FADE IN:
BANG! BANG!
She looks back and sees no one; but only hears voices.
MALE VOICE
(southern accent)
C'mon Jimbo! We can't let her get
away!
N'Kia shoots across the bridge and heads into the edge of the
forest. In front of her is a thick green wall of bushes.
YOUNG N'KIA
(African accent)
If I can just make it back to the
Motherland.
N'kia glances back and the hunters are gone. Whe she turns
back around she almost runs into a double-barrel shotgun; she
screeches to a halt!
NATHAN JR.
Gotcha! Nowhere for you to go now.
N'kia scurries back the other direction, but then sees Jimbo;
she's paralyzed in fear.
YOUNG N'KIA
Baba!
NATHAN JR.
Jimbo is that who I think it is?
MONTAVIOUS
(African accent)
N'kia quick, get behind me!
MONTAVIOUS (CONT'D)
You're hurt.
Jimbo shuffles through a pouch that hangs form his belt. His
attention is distracted from the coming danger.
Nathan Jr. aims the rifle but Jimbo is in the way. Montavious
tosses the little guy like a limp dish rag.
BLAM!
YOUNG N'KIA
No, Baba!
NATHAN JR.
He's gonna make a fine trophy and
you're gonna make nice snack.
NATHAN JR.
Help, don't let me fall!
N'Kia comes over by her father. She looks over the edge and
gasps.
YOUNG N'KIA
(whispers)
Oh no.
MONTAVIOUS
It is nothing. We must get you home
and take care of that leg.
YOUNG N'KIA
Baba look, the human is getting
away!
The two come out the other side of a place that's like the
Garden of Eden; except for animals. A bear plays frisbee with
rabbit, a few deer jump rope, and other forest animals play a
game of baseball. They all wave and speak but Montavious
shoots by them; he's on a mission.
A thin and grumpy type man in his forties, NATE "THE GREAT"
CALLAHAN sits at the kitchen table drinking his coffee and
reads the paper; he seems unconcerned until --
MAMA CALLAHAN
My Lord, is that Jimbo running like
a bat out of Hell? And where is
Junior?
THE GREAT
You know Jimbo, jus' like a old
stray dog, WAIT -- he's by
himself?!
Nathan senior steps out the front door smirking with his cup
of coffee. Seconds later, Jimbo comes crashing on the porch;
he's exhausted.
THE GREAT
I take it Junior needs bringing his
prize back. Gon' round back and
fetch the truck.
6.
JIMBO
J - J - Junior is d - d --
THE GREAT
-- Spit it out boy and quit your
stammering!
FEMALE DEER
(African accent)
Montavious?!
YOUNG N'KIA
It was the two-leggers mama.
FEMALE DEER
N'kia go get Ms. Pearl!
7.
The young doe dashes through the forest, even though she has
a wound.
YOUNG KASIM
(African accent)
I think, but I've never seen her
run that fast. Sister, what's...
(pause)
... up?
YOUNG RASHAD
Look like she's headed to Ms.
Pearl's. Want to see what she is
doing?
YOUNG KASIM
Nah, I am not tyring to hear no
life lessons from Ms. Pearl. I'll
see her when she gets home. Let's
go.
YOUNG N'KIA
Ms. Pearl! Ms. Pearl! You down
there!? We need your help!
(pause)
Ms. Pearl!
N'kia only hears the echo of her own voice. Sadness takes
root and she begins to walk away.
MS. PEARL
(New Orleans accent)
N'kia, that you? Why all the fuss
babe? Ms. Pearl tryin' to take a
nap.
YOUNG N'KIA
It's Baba! You have to come
quickly!
N'kia bends down and Ms. Pearl climbs aboard; they shoot off
back down the path.
Kasim and Rashad enter the area of the big shade tree and see
a small gathering.
YOUNG RASHAD
Looks like Tyrone is doing another
show. The Northerners love
attention.
YOUNG KASIM
BABA?
(to Mama)
What happened? Who done this?
MONTAVIOUS (O.S.)
(weak voice)
My son.
9.
YOUNG KASIM
Who done this Baba? They must pay!
MONTAVIOUS
It's ok. I have dealt with the
matter. You and your sister are my
great joy.
YOUNG KASIM
Baba, wake up!
MONTAVIOUS
Huh? Kasim, promise me...
YOUNG KASIM
Anything Baba.
MONTAVIOUS
... Promise me that you will take
care of your mother and sister...
YOUNG KASIM
Yes Baba. It is done.
MONTAVIOUS
... And promise me that you will
not seek revenge. You can not let
it get inside. It is a deadly
poison.
Kasim turns to see his sister come, but looks back at his
father who's now lifeless.
YOUNG KASIM
Baba? BABA?
YOUNG N'KIA
Oh no, we're too late.
MS. PEARL
The value of life is never seen
when the eyes are only used.
YOUNG KASIM
THAT'S IT?! WE'RE JUST GOING TO LET
THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS --
(pause)
-- and listen to strange sayings?
Kasim looks at Ms. Pearl, shakes his head and walks toward
the Green wall.
FEMALE DEER
Kasim, where are going? Kasim?!
YOUNG RASHAD
It's ok, he will listen to me.
YOUNG RASHAD
Where are you going?
YOUNG KASIM
To the big house, I know one of
those humans done this!
YOUNG RASHAD
Then what? Kasim, your father just
died because of them. Do you wanna
die too?
YOUNG KASIM
We have to do something. Every time
they show up, one of our kind dies.
This time it was Baba, next time,
who will it be?!
YOUNG RASHAD
I understand but that's just the
way that it is. We have to always
be watchful.
11.
YOUNG KASIM
What do you mean, that's just the
way that is?! Are you satisfied
with those beast hunting us down
and taking our lives?!
YOUNG RASHAD
Of course not, do not be foolish.
But what can we do? Look at us,
we're too small and we don't have
any weapons.
YOUNG KASIM
You may be right. My size is a
hindrance right now. But it will
not always be this way.
(pause)
Then the tables will turn.
MAMA CALLAHAN
(whispers)
Shh, I know Paul it's okay, I'm
gonna miss him too.
THE GREAT
OKAY? What's wrong with you woman?
On the count of that deer, that boy
ain't gonna never see his pops
again!
12.
MAMA CALLAHAN
(whispers)
I'm sorry Nate, but what do you
want me to say to the boy?
Mama Callahan pops open her umbrella and walks toward the
house in the distance.
The service has ended and people peel away one by one.
THE GREAT
(mumbles)
This is not the way it's suppose to
be. You suppose to be burying me.
That damn deer is gonna pay.
(pause)
Rest ah sure Junior, he's gonna
pay.
FIFTEEN YEARS
LATER:
POW!
TYRONE
(New York accent)
Miss me chunky butt!
JIMBO
G-G-Get away from here! P-P-Pesky
varmint.
The back door swings open and PAUL CALLAHAN, who's around
eighteen, smiles bight in the doorway.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Coon problems again?
JIMBO
Almost g-g-got'em this time.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Sure you did. Just like that time
before that. And the time before
that, AND the time before that.
Jimbo puts his pistol back in it's holster and ignores Paul;
he's not in the mood for humor.
Paul picks up a tin can from the scattered trash and tosses
it in the air --
JIMBO
Show off.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Nope, that's countless hours of
training from the best --
TOGETHER
-- Nate The Great Callahan.
14.
PAUL CALLAHAN
C'mon on let's go get something to
eat.
RASHAD
You won't be content until you're
full of holes. Stay of the humans
property.
TYRONE
And go hungry? Yeah right. A
brother got to feed his family, by
any means necessary.
RASHAD
There's plenty of food in the
forest! But I forgot, you don't
want to work for it.
TYRONE
Yeah whatever. Those rich people
won't miss these scraps.
TYRONE (CONT'D)
And quit being such a scary cat and
grow a pair, why don't ya.
TROOP
DADDY! DADDY! What you get this
time?!
TYRONE
Junior, don't be such a pig! Geesh.
CECIL
Morning Tyrone... Mrs. Tyrone...
Kids --
CECIL (CONT'D)
-- looks like their doing just
fine.
CECIL
(nervously)
KASIM? I didn't expect to see this
early.
Kasim has a stony glare.
KASIM
Cecil, what is the status of my
weapon?
CECIL
Oh yeah, it's almost done but --
CECIL (CONT'D)
-- Tyrone asks about his grabber
two-thousand and Ms. Pearl wanted
prune extractor.
(pause)
You know her bowl movements aren't
like they used to be.
Cecil winks.
KASIM
LISTEN, you poor excuse for a
mammal. Not only have you not
delivered on your promise, but your
procrastination has led more HUMANS
to move into Graceland.
CECIL
Let me see where I have you on the
list --
KASIM
-- Maybe I didn't make myself
clear.
(pause)
You will have what I asked for THIS
WEEKEND.
CECIL
YES, IT WILL BE DONE QUICK, FAST,
AND IN A HURRY!
Rashad enters the building.
RASHAD
Cecil, are you ok?
CECIL
Huh? Oh Rashad, it's just you.
RASHAD
It is good to see you too. Hey do
you think you can build me a tool
that would make me disappear, then
reappear?
(pause)
I can't seem to beat N'kia at her
little game.
CECIL
Can't, I got to get started on
Kasim's weapon, ASAP.
RASHAD
Kasim?
CECIL
Yeah, you just missed him.
RASHAD
WAIT A MINUTE, did you say weapon?
For what?
CECIL
Something to get rid of the human
population for good. Particularly
the Callahan's.
RASHAD
WHAT? You can't do that. The
Callahans are good humans... Well,
Paul is.
CECIL
Maybe he is, maybe he isn't, all I
know is, Kasim is NOT taking no for
an answer on this project.
(pause)
It has to be done by Saturday.
RASHAD
Why Saturday?
CECIL
The Big Deer games will be held
here this year. So if you would
excuse me, I'm not trying to get on
Kasim's bad side.
18.
CECIL (CONT'D)
(looks in space)
Come to think about it, I don't
think Kasim has another side.
RASHAD
You can't finish that weapon. The
power of life and death is not
ours.
CECIL
Whatever Rashad, all I know is
Kasim is head deer around here and
I have a job to do.
(pause)
Besides, why you care what happens
to the humans, unless you're
friends with them.
CECIL (CONT'D)
WAIT A MINUTE. YOU'RE FRIENDS WITH
THE HUMANS?!
CECIL (CONT'D)
Do you know what will happen to you
if Kasim finds out?! Awe man, this
can't be happening! Kasim is going
kill you.
(pause)
NO WAIT. He's going kill us,
because I knew about it!
Rashad slap Cecil across the face!
CECIL (CONT'D)
(holds cheek)
Ouch! What you do that for?
RASHAD
Sorry, but I need you to focus. I
know it's not ours ways to befriend
the humans, but Paul is different.
CECIL
What makes you so sure?
19.
RASHAD
Well --
YOUNG PAUL
Whoa! Paw that was fantastic!
THE GREAT
Ok Junior, your turn. Hold it like
just like taught ya.
The arrow rockets away -- it breaks hard right and goes into
a thick green wall of bushes. Nathan Senior snatches him up
by the arm.
Nathan Senior watches the boy and shakes his head. He walks
back toward an old truck in the distance.
YOUNG PAUL
(mumbles)
Hold the arrow, shoot the arrow, go
get the arrow. Nothings ever good
enough for you.
Paul sees the arrow and reaches down, but through a crack in
the shrubbery he sees a buck wandering. His heart flutters.
The deer sniffs the air and comes over to the bushes. Paul
reaches for something on his side -- the deer is now staring
into his eyes.
YOUNG RASHAD
(African accent)
Rashad.
YOUNG PAUL
WHOA YOU CAN TALK?
YOUNG RASHAD
Yeah, what's your name?
YOUNG PAUL
Uh... Paul. I don't get it. You can
understand me? But how?
(pause)
I must be dreaming.
YOUNG RASHAD
You're not dreaming. You mean to
tell me that you're the only one
that can understand us?
YOUNG PAUL
I think so.
YOUNG RASHAD
That's weird. We all can understand
your kind.
YOUNG PAUL
You mean all the animals can speak?
Rashad nods.
YOUNG RASHAD
Hey my friend Tyrone told me that
you guys have a cave where you have
a bunch of heads on a wall.
(pause)
Is that true?
YOUNG PAUL
Uh... No.
YOUNG RASHAD
I knew he was a liar! Those coons
from the city are full of it! I
like you Paul. You're like the
others.
YOUNG PAUL
I like you too --
BANG!
THE GREAT
Out the way Junior!
22.
Nathan senior fires again but Paul leaps in warms way. Rashad
uses the opportunity to dart off into the woods.
YOUNG PAUL
My name is PAUL.
THE GREAT
(confused)
What? That's what I called you.
Nathan senior disregards the young boy's words and shoves him
towards the truck.
RASHAD
Now you see why you can't finish
that weapon?
CECIL
Uh... Yeah, that's cool story but
Kasim is not gonna be concerned
with granola.
RASHAD
Ok, Ok, just give me a little time
to talk to Kasim to see if I can
change mind.
CECIL
Good luck with that.
TYRONE
Yo Rashad, come check out the trick
I taught Junior!
RASHAD
I can't, got to find Kasim! You
seen him?!
TYRONE
Nah, check Warrior's field!
TYRONE (CONT'D)
Ok Junior, this time try to steal
the orange.
JUNIOR COON
Awe dad, do have to? I'm tired of
stealing fruit
TYRONE
Yes, you gotta perfect your craft.
Again, c'mon.
JUNIOR COON
Cab we at least do it with the
moldy hotdog you found?
MS. PEARL
(to N'kia)
... Sometimes forgiveness is the
hardest thing to give. But if we do
it, it sets us free.
N'KIA
But what about when something is
taken so dear to you? I want to
believe, but it's so hard.
Ms. Pearl caresses N'kia, pulls the vision down and puts it
inside of N'kia's heart.
MS. PEARL
If you keep it here babe, no one
can ever take it from you.
(pause)
But hate and love can't live there
at the same time.
N'KIA
That's why I like here Ms. Pearl.
You always have the answers.
Rashad sees Kasim training with three well built bucks. They
are having trouble keeping up.
KASIM
Is that your best attack?
DEER #1
Kasim we are done. We need a break.
25.
KASIM
A BREAK? It is a guarantee the
hunters will not take pity on you.
How do you expect to make them
pay?!
DEER #1
Uh... I just showed up for a few
lessons from the champ. What about
you guys?
The Deer looks at the other two deer for approval; they nod
in approval.
KASIM
What?! You imbeciles! This a waste
of time! Get out of my sight!
KASIM (CONT'D)
You may not understand now, but we
are being hunted like mere beast.
We must defend ourselves by any
means --
RASHAD
-- Kasim do you got a sec..?
Rashad gulps.
KASIM
RASHAD? What are you doing here
announced? I almost ended your
life.
RASHAD
Sorry, I didn't to frighten you.
26.
KASIM
You? Frighten me? Don't be
ridulous.
RASHAD
It's been awhile since we talked. I
was hoping we could catch up.
KASIM
Sorry, but you caught me at a bad
time old friend.
RASHAD
Yeah I see. Hey, I stopped by
Cecil's today.
KASIM
Oh that bumbling idiot.
RASHAD
He mentioned some kind of weapon he
was building for you to destroy the
Callahans.
KASIM
That is correct.
RASHAD
But Paul is one of the good guys. I
figured you forgot we used --
KASIM
-- Maybe you have forgotten what
those HUMANS took from me, but I
haven't.
(pause)
I vowed the day I watched my
father's eyes close, that I would
make them pay for their sins.
RASHAD
I remember. I was there. But it
wasn't Paul. He shouldn't have to
pay for what his father did.
27.
RASHAD (CONT'D)
Kasim? Kasim, did you hear what I
said?
RASHAD (CONT'D)
Kasim --
KASIM
-- WILL YOU STOP IT!
KASIM (CONT'D)
You must leave this place. It is
clear whose side you are on.
KASIM (CONT'D)
(still looks away)
RASHAD... The next time our paths
cross, be prepared. You are like
one of them to me now.
PAUL CALLAHAN
That's smell good. Reminds me of
those summer mornings as a kid.
THE GREAT
I remember you couldn't sit still
for two seconds. Couldn't catch
nothing on the count of you making
so mush racket.
PAUL CALLAHAN
What you expect a kid to do.
Sitting in ONE spot all day was
absolute torture.
THE GREAT
I understand. Listen, I wanted to
away, so we can discuss some
important business.
PAUL CALLAHAN
-- C'mon Paw, don't talk like that.
THE GREAT
Jsut hear me out. It would really
do my heart some good if you enter
the Big Deer games for Paw.
PAUL CALLAHAN
REALLY? Do we have to talk about
this today? And here I was thinking
you wanted to spend some time with
me.
THE GREAT
SON, it's a must that you enter
that contest, and WIN.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Why is that Paw?
29.
THE GREAT
The Callahan name is depends on it.
PAUL CALLAHAN
I'm not interested in harming those
animals and I'm not interested in
living in pride.
THE GREAT
Damn it boy! You're gonna get in
that contest and you're gonna pay
back that deer that took your daddy
from us.
PAUL CALLAHAN
I AM NOT SEVEN ANYMORE.
Nathan senior gets the picture; the air in chest goes out. He
looks away.
THE GREAT
The farm needs. We are in the hole
several thousand.
PAUL CALLAHAN
How long do we have?
Nathan senior looks at the water and slowly reels his line
back in.
THE GREAT
Maybe a few days.
Paul exhales.
PAUL CALLAHAN
(mumbles)
I'll do it.
Nathan senior smirks but Paul can't see it. He then composes
himself.
30.
THE GREAT
Thanks son.
(pause)
OH, I ALMOST FORGOT.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Whoa! It's dad winning medal!
PAUL CALLAHAN
I don't know what to say.
THE GREAT
Say you'll be champ.
PAUL CALLAHAN
I will. I will Paw.
TYRONE
Yo Cecil! Where you at?!
TYRONE (CONT'D)
Cecil! You here?!
31.
CECIL (O.S.)
Over here Tyrone!
TYRONE
Hey, did you get a chance to finish
what I asked you for?
CECIL (O.S.)
Yeah, it's over by the blueprint
table.
TYRONE
Dang it! You ever thought about
cleaning up around here?
CECIL (O.S.)
Yeah, but I hadn't had time since
Kasim wants this weapon.
TYRONE
Weapon for what?
CECIL (O.S.)
He's going to rid Alkebulan of the
humans for good. Especially the
Callahans.
TYRONE
Did you say get rid of the
Callahans?
CECIL (O.S.)
Yeah he says it's the big pay back.
He'll be....
TYRONE
(mumbles)
Once the Callahan's are out of the
way, nothing won't stop me from
achieving paradise.
32.
Tyrone runs through tons of garbage and food with his family.
He sees Junior swimming in a pool of garbage, and chewing as
he goes.
CECIL (O.S.)
-- Did you find it..?
TYRONE
What's that -- Oh yeah, sure.
(pause)
Where did you say Kasim was headed
to?
CECIL (O.S.)
Don't know, but you know Kasim. You
don't find him, he finds you.
CECIL (CONT'D)
He's like the wind, one minute
here's and the next he's not.
TYRONE
Uh... yeah. Guess I'll be moseying.
(pause)
Holla at ya later.
Two young male bucks antlers are intertwined. They push and
pull for supremacy but we also hear laughter from them.
YOUNG KASIM
(grunts)
Come on Rashad, apply yourself.
33.
YOUNG RASHAD
(grunts)
What do you think I'm doing!
YOUNG KASIM
Always expect the unexpected. The
humans are crafty.
YOUNG RASHAD
You are taking this entirely too
seriously.
YOUNG KASIM
I'm preparing.
YOUNG RASHAD
You're always preparing.
YOUNG KASIM
Because I know what's coming.
(pause)
Come on, I must get home before
Baba arrives.
RASHAD
He's been ready for this.
N'KIA (O.S.)
Ready for what?
RASHAD
Things about to get really bad.
Kasim is preparing for a war with
Paul. He even has Cecil making some
kind of special weapon.
34.
N'KIA
Oh no, we must tell Ms. Pearl.
She'll know what to do.
Tyrone creeps into a dark and wet cave. His eyes dart back
and forth with every step.
TYRONE
(whispers)
Kasim... Buddy... Pal, you in home?
TYRONE (CONT'D)
Whoa! Hey, I'm warning you. I know
seven styles of kung-fu.
KASIM
BOO!
Tyrone bolts across the room and crashes into a wall, which
loosens a big rock that is about to crush him -- suddenly, it
shatters into dust from Kasim's hind legs.
TYRONE
(trembles)
Thanks Buddy.
KASIM
Tyrone, what do I owe the pleasure
of your presence.
TYRONE
(nervous laugh)
Funny you should ask.
35.
TYRONE (CONT'D)
I stopped by Cecil's and he
mentioned you were getting rid of
the Callahans.
(pause)
And I thought you could use my
help.
Kasim smirks.
KASIM
ME? USE YOUR HELP?
TYRONE (O.S.)
I know where they keep the special
bullets!
TYRONE (CONT'D)
Oh, we're not laughing so hard
anymore now are we? Ready to talk
business?
KASIM
Speak.
TYRONE
Well I was thinking after the
Callahans are gone, all that
wonderful garbage will be ours for
the taking.
Kasim rushes the small coon and backs him into a corner.
KASIM
I could care less about excessive
need for rotten food. In fact, it's
repulsive! The only reason I've let
you stay in my presence this long
is because of your information.
(pause)
And if that is not shared quickly,
the Motherland will be absent of
ONE TINY RODENT.
Tyrone gulps!
TYRONE
Why didn't you just say that at
first --
(MORE)
36.
TYRONE (CONT'D)
(pause)
-- Could you put me down?
TYRONE (CONT'D)
They keep all their special weapons
and ammo in a big safe in the
cellar. I happen to know the
combination to lock.
(pause)
I could go get them tonight for you
if you like.
KASIM
Well, well, well. The little weasel
may get to keep his life after all.
TYRONE
Uh, thanks.
KASIM
Bring those bullets back to me and
you may get your... GARBAGE.
TYRONE
Kasim in my line of work you can't
be afraid to get your hands a
little dirty.
(pause)
Let's say we meet back here 'round
midnight...?
Tyrone looks back for Kasim but doesn't see him. He walks to
the exit.
TYRONE (CONT'D)
I'll take that as a yes. What a
douce
N'kia and Rashad arrive at Ms. Pearls place and see her
rocking in tiny swing.
37.
N'KIA
Ms. Pearl!
MS. PEARL
N'kia, back so soon? And look, you
brought Rashad, what a pleasent
surprise.
N'KIA
We need your help! It's Kasim.
MS. PEARL
My goodness. I haven't seen him in
ages. How is he?
N'KIA
Tell her Rashad.
RASHAD
He's planning to kill Paul.
Ms. Pearl clutches a set of pearls around her neck and gasps
for air.
MS. PEARL
The rage in the poor soul has
overtaken him. Vengeance is never
full till it's consumed it's
carrier.
RASHAD
Cecil is building him a special
weapon.
N'KIA
I've told him so many times Paul
had nothing to do with Baba's death
but he won't listen. What are we
going to do?
MS. PEARL
There is nothing we can do. If
someone's heart is bent, no amount
of truth will be able to straighten
it.
RASHAD
I'll tell him in the morning.
JIMBO (O.S.)
GOTCHA!
JIMBO (CONT'D)
End of the road for you p-p-pesky v-
v-varmint.
(pause)
PAUL! PAUL, I G-G-GOT'EM!
PAUL CALLAHAN
Well I'll be darn, looks like you
finally got'em.
JIMBO
I told ya, I would. He was p-p-
pretty slick but I --
39.
JIMBO (CONT'D)
(whispers)
Montavious.
PAUL CALLAHAN
No it's Kasim.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Jimbo get out of the way!
BANG!
Kasim sees the bullet, dips his horns, and it bounces away.
He disappears into the black night.
JIMBO
Y-Y-Yeah. That wasn't Montavious?
PAUL CALLAHAN
That's his son Kasim.
JIMBO
He's BIG. G-G-Gonna big prize.
40.
PAUL CALLAHAN
C'mon in the house. We gotta get
some rest.
CECIL
This may be my best work ever.
CECIL (CONT'D)
I got to fix that AC.
CECIL (CONT'D)
KASIM? How did you -- I mean where--
KASIM
-- Is it finished?
KASIM
-- But you said you JUST finished.
HOW do you know it can perform?
KASIM
This better be good.
Cecil winks and suddenly the garage door creeps open and we
see red gleaming eyes peer from the dark room.
ROBOT
What is your wish master?
CECIL
What do you think?
KASIM
You make me a talking trash can and
expect me to be impressed?
CECIL
Can trash can do this?
Cecil touches the keypad and the Robot vanishes from their
sight.
KASIM
Now this is what I am talking
about! Where is it now?
KASIM (CONT'D)
AHH! See what you made me do you
bumbling fool!
(pause)
42.
KASIM (CONT'D)
Pick up this mess, and have it
ready for the Games!
CECIL
Sorry, sorry, It'll be ready. Where
do you want me to meet you?
Paul, his wife, BRENDA CALLAHAN, his son, and Jimbo are
sitting at the table eating breakfast.
BRENDA
What's wrong hun? You've hardly
touched your plate.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Nothing. Just thinking about the
contest.
BRENDA
Don't worry, you're going to do
great.
(pause)
I can make you something else if
you like.
PAUL CALLAHAN
That's ok, I appreciate it. This is
fine. Besides, if I don't finish
Jimbo will help me out.
JIMBO
What? I g-g-get hungry on c-c-comp--
PAUL CALLAHAN
-- Competition day?
JIMBO
Yeah.
43.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Yes sir, I'll be right up!
(to family)
Will you all excuse me.
Paul slides back from the table, kisses his son on the
forehead, and exits the room.
N'KIA
... I don't understand how he
turned os evil.
RASHAD
Don't say that, he's not evil. He
just doesn't know what to do with
the hurt.
(pause)
I believe there's still some good
in there somewhere.
N'kia smiles.
N'KIA
That is why I love you.
N'KIA (CONT'D)
I mean LIKE. That's why I like you.
N'KIA (CONT'D)
Hey Rashad remember when we used
play with Paul as children.
Rashad laughs.
44.
RASHAD
How can I forget. It is because of
him we could not finish an entire
game.
YOUNG PAUL
... Eighty, Ninety... ONE-HUNDRED!
Ready or not, here I come!
Paul steps away form the tree and surveys the area; Nothing.
Rashad...?
Rashad and N'kia are behind a big tree. They see him and
snicker.
YOUNG N'KIA
(whispers)
Awe no Rashad, he's crying. We got
to do something.
YOUNG RASHAD
(whispers)
Yeah you are right.
Paul wipes his eyes and in the distance he sees Rashad and
N'kia coming his way.
YOUNG PAUL
GUYS! YOU'RE STILL HERE! I thought
you guys left me.
(pause)
45.
YOUNG N'KIA
Awe Paul we'll never leave you.
YOUNG PAUL
I love you guys.
YOUNG RASHAD
You're our friend Paul. We love you
too.
N'KIA
I wish Kasim could have known Paul
like we did.
RASHAD
Yeah, he is a good one.
RASHAD (CONT'D)
You have a big heart. That is why I
love you.
The two deer lock eyes and engage in a small kiss. N'Kia
blushes.
N'KIA
We better hurry.
RASHAD
Uh yeah, let's go.
They smile uncomfortably and dash off toward the house.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Morning Paw-Paw, what's up?
THE GREAT
Today is the big day! Time to show
those rookies what the name
CALLAHAN name is all about.
PAUL CALLAHAN
I'm gonna do my best and have a
little fun.
THE GREAT
FUN?! What are you five? Today is
not about FUN.
Paul walks over and helps his grandfather tie the tie.
Paul finished the tie and started to walk away but Nathan
senior grabs him. He rests both hands on his grandson's
shoulders.
PAUL CALLAHAN
(whispers)
Yes sir.
THE GREAT
(firm)
Louder boy.
PAUL CALLAHAN
YES SIR.
THE GREAT
Now that's the spirit. We better
get a move on. Reach over and pass
me my cane.
The two men descend down the stairs but Paul glances out the
window and sees the old wooden sign pointed north.
THE GREAT
Hurry up and handle your business
boy. We got to get a move on!
48.
Paul exits the back door looking from left to right. He heads
to the wooden sign that's next to a small shed.
He whispers nervously.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Guys...
The two deer emerge from the dense woods behind the shed.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Me? But I was just a kid when that
happened.
RASHAD
He doesn't care. He even had Cecil
make him a special weapon. You
can't go out there or you will--
(pause)
-- well you know.
PAUL CALLAHAN
So that's why that coon was
snooping around here last night.
The deer stare at each other.
BOTH DEER
TYRONE!
PAUL CALLAHAN
This is just great. It's too late
to back out now. There's too much
at stake.
49.
RASHAD
Try to do what you can Paul. We'll
go talk to Tyrone and see why he
was here --
PAUL CALLAHAN
PAW-PAW?!
THE GREAT
Who you out here talking to boy?
PAUL CALLAHAN
Huh? Ah... Nobody.
THE GREAT
You sure were having a good
conversation with NOBODY.
(pause)
Better put your things in the
truck.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Yes sir.
Paul walks away but Nathan senior stares out at woods sipping
his coffee.
THE GREAT
NOBODY huh. Well I sure nobody is
prepared.
TYRONE
Really appreciate what you done for
me last night. I was thinking, why
stop at the Callahans?
TYRONE (CONT'D)
It's gotta be endless amounts of
garbage out there just waitin' for
us.
(pause)
Trust me, being from the Big Apple,
there's enough there to last a few
years.
KASIM
Do not get this alliance confused,
when I rid Alkebulan of the humans,
you can have what is left.
Kasim walks away, not even looking at the coon.
TYRONE
I'll take it. At least he's honest.
Nathan senior and his family walk down the aisle of a row of
seats.
Two HUNTERS see him and are excited. They hurry over to him.
HUNTER #1
Nate the Great!
Nathan senior pauses to let the hunters approach him.
HUNTER #1 (CONT'D)
Mr. Callahan do you mind if I take
a picture with you?
The hunter gives his phone to the other hunter and stands
proudly next to Nathan senior.
51.
CLICK, CLICK.
HUNTER #1
Thank you very much Mr. Callahan.
You don't know what this means to
me.
THE GREAT
Sure I do. Well at least I know I'd
feel standing next to someone like
me.
HUNTER #1
(mumbles)
What a jackass. Can't believe I
wanted a picture with that guy.
THE GREAT
You that Junior? When you're a
winner, people never forget you.
(pause)
LOOK, there's our seats.
Nathan senior and his family head to the front row, where a
set of reserved row is prepared.
ANNOUNCER
Morning ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to the annual Big Deer
Games!
(pause)
We'd like to thank this year's
sponsor Black Arrow Enterprises.
52.
The announcer looks to the front row and a group of men all
dressed in solid black gear with a silver arrow signature on
their backs.
ANNOUNCER (CONT'D)
This year we have hunters from all
over the Mid-West and the United
States.
(pause)
But I would like to bring up a
legend. A man that needs no
introduction... NATE THE GREAT
CALLAHAN! Give him a hand as he
comes.
JIMBO
Come on b-b-boss. I'll help.
Nathan senior cuts his eye at him and grits his teeth.
THE GREAT
Get your measly hands off me. I
don't want your help.
Nathan senior makes his way up the stairs and approaches the
podium. He waves again.
KASIM
Brothers, the day has finally come!
We have prepared for this since the
time of our existence.
(pause)
Year after year we have been the
prizes of mindless beast! But no
more, that ends today!
(pause)
Today they become the hunted!
KASIM (CONT'D)
Today the become the prey! The
season of humanity has ended! From
this day forward it our season...
DEER'S SEASON!
CUT TO:
Ms. Pearl observes Kasim and the rest of his army marching
from Warrior's field.
MS. PEARL
Kasim! Do you have a second babe?!
KASIM (CONT'D)
Could you make your speech fast. I
have task to accomplish.
54.
MS. PEARL
I still remember the days of youth
watching your father showing you
how to sniff the air for fresh
berries.
(pause)
I understand that you miss him, we
all do. The Motherland lost a true
hero.
KASIM
UNDERSTAND? No you cannot possibly
understand my struggle! My life
instantly altered because of those
hillbillies! My mother was forced
to raise us alone!
(pause)
Today, they will give an account
for their sins and the sins of
their forefathers.
(pause)
So no, you cannot UNDERSTAND my
plight.
MS. PEARL
THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE WRONG. I too
no how it feels to lose someone at
the hands of fools.
(pause)
Many moons ago I lost my husband to
the humans. He was simply used for
target practice. For years the pain
was tormented me, it was
unbearable.
(pause)
It was changing me. I had to let it
go. You must do the same before you
do something you may regret.
KASIM
Forgive me, I did not know.
(pause)
I wish there was another way.
MS. PEARL
There's always another path. When
they go low, we go high.
KASIM
Unfortunately for some, there is
only one path.
KASIM (CONT'D)
Mine is clear. I am sorry for your
loss.
Kasim sheds one tear and gallops away. He speeds pass N'kia
and Rashad.
N'KIA
Kasim!
N'KIA (CONT'D)
It was like he didn't know me.
RASHAD
Do not worry about it. Let us go
and see what Ms. Pearl told him.
ANNOUNCER
What a day! What a day! You guys
were amazing. The shooting times
were close, but I think we wilted
them down accurately.
PAUL CALLAHAN
(whispers)
Stop being rude.
ANNOUNCER
The winner of the overall shooting
competition was tough, but there
can only be ONE. And he is... DENNY
WALLACE!
THE GREAT
WHAT? What in the hell is wrong
with you people?! You don't have
eyes?!
(pause)
Junior skunked those rookies!
PAUL CALLAHAN
(whisper)
Paw-Paw please stop!
THE GREAT
I will do no such thing! They hate
us so bad, they willing to cheat!
PAUL CALLAHAN
I'm sorry everyone. He didn't get
that much sleep last night.
ANNOUNCER
Ok gentlemen...and lady, the part
you've all been waiting for... The
Big deer hunt!
THE GREAT
The won't be able to cheat on this
one!
ANNOUNCER
Everyone will have an hour to
prepare. So get you bite to eat and
we'll meet at the south of the
forest.
KASIM
Toady brothers we witness the dawn
of technological genius. Our very
own scientist, Cecil has invented a
weapon that will aide us in the
destruction of our age old problem.
DEER #1
Scientist? Could've fooled me. I
thought he was a shade-tree
mechanic.
KASIM
Feast your eyes on the future! With
this, the humans will not see what
is coming.
(to Cecil)
Show them it's capabilities.
DEER #1
Whoa! Where did it go?!
Cecil touches the controls again and the robot deer re-
appears behind Deer #1 -- He is alarmed and kicks it with
hind legs!
58.
DEER #1 (CONT'D)
HI-YA!
KASIM
Nice improvements. BROTHERS, it is
almost time! Let us take our places
and take back what is rightfully
ours!
RASHAD
Tyrone is the only that can help us
now.
N'KIA
Tyrone? He rather see us as
trophies before he helps us.
RASHAD
Doesn't hurt to try. Maybe I can
make him see the light.
ANNOUNCER
It is the moment you've all been
waiting for! This is the time to
shine! This win will seal the deal
for the crown
(pause)
Whoever brings back the biggest
deer will be the face of Black
Arrow!
PAUL CALLAHAN
THAT'S YOU BOY! GET OUT THERE AND
MAKE ME PROUD!
ANNOUNCER
Well get out there and get that
deer!
The hunters sprint into the forest and some drive side-by-
sides.
RASHAD
Junior were is your father?
JUNIOR COON
Who wants to know?
RASHAD
Listen you little brat. We do not
have time for your nonsense. Just
tell us where he is.
JUNIOR COON
I don't have to tell you nothing. I
know my rights.
RASHAD
Why you little --
N'KIA
-- JUNIOR, how has it been. It's
been some time since I seen you in
class.
JUNIOR COON
OH HI N'KIA. My dad told me school
is for losers. He said life teaxhes
you all you need to know.
60.
N'KIA
But I have missed you.
JUNIOR COON
You have?!
N'KIA
Absolutely. Did you know that you
may be the smartest student in my
class.
JUNIOR COON
Really? Well, I would come back but
lunch time isn't long enough, and
garbage isn't on the menu.
N'KIA
Tell you what, if you tell me where
your dad is, I'll be sure to let
Mr. Beaver know. How about that?
JUNIOR COON
YOU WILL?
N'kia nods.
N'KIA
Come on Rashad we haven't got much
time!
HUNTER #1
Okay little dumb deer, just stay
right there. This will be over
quickly.
HUNTER #2
What tha Hell?
HUNTER #2 (CONT'D)
I'm going crazy.
ROBOT (O.S.)
You're not crazy.
The titanium titan charges the stand and takes out one of the
legs -- it crashes to the ground.
HUNTER #2
My Lord, what are you?
ROBOT
Your worst NIGHTMARE!
62.
-- Paul and Jimbo walk side by side with their rifles. They
hear the faint scream and look at each other.
JIMBO
P-P-Paul you hear that?
PAUL CALLAHAN
Yeah, been hearing all morning.
Somethings going on out there. Keep
your eyes open little buddy.
N'KIA
Look at this place, we will never
find those bullets.
RASHAD
(whisper)
Shh, hopefully we will find Tyrone.
RASHAD (CONT'D)
LOOK, there they are.
N'KIA
Good! Let's get them and get out of
this place.
N'KIA (CONT'D)
How in the world are we going to
them?
RASHAD
I GOT IT. Stand on my back.
63.
N'KIA
(on tippy-toes)
Just a little closer...
N'KIA (CONT'D)
Got them!
N'KIA (CONT'D)
NO!
N'kia grabs the bars and peers out into the darkness. She
sees a small figure coming toward them.
TYRONE
Well, well, well, what do we have
here. A couple of DEER THIEVES.
Never could've imagine this.
RASHAD
TYRONE, you have to let us out! We
have to stop Kasim.
TYRONE
Now that's be gonna a little
problem. I'm being paid very well
to make that doesn't happen.
RASHAD
You can't just leave us here!
Innocent people are going to die.
TYRONE
INNOCENT? The Callahans are hardly
innocent. Come to think about it,
they're probably hunting you guys
down as we speak.
N'KIA
Paul isn't like that.
TYRONE
I wouldn't be so sure. The apple
doesn't fall from the tree.
64.
TYRONE (CONT'D)
(pause)
All this talk about apples got me
hungry.
HUNTER #3
Three hours and not ONE deer. i'm
never gonna win this --
(pause)
-- AHH!
PAUL CALLAHAN
Jimbo you hear that? Sounds like it
came from over there.
HUNTER #3
PAUL? BOY AM I GLAD TO SEE YOU! Can
you guys get me out of here?!
PAUL CALLAHAN
(points)
Jimbo go rustle up a few of those
vines. We can make a rope.
HUNTER #3
No what's really weird is when i
saw a couple of deer staring down
here when I fell in.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Wait a minute, deer? Can remember
what they looked like?
HUNTER #3
Ahh... They looked like DEER. What
kind of question is that. You know
they all look alike.
HUNTER #3 (CONT'D)
Wait a minute. One of'em was black
as coal and had fiery red eyes. I
could've swore I was seeing things
and then they were gone.
JIMBO (O.S.)
PAUL HELP!
PAUL CALLAHAN
I'll be right buddy. Hold tight.
HUNTER #3
Hurry!
Paul sprints through the woods. He sees Jimbo wrapped to a
tree. In front of him is Kasim.
PAUL CALLAHAN
You get away from him!
Kasim glares at Paul and smirks. He steps away and trots off
into the dense bush.
JIMBO
I d-d-don't know. I was gathering
the vines and a black flash came
and I was t-t-tied to a tree.
ROBOT
(grainy)
Paul Callahan.
PAUL CALLAHAN
What in the world.
RASHAD
I'm out of ideas.
N'KIA
Me too. We are never getting out of
here.
N'KIA (CONT'D)
Hold on Rashad, did you see that?
RASHAD
Yeah I wonder --
The piece of ground collapse and Ms. Pearl hops out the hole.
N'KIA
Ms. Pearl1 how did you find us?!
MS. PEARL
Hello babies. Ms. Pearl has her
ways.
(pause)
Let's get you two out of here.
67.
N'KIA
Tyrone put the controls on that
rock. Hurry before he comes --
TYRONE
-- What, come back?
TYRONE (CONT'D)
Looking for this? I have to say,
Avie you do have a strange way of
popping up where you're not wanted.
MS. PEARL
Tyrone, I know you're not used to
our ways, but you're gonna have to
respect your elders.
Tyrone scoffs.
TYRONE
My elders? Don't make me laugh.
Listen, you're not in any position
to be telling what I can and can't
do.
MS. PEARL
Tyrone, Ms. Pearl don't have time
to argue. You can either GIVE the
remote to me or Ms. Pearl can take
it.
TYRONE
TAKE IT? FROM ME? YOU? I'd like to
see that one.
TYRONE
Whoa! Pearl if you don't get me out
of here, you're gonna be sorry!
68.
MS. PEARL
Ms. Pearl tried to do this the nice
way but you had to be difficult.
Ms. Pearl zips over to the coon and spins in a circle. She
takes the remote in the blurry haze.
TYRONE
WHOA!
MS. PEARL
Thank you babe.
She rockets back to her spot and Tyrone falls to the ground.
N'KIA
Ms. Pearl, you got it!
Ms. Pearl flips a switch and the cage ascends back to the
ceiling.
N'KIA (CONT'D)
Thank you so much.
RASHAD
Yeah, thanks Ms. Pearl. That was
pretty cool.
MS. PEARL
You two are welcome but you don't
have time to spare. You all better
get hose bullets to Paul.
RASHAD
That's right. Come on N'kia.
TYRONE (O.S.)
Yo Ms. Pearl!
69.
MS. PEARL
Yeah babe...?
TYRONE
Could you get me out of here? I
can't see nothing.
MS. PEARL
You calling your elders now babe?
Ms. Pearl gotta run, I left some
vegetables cooking.
(pause)
Kasim should be back shortly.
TYRONE (O.S.)
Ms. Pearl? Ms. Pearl? MS. PEARL...
(pause)
... I'm afraid of the dark.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Now I know how it feels to be
hunted.
ROBOT
Come out. Come out, where ever you
are. You can run but you can not
hide.
(pause)
We will find you.
Paul takes cover back behind the tree. His eyes dart back and
forth.
PAUL CALLAHAN
(mumbles)
WE? Who is we?
CUT TO:
70.
KASIM
I like the voice you gave it.
CECIL
Oh yeah? You're really gonna like
this one --
Cecil clears his throat and speaks into mic next to the
monitor.
CECIL (CONT'D)
(heavy breathing)
Luke, I am your father.
PAUL CALLAHAN
What? If I can make it to Murphy's
Creek I might can lose this thing.
CUT TO:
CECIL
Do you want me to end him now?
Kasim grins.
KASIM
No, not yet. Let him suffer.
(pause)
May he feel what the ancestors felt
a little longer.
71.
PAUL CALLAHAN
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? DO WHAT
YOU CAME TO DO!
The robot plows the ground; steam comes out it's nostrils.
Paul looks out across the river down the steep embankment.
KASIM
Do it... NOW.
KASIM (CONT'D)
What?
N'kia is line to cut the path off between the robot and Paul.
N'KIA
Don't hurt him!
KASIM
STOP THE CHARGE!
Cecil repeatedly taps the keyboard. The keyboard fizzles.
CECIL
I CAN'T! IT WON'T RESPOND!
WHAM!
She opens her eyes and sees Kasim ramming the robot.
Kasim and the robot are in entwined and spin down the hill.
N'KIA
KASIM!
N'KIA (CONT'D)
Kasim.
She drops her head and sheds. The tear splashes on the
ground.
CUT TO:
SOUTHERN PREACHER
... Today Graceland has lost a true
hero...
PAUL CALLAHAN
Where do I begin? All ever known as
a father was my Paw-Paw. He taught
me everything I know. And I thank
him for that.
(pause)
However, there are some things I
wish he didn't teach me.
The assembly watches Paul walk up the hill to the Big House.
Rashad emerges from the tall wheat field and walks over to
him.
RASHAD
Good morning Paul.
PAUL CALLAHAN
Good to see you buddy.
RASHAD
Sorry to hear about your
grandfather. You ok?
PAUL CALLAHAN
I'm ok. How's N'kia? I never
imagined Kasim would've done that.
RASHAD
Me either. His lover ran deeper
than we thought.
PAUL CALLAHAN
If we would've ever stopped to
consider your kind, you and I
wouldn't be having this
conversation.
(pause)
I guess we needed this wake up
call.
RASHAD
I don't know what to say. Thank you
Paul.
PAUL CALLAHAN
No my friend, THANK YOU. Hate it
had to come to this.
Paul smiles.
Rashad chuckles.
75.
RASHAD
There is nothing wrong with that.
See around Paul.
THE END
