Energy Conversion Systems Take-Home Final Exam

Instructions:

1. All students will have from Friday June 2nd until Wednesday June 7th to complete
the take home final exam.

2. The exam must be taken completely alone. Showing it or discussing it with anyone
is forbidden. Any similarity in the submitted solution will directly forwarded to the
department.
3. You may not consult with any other person regarding the exam. You may not check
your exam answers with any person. You may not discuss any of the materials or
concepts with any other person.
4. You must print the exam out; single sided printed copy is required.
5. You must turn in only a single completed original copy of the exam.
6. The exam should be submitted in person at my office
7. Again, all work you submit for credit must be individual, original, and free from
unearned advantage.

Problem one:

Energy conversion systems have many different forms. Write about the following energy systems
by including the working principles and the governing equations for each system:

1- Energy conversion in photovoltaic systems.

2- Energy conversion in fuel cells.
3- Energy conversion in solar collectors.

Problem Two:

The following figure represents the electrical load profile for a certain building that utilizes regular
electrical generator for energy production. As an engineer, you have been asked to build a
MATLAB® code that would represent an energy conversion system that will handle such load in
terms of time and response domain. Please use any required input data based on the
published literature. For example, you can use the data in the following article.

• Compare the results of you MATLAB code based on different types energy
conversion systems.

Notes:
• You have to define the role of each line in you MATLAB code and define the different
system components. Also, for this part you have to submit the M. File so I can check
the code myself.
• you can get two points bounce, if you build the system using MATLAB Simulink
tool instead of regular coding. Also, for this part you have to submit the M. File so I
can check the code myself.

Problem three:

Prove mathematically that for any energy conversion system that there is an amount of energy
loss plus an amount that will make sure the continuity of the system operation. How this will be
related to Carnot efficiency. Solve and example based on real case about this problem.
