COMPENDIUM OF CONCILIUM LEGIONIS MARIAE
The LEGION OF MARY (Latin: Legio Mariae) is the largest Marian Catholic lay
association under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all
Graces and whose members serve the Church voluntarily in almost every country. It
was founded on 7 September 1921. The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of
God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active cooperation
in Mary’s and the Church’s work.
STRUCTURE OF THE LEGION: The basic unit of the Legion is called a
Praesidium, which is based in a parish. The terminology comes from the Roman
technique of protecting a particular area by maintaining a fortified garrison or military
line. The Praesidium is the strategic unit of the Legion, its centre of apostolic
influence. The first Praesidium of the Legion of Mary took place in Myra House,
Francis Street, Dublin, Ireland. A parish may have more than one Praesidium.
Members of a Praesidium must be active legionaries, who meet weekly and share
apostolic tasks in pairs. Frank Duff mandated that each Praesidium pray the rosary as
part of their weekly prayer meeting and also encouraged members to join the
Confraternity of the Rosary. After a successful period of probation, members are
called to make the Legionary Promise (this is only applicable for members over 18
years) which is directed to the Holy Spirit. In recognition of the importance of prayer,
the Legion has Auxiliary members who perform services of prayer on its behalf.
Above the Praesidium is the Curia, which supervises several Praesidia. Over the Curia
is the Comitium, supervising several Curiae — such as in a town or city. The Regia
oversees a larger area still, such as a state or large province. The highest level consists
of the Senatus which controls several Regiae in a country or very large territory. The
entire structure has its headquarters, called the Concilium, in Dublin. Each of the
levels has its individual officers and spiritual director, always a priest or religious. All
other offices are held by laymen or women.
The VEXILLUM LEGIONIS is an adaptation of the standard of the Roman Legion.
The eagle which surmounted the standard is replaced by the Dove, the emblem of the
Holy Spirit. Beneath the Dove, a cross-bar bears the inscription "Legio Mariae".
Intermediate between cross-bar and staff (and joined to the former by a rose and a lily)
is an oval frame bearing a representation of the Immaculate Conception (the
Miraculous Medal). The staff is set in a globe which, for use on a table, stands on a
square base. The whole design conveys the idea that the world is to be conquered by
the Holy Spirit acting through Mary and her children.
The TESSERA is the prayer card of the Legion of Mary. It consists of
the Invocation, prayers to the Holy Spirit, the Rosary, the Catena, and
the concluding prayers. These are the requested daily prayers of both
active and auxiliary members of the Legion of Mary.

FRANK DUFF Founder of the Legion of Mary was born into a
wealthy family in Dublin, Ireland, on June 7, 1889. While only 24
years old, he became aware of the extreme poverty in the cities of
Ireland and sought to make a difference by serving the poor in
Dublin through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. In 1916, aged
27, Frank published his first pamphlet “Can we be Saints?” In 1917
he came to know the Treatise of St. Louis Marie de Montfort on the
True Devotion to Mary, a work which changed his life completely. Along with a
group of Catholic women and Fr. Michael Toher, Dublin Archdiocese, he formed the
first Praesidium of the Legion of Mary. In 1965 Pope Paul VI invited Frank to attend
the Second Vatican Council as a lay observer. He was very devoted to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus and died on November 7, 1980, on a First Friday and is buried in
Glasnevin cemetery, Dublin.
EDEL QUINN was born on September 14, 1907, on the Feast of the
Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Kanturk, north Cork, Ireland. She was an Irish lay
missionary. Her ambition as a girl was to enter a contemplative convent, but illness
prevented her from doing so. At the age of 20, she joined the Legion of Mary and in
1936 was appointed Envoy to East Africa. Edel died on May 12, 1944, Nairobi,
Kenya and is buried in the Missionaries Cemetery.
ALPHONSUS LAMBE (known as Alfie) was born in Tullamore, Ireland on the feast
of St. John the Baptist, Friday, 24th June 1932. He was appointed
Envoy to South America in 1953 and left for Bogota, Columbia, that
same year. His devotion to Mary was outstanding, and he promoted
the practice of True Devotion to Our Lady, everywhere he went. He
died on 21 January 1959 the feast of St. Agnes, in Buenos Aires and
is buried in the vault of the Irish Christian Brothers, in the Recoleta
Cemetery.

FAMILY: O beloved Mother, the time has come, for your departure from our
home, your home also during your stay with us. Our lips cannot
express the joy overflowing in our hearts. Inspired by your love
Mother, you desired to be with us, even for only a while. Thank you,
Mother. Thank you. Come back some other day. We will wait for
you with profound ardour. Upon your departure, take with you our
hearts. Never allow us to forget nor stray away from your care now
and forever. Amen.

Jerome)
R: “Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart”
(Luke 2:19)

night in prayer to God”. (Luke 6:12)
R: Come, Holy Spirit, for love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, teach us how
to pray!

curse you, pray for those who mistreat you, do to others as you would
have them do to you. (Luke 6:27-28, 31)
R: Come, Holy Spirit, for love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, teach us how
to love!
V: “Whatever home you enter, first say, Peace be to this home! And if a
son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him”. (Luke 10:5-6)
R: Come, Holy Spirit, for love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, fill this home
with peace!
V: But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise
his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful
to me a sinner.’ I tell you; this man went home justified rather than
the other. (Lk18:13-14)
P a g e | 12
R: Come, Holy Spirit, for love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, be merciful to
me, a sinner!
V: “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me, cannot be
my disciple”. (Luke 14:27)
R: Come, Holy Spirit, for love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, give us the
strength to bear our cross!
V: "Then he withdrew from them, about a stone's throw away, and knelt
down and prayed." "Father,' he said, 'if you are willing, take this cup
away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.'" "Then
an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.
In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the
ground like great drops of blood." (Luke 22:41-44)
R: Come, Holy Spirit, for love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may the
Fathers’ will be done perfectly in all souls!
V: Standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus
saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he
said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the
disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took
her into his own home. (John 19:25-27)
(Please kneel)
TO JESUS THROUGH MARY
V: “If we wish to go to God, seeking union with Him, we must use the
same means he used to come down to us to be made man and to impart
His grace to us. That means was a complete dependence on Mary his
Mother, which is true devotion to her. (Secret of Mary, (St. Louis Marie de
Montfort)
R: Lord Jesus crucified, we thank You and love You: For not only did
You give us Yourself on the cross. But You also gave us Your Mother
Mary. Following the example of your beloved disciple John, we have
welcomed Your Mother into our home. Please, dearest Mary, make
our hearts burn with love for the Blessed Trinity; the Father, Son, and
the Holy Spirit. Teach us to look upon Jesus, whom we have pierced
by our sins.
P a g e | 13
We will say like Thomas the Apostle, My God and my all!” Three
times Jesus asked Peter the Apostle; “Do you love Me”? With you
Mary and Joseph, with Saint Michael the Archangel and all the Holy
Angels; with Saints Peter and Paul and all the Saints, we ardently
desire to shout our answer, “Yes, Lord Jesus, we do love you!” Make
our love grow greater day by day”.
P a g e | 14

us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.
FATIMA PRAYER

Heaven, especially those who are most in need of Thy mercy.

PRAYERS FOR ALL OCCASIONS
THE ANGELUS
V: The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary:
R: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary....
Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that
we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the
message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of
His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray: O God, who by the Resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
granted joy to the whole world, grant, we beseech you, that through the
intercession of the Virgin Mary, his mother, we may enjoy the happiness of
eternal life, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
PRAYER FOR PRIESTS by St. Therese of Lisieux
O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep all priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart
where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands which daily

touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Your
Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime
mark of the priesthood. Let Your holy love surround them and shield them from
the world’s contagion. Bless their labour with abundant fruit and may those to
whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and in heaven their
beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen

PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS by Pope Benedict XVI
Lord Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne, look
with love on grandparents the world over. Protect and support them! As they
grow older, may they continue to be for their families’ strong pillars of Gospel
faith, guardians of noble ideals and living treasuries of sound religious traditions.
Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and roles of
grandparents. Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents constantly in
your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers,
grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland, where
you await all humanity for the great embrace of life without end. Amen!
