I am interested in this job because I am currently looking for an opportunity to use the skills I learnt in my
college. I have recently completed a 16-week part-time accounting course. The course covered book-
keeping, recording income and receipts; and basic costing. We used a wide range of computer packages, and
I picked up the accounting skills easily. I was able to work alone with very little extra help. I passed the course
with merit. I believe my success was due to my thorough work, my numeracy skills and my attention to detail.
During the course, I had experience of working to deadlines and working under pressure. Although this was
sometimes stressful, I always completed my work on time.
AS_2223_DecuongHKII_TiengAnh6
Unfortunately, the course did not include a work placement, so I have not practised my skills in a business
setting, and I am now looking for an opportunity to do so. I am particularly looking for a job in a small
company such as yours, as I believe I will be able to interact with a wider range of people, and as a result,
learn more skills. I would like to progress within a company and gain more responsibilities over the years.
Although I do not have work experience in finance, I have experience in working in an office environment.
Before starting the accounting course, I worked for 6 months in a recruitment office as a receptionist. My
duties involved meeting and greeting clients and visitors, taking phone calls, audio and copy typing and
checking stock. I also had to keep the petty cash and mail records. Through this work, I developed my verbal
and written communication skills. I had to speak confidently to strangers and deliver clear messages. I
enjoyed working in a team environment. I believe the office appreciated my friendly manner and efficient
work.

Movies, also known as films, have several genres, but they are made in a similar way. Basically, a
screenwriter writes a script, which is the story of the movie with words that the actors and actresses will say.
Actors, actresses and directors read scripts to find out what to say and what to do. The actors and actresses
memorise the words and learn the actions from the script that they will say and do in the movie. The director
tells the actors and actresses what to do and a cameraman takes motion pictures of them.
When filming has finished, an editor puts the moving pictures together. Audio engineers record music
and singing and join it with the moving pictures. When the movie is done, many copies of the movie are made
and sent to the cinemas. An electric machine called a projector shines a very bright light through the movie,
and people sitting in a dark room see it on a big screen. After movies are shown on movie screens for a period
of time, movies are shown on television or on DVD disks so that people can watch the movies at home.

READING
I. Read the following passage and do the tasks.
LIFE IN THE FUTURE
In the future, many aspects of life will probably be very different in 2030. Here are the predictions about
some of them.
Entertainment
TV channels will have disappeared. Instead, people will choose a programme from a “menu” and a computer
will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read
newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometres away. By 2030, music, films,
programmes, newspapers, and books will come to us by the computer.
“Holographic Feedback TV” will have arrived. Holograms are pictures that have height, width and depth.
Simple holograms exist today and “virtual reality” games are already popular. By 2030, we will be able to
see, smell and touch the things that we see on television.
The environment
Water will have become one of our most serious problems. In many places, agriculture is changing and they
are growing fruit and vegetables to export. This uses a lot of water. Demand for water will increase ten times
between now and 2030 and there could be serious shortages. Some futurologists predict that water could
be the cause of war if we don’t act now.
Transport
Cars will run on new, clean fuels and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed of
the car and there won’t be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that
tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2030, the computer will control the car and drive it to your destination.
Space planes will take people halfway around the world in two hours. Today, the United States Space Shuttle
can go into the space and land on Earth again. By 2030, space planes will fly all over the world and people
will fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours.
Technology
Robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots – they don’t ask for pay
rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2030, we will see robots everywhere – in factories,
schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.
Medicine
Medical technology will have conquered many diseases. Today, there are electronic devices that connect
directly to the brain to help people hear. By 2030, we will be able to help blind and deaf people to see and
hear again.

Scientists will have discovered how to control genes. Scientists have already produced clones of animals. By
2030, scientists will be able to produce clones of people, and decide how they look, how they behave and
how much intelligence they have.

II. Choose the best answer (A, B, C, D) to complete the short text below.
The idea of a driverless car is not new. Now there are already cars on the road that can park themselves.
However, a truly self-driving car, one that can drive itself, is being tested by scientists and engineers.
Self-driving cars have already been tested on public roads. These cars not only record images of the road,
but their computerised maps view road signs find alternative routes and see traffic lights even before they
are seen by a person. By using radars and cameras, the cars can analyse information about their surroundings
faster than a human can.
In some of the tests, cars learn the details of a road by driving on it several times, and when it is time to
drive itself, it can identify when there are pedestrians crossing and then stops to let them pass by. Self-
driving cars could make transport safer for all of us by eliminating the cause of most of today's accidents.
Although self-driving cars may seem far-off, some people believe that there will be driverless cars in
showrooms in about 10 years.
