CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

This section presents the context of the research being conducted. It includes the

background of the study, statement of the problem, conceptual framework, and research

paradigm.

Background of the study

Computer literacy is the knowledge and ability to use computer and

technology efficiently or a basic condition for technology learning environment. Computer

literacy correlates with computer ownership to use computer hardware and software tools

in educational and professional activities, ability to use applications rather than to

program, and number of computer-related courses taken. It can also be referred to as the

comfort level someone has by using computer programmers and other application that

are related to computers this definition is based on the works of Rober and Chalkina

(2016). According to Math Genie (2018) Computer literacy is a mandatory skill for success

in school, the job force, and everyday life. Furthermore, Jarvis and Pastuszak (2008)

stressed that computer literacy plays a vital role in students’ academic achievement and

they need to be computer competent and proficient to be able to operate efficiently in

academic contexts. Computer literacy has an important place as one of many forms of

“literacy”.

Computer literacy encompasses information technology which is the use of

computer and other related devices to capture, store, process data, produce information

and save time and communication technology, which is the use of devices such as mobile

phones, broadcasting in radio and television through satellites (Iroriteraye-Adjekpovu,

8

2012). The University Project. Net as cited by Essian (2008) posits that computer literacy

has been expanded to include skills in computer basic numeric sound, still and moving

images and graphical elements in digital based communication contrary to the past

notion of only confining it to reading and writing. The concept probes that computer

literacy is indispensable for both faculty members and learners in the conduct of flexible

learning instruction.

Technology is used widely in almost every industry the world globally

bringing out a sudden change in the lifestyle of everyone as part of globalization scheme

and in all sectors of the workforce to expedite work processes. These include

communication technology, office productivity, record keeping and retrieval, internet and

search, decentralized work and cloud computing, analytics and new decision structure,

automation, robotics and future factories; adoption of virtual and augmented reality;

conversational system i.e., chatbots and assistants; and lastly on information security

(Guha and Gates, 2018). Almost everyone of various ages, social status, background,

races, and places is engaged with the use of gadgets which are either work-related,

intended to expedite school requirements, or facilitate activities with the use of technology

as a result of the increased work load involved in coping with the information explosion.

This scenario is common everywhere.

Technology is how people modify the natural world to suit their own

purposes. From the Greek word “techne”, meaning art or artifice or craft, the act of making

or crafting, but more generally it refers to the diverse collection of processes and

knowledge that people use to extend human abilities to satisfy human needs and wants.

Some believe that technology is a very effective way of engaging young minds and
9

improving student learning (Carlson, 2005). Learners have simply grown accustomed to

acquiring information and communicating by utilizing technology-based methods (Moore,

2007). The use of technology has become more prevalent in schools and has been shown

to facilitate student learning objectives. In school, technology plays an important role in

the delivery of instruction especially during the onset of pandemic and its aftermath due

to the series of unexpected events. Smart television, computer units, laptops, cellphones,

tablets, and other related stuff are used to impart knowledge to students in all levels

ranging from primary, elementary, junior high, senior high, collegiate level, and post

graduate schools. Nowadays, with the emergence of social networks, the type of Internet

use for leisure by young people has undergone significant changes. Thus, according to

Karal and Kokoc (2013), Internet users have given preference to the use of social and

communicational networks, which, as sharing environments, offer opportunities in any

age group and at any level of schooling being currently the most popular online

communication method (Glusac et al., 2015).

As stated by Gulek and Demirtas (2005), there is substantial evidence that

incorporating technology, of any kind, in the classroom as an instructional tool enhances

student learning and educational outcomes. Microsoft PowerPoint was one of the

Microsoft Office applications developed by Microsoft since 1990 and has been used

widely for disseminating information and presenting reports. PowerPoints are normally

produced in slides to be projected on the screen or whiteboard for the audience to see.

However, the strengths of PowerPoint go beyond slide presentation. This study aims to

discuss the role of PowerPoint in the teaching and learning besides identifying its usage

in the development of a multimedia-based module. Interviews were conducted with four

10

respondents who have used the PowerPoint-based module learning material. The

respondents are students from Sultan Zainal Abidin University who enrolled in Arabic for

beginner course. Feedbacks from students are evaluated to determine whether or not the

PowerPoint-based module enhances their understanding in their learning. Despite its

presence, not all educators take advantage of the benefits offered by PowerPoint which

go beyond a static presentation to include elements of text, picture, graphic, animation

and audio. The findings from this study indicate that materials produced by PowerPoint

help enhance learner understanding. Therefore, its huge potentials can be explored

further to produce multimedia-based teaching and learning materials.

For young people or for students, Poynton (2004) has measured that

Computer literacy is positively associated with the scores obtained in practical measuring

skills tests. Selber (2004) claims to be essential to incorporate more opportunities to allow

students and teachers to recognize Computer literacy as a social practice and raising the

topic beyond the why and how to use technology.

Students’ ability to learning through the use of technology goes far beyond

the classroom, since they use it, they do the basic way, to support their study (Clark et

al., 2009). According to Kuhlemeier and Hemker (2007) and van Braak and Kavadias

(2005), students tend to use the computer and Internet at home, to a much greater degree

than in the classroom. The ICT skills are mainly acquired through “learning by doing” at

home, and less in the context of the classroom, through specific training. Another study

on ICT Literacy a balance and School Performance had looked into its impact and scope

of influence. Dotong, De Castro, Dolot, & Peneda (2019) discover that the use of the

internet to study through the use of search engines, the use of libraries and/or digital
11

databases and the completion of homework through the use of the internet, significantly

influenced school performance. It was also found out that ICT literacy significantly

influenced school performance in a direct way and mediated by the use of the internet to

support the said activity. Computer literacy showed a greater convergence, namely

through the use of software for multimedia presentations, word processing and spread

sheeting. Overall, ICT literacy of the student of basic teaching and secondary teaching

(7th to the 12th grades) has a predominant influence on school performance, being also

important is the stimulus of parents and teachers to use the internet as a tool to support

their studying task. As such, the expanse of influence and effect of computer literacy on

academic performance will be the focus of this current study. It will be determined and

analyzed if computer literacy has a significant effect on the students’ academic

performance like that of the recent study in order to probe if the observations of

researchers hold true to the students in Baguio City. In addition, Karsten & Roth (1998)

stated that although a wide variety of computer experiences enhance students’

perceptions of their computer competencies, only those experiences that develop or

enhance the specific computer skills defined in a particular context are likely to have an

impact on computer literacy levels and performance.

Mumtaz (2001) suggested that teachers, in order to improve the results of

education in ICT at school, should take into account the use of computers at home by

students. Cohen (2010) advances that computer literacy is imperative for every individual,

particularly the students. At present, it could have been impossible to conduct classes

without technology as online classes and/or flexible learning instructions are being carried

out as instructed by the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of

12

Education (DepEd). DepEd implements the DepEd Internet Connectivity Project pursuant

to DepEd Order Number 50, series of 2009, first among secondary schools and, later on,

extended to the elementary level in consonance with the DepEd Computerization

Program of DepEd Order No. 78, s. 2010. This explains why flexible learning instructions

were carried out in the country as mandated by the aforementioned laws. The current

educational set up affirms that computer literacy plays a crucial role in learning; thus

students, need to be computer literate to be able to cope with academic requirements

and get the most from learning situations. Students likewise need to exhibit computer

literacy in order to successfully complete research-related tasks, preparation of

PowerPoint presentations for visual effect, recording of video projects that entails skills in

computer literacy, and interaction online with mentors during the conduct of classroom

instructions. Along this observation, Esnara (2022) as cited by Rahmati et al. (2020) in

meta-analysis on educational technology in computer-assisted language learning (CALL)

found out that the approach yielded more positive outcomes than traditional methods.

This finding was further corroborated by Esnara (2022) as cited by Yanti & Rahmidayah

(2020), where the researchers integrated the results of 67 various investigations in Iran

from 2007 to 2020 on the impact of educational technology in ELT. The study was meta-

analysis quantitative or statistical, using statistical findings of each of the 67 research with

the aid of SPSS software to determine the frequency and statistical significance that

yielded a positive outcome. This only shows that computer-aided strategies work well with

the learners as the various faculties are put to play to the advantage of the learners. From

the aforementioned study, it supports the claim that educational technology paved well in
13

the learning process; thus, a look into computer literacy among students is an interesting

area of concern for a research-related study.

This study will benefit the school administrators and staff as it can be used

as a point of reference on how to design the school curriculum for an optimized classroom

interaction among the student body. This is likewise relevant to the teachers who are the

primary source of knowledge and who are directly responsible for the conduct of

classroom instruction for them to be aware of the impact of computer literacy with the new

classroom set-up in schools.

This could be an eye-opener for the students to improve and develop their

computer literacy because some of the students still don’t know basic skills and some are

still afraid and know nothing about it.

And lastly, this will also benefit the future researchers who might want to

expand and consider other areas that affect computer literacy and academic

performances of concerned students.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

Each provides a segment of understanding for learners and computer

literacy. Explaining each theory and how it connects to computer literacy that provides a

greater understanding of the benefits with student learners.

Computer Based Theory (Christopher Pappas,2014)-

The term computer based learning environments refers to a broad array of

uses of technology that are aligned with theories that support learning. Researchers who
14

design and evaluate come from multiple disciplines including, but not limited to,

education, psychology, and computer science. This study presents a theory of critical

components that impact the effectiveness of computer-based instruction for students. The

theory was developed to provide a framework for research to explain or predict effective

learning by students using a desktop computer.

Theory of Computation/computer (Michael Sipser,1997)-

The theory of computation is a branch of computer science and mathematics

combined that “deals with how efficiently problems can be solved on a model of

computation, using an algorithm”. It studies the general properties of computation which

in turn, helps us increase the efficiency at which computers solve problems. This is done

when we estimate the validity of the solutions given by the computer through the theory

of computation and then alternate the algorithms so that we can obtain a more reliable

solution. This is a fast-growing branch that has helped solving problems in many fields

beside computer science such as Physics, Economy, Biology and many others.

Mastery Learning Theory (Benjamin Bloom,1968)-

A Mastery Learning model, on the other hand, focuses on every student and

the journey toward growth, and ideally, mastery. It provides students with as much time

and intervention as needed, so each student is ready to move on to the next level. Studies

show that Mastery Learning closes the gap between aptitude levels by providing slower

students with enough time to learn, and faster students with enough enrichment that they

remain engaged with the material, so every student succeeds.

15

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method used in this study, the research

design, the respondents, data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure and the

treatment of data.

Research Design

This study employed the descriptive research design using questionnaire as the

main instrument. It described the attitude of the student respondents toward the use of

computers and elicited the extent of their computer literacy in terms of Microsoft word,

Microsoft excel, PowerPoint presentation which were compared for any significant

variations when paired according to their attitude toward the computer.

Population and Locale

The research was conducted at Data Center College of the Philippines-Baguio City

during the second semester of school year 2022-2023.

The total population of enrolled students in senior high school is 944 students. The

researchers computed for the sample using the slovin’s formula with .05 margin of error.

The sample had a total of 281 respondents. From the total number of sample 10% (24)

came from ICT 11 , 20% (43) from HUMSS 11 ,3% (17) in ABM 11 , 5%(23) in HE 11 and

10%(46) in STEM 11 . In grade 12 respondents 5%(18) came from ICT 12 , 5%(25) in

ABM 12, a total of 15% (33) in HUMSS 12 , 5%(22) in HE 12 , and 20% (30) in STEM 12.
17

The following formula was used to compute for the sample:

n=N/(1+Ne2)

Whereas:

n=number of samples N=total population e=error margin/margin of error

Data gathering tools

In order to gather proper data to this study, survey questionnaire was utilized. The

sample survey was composed of 3 separate parts. The first part is matrix question about

Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The second part is likert questions about the

challenges the respondents encounter on Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. While

the third part is a scale format, This part was used to determine how students overcome

the challenges they encounter using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Data gathering procedure

The researchers made a self-made questionnaire based from the statement of the

problem. When it was finalized , permission to conduct a study was sought from the

Senior High Coordinator of Data Center College of the Philippines Baguio.

Upon approval , data gathering tools were floated to the selected respondents. The

researchers made sure that all instructions were given clearly to ensure a smooth

transition of the procedure. The questionnaires were then gathered , and the data were

analyzed, interpreted and were subjected to the appropriate statistical tools.

18

Treatment of data

The researchers used percentage to determine the Impact of Computer Literacy

on Senior High School Students Academic Performance . In addition, the frequency of

the students’ answers was identified and analyzed.

The following formula for percentage was used,

% = f/n x 100%

Whereas : % = percentage n = total number of population F = frequency

The Figure shows that 98.67% majority of the students are familiar in Microsoft

Word compared to the 1.33% students who said that they don’t know or not familiar with

the application. Fry (2020) stated that Microsoft Word has been around for decades and

has become the de facto standard word processing software. Many people are already
19

familiar with its interface and features, making it easy to use. ( Jana 2018) One of the

essential applications that the student must have is the Microsoft Word, it is very important

because in our generation most of the school related things are digitally inclined. It allows

us to open and have access to read PDF, handouts, documents and other kind of files.

With Microsoft Word it makes our activities and lives as a student easier. We don’t need

to write on paper to make a letter or school work, we just need to type it and it is more

presentable and the professor can also benefit to it because they can easily understand

the writings.

Figure 2.2 Percentage of Students who are Familiar with Microsoft Excel

It presents that 92.89% ,a lot of students are already familiar in Microsoft Excel

application but the 7.11% students are not. Microsoft Excel enables users to format,

organize and calculate data in a spreadsheet. By organizing data using software like

Excel, data analysts and other users can make information easier to view as data is added

or changed. Excel contains a large number of boxes called cells that are ordered in rows

and columns.(Gills 2019).Excel is also helpful to accounting students to present their

worksheets or financial statements. ( Hudson 2003)

It appears that 94.67% of students are familiar in Microsoft PowerPoint than the

5.33% students that don’t know about the application. According to Heni A. Puspita in her

book having fun with Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, Microsoft PowerPoint is a Microsoft

Office program that is used to create or design a presentation to the public interest. With

Microsoft PowerPoint the user can create a lot of a topic of discussion that can be made

as beauty as possible and be designed to attract public attention. The PowerPoint

presentation; it is also convenient and beneficial for us to easily present our reports and

the lesson to be discussed( Ben, Hudson 2013).
