I. Background and Business Concept

Air fresheners are fragrance-emitting consumer products that are used in homes

or commercial interiors such as living room, kitchen, restrooms, hallways, vestibules,

and other smaller indoor areas, as well as larger areas such as hotel lobbies, car

dealerships, medical facilities, public arenas, and other large interior spaces. In vehicles,

car fresheners are utilized. These items generally disperse fragrance and other odor-

controlling agents into the air. Nowadays, there are several techniques and brands of air

fresheners available. Electric fan air fresheners, gravity drip hygiene odor control

cleaning systems, passive non-mechanical evaporating fragrance diffusers, metered

aerosol time-operated mist dispensers, sprays, candles, oils, gels, beads, and plug-ins

are some of the several types of air fresheners.

However, despite of its popularity, there are concerns that these items contribute

to indoor air pollution and represent a health risk, particularly when used for an extended

period of time. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are released into the air by air

fresheners. A VOC is a compound that quickly converts to vapor or gas at ambient

temperature. The chemicals in air fresheners and their secondary pollutants are

considered to cause health issues. Secondary pollutants are created when the

chemicals in a product react with the ozone already present in the air. Even when these

products are used as prescribed, there are concerns regarding long-term health effects.

In addition, unintentional accidents caused by these items have been

documented, including burns when flammable air fresheners were lit by a nearly flame.

On the other hand, a mosquito repellent is a chemical that repels mosquitos,

stopping them from biting people and feasting on human blood. It generally comprises

an active component that repels mosquitos as well as secondary chemicals that, among

other things, dilute the active ingredient to the correct concentration and aid in the

release of the active ingredient when needed. Commonly, mosquito repellents come in

the form of creams, lotions, oils, and sticks that are applied directly to the skin. They are

also available in aerosol and pump-spray forms for application on the skin and on

clothes. Insecticides, on the other hand, are used to kill insects, whilst mosquito

repellents are intended to repel them.

DEET, also known as N-diethyl-m-toluamide, is used in most insect repellents

and has been deemed "safe" when used as directed. However, there has recently been

a lot of debate about the safety of insect repellents. Some research has linked certain

mosquito-repellent technologies to cancer. According to studies, the chemicals in

mosquito repellents are dangerous to inhale and can cause major lung issues or allergic

reactions. These compounds can be dangerous to inhale in big doses and may

potentially cause cancer.

With such problems, the proponents came up with the idea of introducing a new

2-in-1 product which features both Air Freshener and Mosquito Repellent. Safe

Scents aims to offer fragrant and safe home to its target market. It can be used as spray

or liquid formula for humidifiers. Furthermore, since it is budget friendly, it will avoid its

target market to buy individual product because of its dual purpose.

In addition, Safe Scents will be guaranteed 100% safe and effective product that

is made from all natural ingredients. Having 0% chemical in its component, Safe Scents

is proven to be better than any chemical-based air freshener and mosquito repellents

that already exist in the market.

The product main ingredients are cinnamon (air freshener or deodorizer), lemon

grass and oregano (mosquito repellent) and some additional fruits and flowers like

lemon, peppermint, apple, rose petals, orange, and Arabian jasmine to add

refreshing and invigorating scents.

Indeed, Safe Scents will offer product that are “Naturally Fragrant, Naturally

Safe!”

II. Description of the Business

Safe Scents is a sole proprietorship type of business that will produce a newly-

innovative and eco-friendly 2-in-1 product that both features air freshener and

mosquito repellent.

Safe Scents will be available in different scent variants specifically Citrus Mint

Scent, Rose Apple Scent and Orange Jasmine Scent. In addition, it will also be

available in 1 liter and 500 ml bottle, and as well as in 500 ml, 200 ml and 100 ml

spray bottle.

Since the product is made from all natural ingredients, Safe Scents is guaranteed

0% chemical, thus 100% safe and effective.

III. Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives

a. Vision

Safe Scents aspires to be the top producer of products that are 100%

made from all natural ingredients in Pulilan, Bulacan as we help the Pulileños

realize the essential benefits of using products made from natural ingredients

instead of using chemical-based commodities.

b. Mission

We aim to provide high-quality products that are chemical free and

guaranteed made from all natural ingredients at competitive prices to create

exceptional value for our customers.

Safe Scents hopes to develop strong presence in the community by

becoming a well-known store offering a wide variety of quality all natural products

while building harmonious relationship with the customers.

Specifically, Safe Scents aims to:

• To develop a product that is locally made from Pulilan using all

natural ingredients;

• To be recognized as the top producer of products made from natural

ingredients in Pulilan;

• To serve the community with customer satisfaction;

• To increase the sales of products made from natural ingredients;

• To build awareness and support for our local products;

• To showcase new product to the target market; and

• To gain profit and contribute to the growing economy of Pulilan.

Safe Scents will be known as the new eco-friendly and health-friendly way to

eliminate foul odors at home or even anywhere and as well as to repel the stubborn

mosquitoes. As its name suggests, Safe Scents will be guaranteed 100% safe and

effective product that is made from all natural ingredients. Having 0% chemical in its

component, Safe Scents is proven to be better than any chemical-based air freshener

and mosquito repellents that already exist in the market.

The image shown above is the business logo. The shape of the logo (whimsical

and fluid rounded shape) represents purity and protection just like what the business

aspires to give to its customer [1].

In addition, The proponents chose two (2) shades of green, dark green

(#01642F) and lime green (#74B717) to signify the mission of the company in delivering

products which are 0% chemical and 100% made from all natural ingredients [2].

“Safe Scents” is the business name [3]


. The business name comes from the

combination of two (2) words “safe” and “scents” which the company aims to give to its

customer. “Safe” in a way that the product will not pose any harm to its customers since

it is made from natural ingredients. Moreover, the word “safe” manifests the aim of the

product to keep its customers away from the mosquitoes that might cause serious health

problems to human. On the other hand, the word “scents” embodies the air freshener

component of the product. Aside from repelling stubborn mosquitoes, this product is also

an effective odor eliminator especially for indoor use. Having said so, the company will

introduce different varieties of scents that the customer will surely love.

After extensive research and experimentations, several natural ingredients were

found out to be effective in eliminating unwanted odors and as well as repelling

mosquitoes. For instance, cinnamon was proven to be a very effective natural spice to

remove foul odors at home and at the same time, it has also the aroma that mosquitoes

truly hate. To add up, oregano leaves is also considered as an excellent insect repellent.

It has some active ingredients such as carvacrol, thymol and α-terpinene reported being

highly effective in repelling mosquitoes. With this, Safe Scents have able to produced

products that are “Naturally Fragrant, Naturally Safe!” [4].

Lastly, in order to represent the natural ingredients of the product, the company

uses the figure of green leaves [5]


. It embodies the company’s promise of giving

guaranteed 0% chemical yet 100% safe and effective product.

The powerful combination of lemon and peppermint works effectively as both

ingredients have the ability to deodorize indoor areas and as well as repelling

mosquitoes.

The citrusy fresh smell of lemons makes them a natural choice

to freshen a room. Additionally, its citrus scent also naturally repels mosquitoes. On the

other hand, minty fragrance of peppermint alleviates feelings of nervous tension and

stress, and soothes feelings of irritability. Peppermint’s scent is also unpleasant to

a mosquito's keen senses.

need help staying on task. A pleasant smell like that of the rose can reduce stress and

lower the heart rate. The rose aroma has been shown to have anti-depressant benefits

as it is traditionally used to calm and uplift.

Additionally, research has indicated that the smell of crisp apples may actually

help ease the pain of a migraine headache.

The perfect blend of orange and Arabian Jasmine also offers a great refreshing

scent. The smell of orange; like any citrus, has an upbeat and cheerful scent reminiscent

of summer and warm weather. On the other hand, scent of Jasmine flower acts as an

antidepressant, it leaves you feeling uplifted, calm, and positive, which assists with

depression. As what mentioned earlier, the citrus scent of orange is also effective in

repelling mosquitoes.

Product packaging is essential to a company's growth and marketing strategy.

Packaging may also be utilized to communicate to customers who you are and what you

stand for as a company. A product's packaging can scream to the customer, "Buy me!" It

must be captivating, create a tone, and provoke a spectrum of emotions.

With this, the packaging that will be used for Safe Scents will be Clear Bottle,

and Clear Spray Bottle that comes in 1 liter, 500 ml, 200 ml and 100 ml. The

proponents decide to have variants when it comes to product sizes so that the

customers have variety to choose from … depending on their needs.

The figure above shows the packaging of Safe Scents in 1 liter and 500 ml Clear

Bottle. This packaging variant is perfect for refilling, and as well as for purchasing

essential liquids for humidifiers.

Using clear bottle as packaging is beneficial because unlike glass containers,

plastic bottles are rugged and resilient; they don’t shatter into sharp pieces when

dropped, making products and packaging safe to handle. The same resilience makes

plastic bottles unlikely to leak or burst, protecting the contents as well as exterior

shipping cartons. Moreover, the light weight of plastic bottles minimizes the cost of

transporting materials to recycling centers.

Furthermore, the proponents also have a plan to have a Refilling station of Safe

Scents Product in which the customers will bring the empty bottle of Safe Scent Product

to the station and it will be refilled. In This strategy the customer will save more money.

On the other hand, it will benefit also the proponents because the production expense

will be lessening which is good impact to the income. Aside from these, it will be

environmental friendly because the proponents will lessen the number of bottle being

used.

Safe Scents’ target market is divided into three (3) different psychographics

namely

✓ HOUSEHOLDS – usually, we will target “mother” as our target market because

they are the in-charge in the household matter. They are the type of customers

who usually buy product that has multi-purpose and use other budget to another

necessities.

✓ WORKERS/STUDENTS - during this pandemic most of our works are usually

home-based and the class is through online. There are a lot of workers/students

who works in front their computers or laptop at their bedroom all day long.

Typically, they use humidifier to makes them relax. Therefore, Safe Scent will

help them to be more relax and as well make them safe while they are working

as Safe Scents can also be used as Liquid solution for humidifier.

✓ HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY - Hospitality industry can be defined and understood

as an industry which provides facility for stay, food and complete related services

for the comfort and leisure of the travelers and visitors. With this, Safe Scents

can also be distributed or supplied to different hotels, motels, restaurant and

resorts to give their customer a much satisfying and comfortable service.

2.) Pricing Strategy

Cost plus pricing is a cost-based method for setting the prices of goods and

services. Under this approach, you add together the direct material cost, direct labor

cost, and overhead costs for a product, and to it a markup percentage (to create a profit

margin) in order to derive the price of the product.

In this product, 65% of the Total Production Cost (Direct Material Cost+ Direct

Labor Cost+ Overhead Cost) will serve as the Markup Price of the product. Cost per

Bottle will be then added in the end to get the selling price. Estimation will also be

applied if necessary.

For instance, the total production cost of a liter of Safe Scents in Citrus Mint

Scent was computed to be P174.53 per liter. Following the cost-based method

approach, the selling price of product is derived as;

TOTAL PRODUCTION COST x MARKUP PERCENTAGE = MARK UP PRICE

P174.53 x 65% = P113.44

A good location is essential for drawing consumers. A well-located shop also

facilitates supply and distribution. The capacity of a store to advertise itself and deal with

competition from other companies can be influenced by its location.

Safe Scents will use both direct and indirect distribution channel and in selling

the goods into the consumer. In direct distribution, the consumers can go directly in the

Safe Scents’ physical store.

In terms of indirect selling, intermediaries will be crucial in getting the company's

product to the customer. Supermarkets, grocery stores will be among the target retailers

and wholesalers for the product. Online platforms like Lazada and Shopee will also be

utilized.

d. Promotional Strategy

Promotion is the process of promoting a business so that the general public is

aware of it. It's not as easy as simply telling someone about the product. The general

public must be aware of your existence. This includes increasing brand awareness

through various means in order to improve sales and establish and foster brand loyalty.

Provided below are the different promotional strategies, Safe Scents will be

focusing into;

1.) Sales Promotion – Natural Mosquito Repellent will use buy one, get one free

promotions, seasonal discounts, contests, samples, and even unique

coupons with expiration dates to attract clients. This will entice potential

clients to buy the merchandise.

2.) Personal Selling- since Safe Scents will have its physical store in Pulilan,

Bulacan, personal selling will be the most effective approach to market the

company's products.

3.) Advertising – It includes giving information to the public by using brochures,

V. Sales Management Plan

The present location of our physical store is at Pulilan Regional Road,

Poblacion, Pulilan, Bulacan near San Isidro Labrador Church. The

proponents strategically chose this location because there is a lot business

located in given location. By choosing this location, it can generate numerous

customers since this establishment or businesses are popular in the place.

Given the fact that is located near well-known establishments in the

municipality, it is also located along national highway where high-traffic is

visible which can generate income. Furthermore, the proponents are also

planning to utilize different online platforms such as Facebook, Shopee and

Lazada to sell Safe Scents products. The target market of the proponents are

divided into 3 psychographics namely; Household, Student or worker and

Hospitality Industry.

Safe Scents is “Safe” in a way that the product will not pose any harm to

its customers since it is made from natural ingredients. Moreover, the word

“safe” manifests the aim of the product to keep its customers away from the

mosquitoes that might cause serious health problems to human. On the other

hand, it is “scents” because it’s embodies the air freshener component of the

product.

Aside from repelling stubborn mosquitoes, this product is also an effective

odor eliminator especially for indoor use. Having said so, the company will

introduce different varieties of scents that the customer will surely love.

VI. Business Legal Requirements

i. Permits and Licenses

All business must be registered with government requirements. Safe Scent

must comply business registration requirement to be authorized and eligible to

operate. The following are some of the most typical requirements for starting a

business.

1. Barangay Clearance: This will attest to Safe Scent's compliance with the

requirements of the barangay in which the business is located.

2. DTI REGISTRATION: One of the DTI's responsibilities is to manage the

registration of the company names the registration of a business name is

required. Must be completed before the business can begin operations by

the proprietor is responsible for registering the business name with the

DTI ensured that no other person or group may use the anywhere around

the Philippines can register a business name.

3. Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR): Every business must register with the

BIR for tax purposes. prior to the start of its operation Any company

should obtain a company number and register with the appropriate

authorities the Revenue District Office (RDO) has jurisdiction over the

location where the main office can be found the company's tax

identification number is It is permanent and is used by businesses for a

variety of purposes.

4. Municipal Permit or Licenses: All businesses must obtain a mayor's

permit or municipal license. They must obtain a license from the

municipality or city in which they are located. Starting a business

necessitates the acquisition of the following permits and licenses. specific
