan of your room.
a. Honorlock will be recording your exam session by webcam, microphone and your screen.
b. Honorlock also has an integrity algorithm that can detect search-engine use, so please do not attempt to
search for answers, even if it's on a secondary device.

Honorlock support is available 24/7/365. If you encounter any issues, you may contact us by live chat,
phone (844-243-2500), and/or email (support@honorlock.com).

Quizzes (15%):
Quizzes are assigned in MyMathLab. Students have two attempts to complete each quiz with a 120-minute
time limit and help features disabled. No make-up or extra attempts will be given. The grade for each quiz
will be the better of the two scores.

Homework (15%):
Homework assignments are accessed through MyMathLab and should be treated appropriately:

i) Write the exercise down on paper.

ii) Fully complete the exercise by hand even if the question format is multiple-choice. You do not want
the test to be one of the first/few times you actually work a problem on paper start to finish.
iii) Input the answer into MyMathLab to get feedback. This is analogous to flipping to the back of the
book to check if your answer on paper is right, only faster.
iv) If you use a help feature to work through an exercise, come back to it and attempt a Similar Exercise
without needing to see an example.
v) Use the Ask My Instructor help feature to resolve ANY questions/doubts you have, even if you
wound up getting the correct answer. This is analogous to bringing a problem to me in person, but
you can get results much faster. (Of course, bringing questions to office hours is encouraged!)

For Technical Support go to https://support.pearson.com/getsupport for online help or call 1-800-677-6337.

A homework score less than 90% is considered a poor grade. If you do 90% of the homework and understand 4
of every 5 steps taken, that’s only 90% x 4/5 = 72% understanding—barely passing!

Success in this course is dependent upon the amount of time and effort spent working through the
homework to understand the material (including instructions, definitions, and mathematical terminology
and symbols) not time and effort spent memorizing and imitating examples.

GRADING SCALE

A 90 – 100 %
B 80 – 89 %
C 70 – 79 %
D 60 – 69 %
F 0 – 59 %

Grades are rounded to the nearest whole number. So 89.7% rounds to an A while 89.4% rounds to a B.

Final average rounding:

Example: If your final average is an 89.5% you will receive an A. If your final average is a
89.4% you will receive a B.

See pacing chart for due dates of assignments.

Testing Policies: HONOR LOCK

Additional class/college information.

College classes (especially online) require student driven work. I expect that you will work on your own 2 to 3
hours each week for each credit.

This class is a 3 credit class thus you are expected to work between 6-9 hours EACH WEEK, please be sure you
have adequate time/ time management skills to devote to my class before the end of drop/add week.

Additionally, I am very strict on my due dates/extension. No extra time or additional attempts will be given for
any homework/quiz/test. My grading scale is set as follow regarding rounding of grades:
89.4 will be a B, 89.5 will be an A

79.4 will be a C, 79.5 will be an B

69.4 will be a D, 69.5 will be a C

59.4 will be a F, 59.5 will be a D.

Please do not attempt to ask for alternate rounding at the end of the semester, your grade will not change!
