Poetry The Road Not Taken
Poetry The Road Not Taken
In the poem, The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost uses many ways to relate his
poem to different things. The poem shows lots of similarities to The Road Less Traveled,
and he connects his poem to it throughout his writing.. There is also an intriguing hidden
meaning about his life choices and which road to take. We then see the author’s
intentions with writing this poem’s meaning to teach people about life.
One of the reasons Robert Frost wrote The Road Not Taken was to write a poem
that was similar to a poem called The Road Less Traveled. There are some clear
similarities between the two poems. For example, in line 1 of the first stanza, Frost
writes, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood”(1). This shows clear similarities to The
road less traveled. Both poems are about two roads you can take. They also share the
same idea that the two roads lead you to different places. Another explicit detail from the
poem comes from line 4, stanza 4. Frost writes, “I took the one less traveled”(19). This
line is very similar to the title, “The Road Less Traveled.” from this quote, we see the
author is connecting the two poems. This evidence shows that the poet clearly was trying
to relate his poem The Road Less Traveled. While Frost shows that his poem was meant
to be similar to The Road Less Traveled, he also shows that it has a metaphorical
meaning.
Another reason why Robert Frost wrote this poem is to explain a metaphor of the
different choices and ways that you can live your life, or in this case, what road they
should take. In the poem, the author talks about how different roads lead to different
places or events that determine your life. But at the end of the day, the road you take is
the road you stay on. More hard work and the harder path you take, the bigger the reward.
Take the easier one, less of a reward. “Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing
how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back” (13).
Finally, we see that Frost is trying to show that taking a new path in life may lead
to better things. One example is when frost writes when talking about the road less
traveled, “And having perhaps the better claim” (7).The author is trying to say that maybe
the new road may have better things. Also, when he says, “claim,” he could be saying
that he is the first one to claim that spot. He may be saying that being the first to do
something is better than being a follower. Another example is when Frost states, “I took
the one less traveled by, ‘And that has made all the difference’(19- 20). Frost is saying
that taking the less traveled road made a difference in his life. He is saying that taking the
new road makes, “all the difference.” Taking the less traveled road may lead to better
things in life. From this evidence, Frost shows the reader that he thinks taking the less
traveled road may lead to better things. Moving on, it is very easy to see that Frost relates
his poem to many different things.
Being very similar to The Road Less Traveled, we see the similar inspiration for
this poem. It’s about how there are many outcomes of life and how if you work harder
you get a bigger reward.
