Extension rod

This material is made of pure stainless steel due to its medical nature, this allows for no corrosion
and making it safe for use items like wheelchairs.

Stainless steel is made from a mix of pure iron, nickel, chromium, molybdenum and carbon. To make
pure iron you must place the mined copper oxide into a blast furnace reduce its carbon content as
well as purify it, this is done via melting it with carbon and limestone, this allows the carbon to take
oxygen from the iron and air to become carbon dioxide while the limestone reacts with all the
elements other than iron to become slag which can be removed leaving just iron left over. Once this
process is done you then can melt the ratio of pure iron with the rest of the materials listed above to
make a form of stainless steel, depending on the properties wanted you can then remove carbon by
melting the steel in an oxygen rich furnace to remove the desired amount of oxygen. The reason the
stainless steel is wanted is due to its lack of oxidisation meaning no rust. This allows it to be sterile
and therefore safe for use near injuries and such.

One of the simplest methods to create a piece like this is to cast this shape from a mould, this is
possible due to the low complexity of the design. While casting can be expensive to set up due to the
cost of producing moulds than can last for a large amount of castings, however afterwards the cost is
much lower due to only needing to melt the steel and pure into shape needed. This design would
need to be check very frequently since there is a very small tolerance for parts such as these, this is
since they work by fitting into a gap with little free space in-between and then using friction and
bolts to hold the piece in place at desired height, for instance placing a head rest and the right for a
person of a certain height. This means that any deformations in the mould would make the pieces
made afterwards irrelevant and therefore waste metal, this should lead to a form of injection
moulding in where all sides are covered, while this will not stop the cast from degrading over time
like all casts it while avoid any difference that open casts would have in which the casts could be
over or under filled by accident.

The foot plate is a very simple component that does not require much in the way of tolerance, this is
due to its lack of use in any mechanical environment, the goal of a foot plate in the context of a
wheelchair (which this one is from) is to just to be an area in which your foot can be placed so the
users foot does not get either tired from holding it up or get it caught I the wheelchair due to how
long foots are. This means that all the plate needs to do is be large enough to support a wide range
of sizes since its more profitable to make a larger piece that suits all instead of custom sizes for
individual wheelchairs, this allows the manufacture to look for the quickest method of creating the
piece and not having to worrying about precision which normally increases the price of parts
significantly. The only pieces that may need consideration for a smaller tolerance is the countersunk
screw holes found at the top of the piece, these allow the plate to be attached to a wide variation of
different wheelchairs since different manufacturers cannot make the exact same one. Since screws
all have a standard size and cannot be custom made easily the holes need to be within close to the
size of whatever screw size chosen so there is no issue with installation. The reason countersunk
screw is used is because they are placed where the feet of the user will be, this means if normal
screws where used you would feel the bump of each screw with your feet, making long term use
uncomfortable, this allows the piece to be flush and smooth, creating no uncomfortable feeling.
One thing commonly placed on parts such as foot plates is a type of paint coating which gives the
finish of the material more grip, this is useful due it is allowing the pain of rain or any water not
making the use of the product difficult since grip will always be constant.
