In the Beginning…
• Ancient Rome
begin as a group
of villages along
the Tiber River in
what is now Italy.
• Around 750 B.C.
these villages
united to form the
city of Rome.

we can broadly divide into three
groups:
(a) texts,
(b) documents
(c) material remains

• 1.Texts: Contemporary History(Annals), letters,
speeches, sermons, laws.
• 2. Documents: Inscriptions-cut on stone
(Greek & Latin) and documents on papyrus
scrolls-contracts, accounts, letters and official
documents.
• 3. Material remains: Buildings, monuments,
pottery, coins, mosaics etc.
