THE CIVILIZATION

OF AMERICA

The civilization of Caral, considered the oldest in America as it

developed on the central coast of Peru.
The Aztecs founded the city of Tenochtitlán in the middle of
Lake Texcoco.

What is most striking is that the great civilizations

of the Americas developed in very difficult places:
Mayans, in the humid and unproductive jungles of
Yucatan; Aztecs, on an island in the middle of a
lake surrounded by enemies; and the Incas, on very
high lands with relatively low agricultural
productivity.

THE AZTECS
The Aztecs were a people who, through military
alliances with others and population groups,
rapidly expanded and dominated the central and
southern area of present-day Mexico.

They developed an economy based on

taxation, agricultural technology, and trade.
The Aztecs' way of life was based on family
and home life, agriculture with the cultivation
of land, religion and war, and art.

They were renowned for the ferocity of their

warriors and the wealth of their cities. Also,

The Aztecs were warrior and religious minds,

whose main patron was the Sun god,
Huitzilopochtli. In his name they made human
sacrifices, with the warriors of the conquered
ethnic groups.

The Aztecs developed their own artistic and

architectural style that was linked to their
religious beliefs and practices. In addition, they
created writing and numbering systems, which
allowed them to record their stories, their
myths, and organize their society.
