Directions
1. Read each story.

2. Choose the word in the tone-ometer below the story


that describes the author’s tone. Color the mercury red
to the level of the word you chose.

3. Get a large sheet of construction paper. Using a


black marker, write “Tone-ometers” at the top of the
paper.

4. Cut out a story and its matching tone-ometer.

5. Glue the story below the title. Glue the tone-ometer


directly below the matching story.

6. Repeat steps 4-5 with each story.


Teacher Notes
The teacher will need to gather the following materials:
• Story worksheets- When I photocopy these pages, I staple them into
a set.
• Large sheets of construction paper (1 per student)
• Student directions page (I place this under my document camera for
students to refer to as they complete the project.)
The students will need:
• Pencil
• Black marker
• Glue
• Scissors
• Red crayon, marker, or colored pencil
