“Oh the Places You’ll Go:” Starrett Early Learning Students Step-up to the Next Grade
BY AMANDA MOSES

Students in the Starrett Early Learning Center (SELC) hosted a

series of graduations from June 16th until June 23rd, where children
in 3K stepped to pre-kindergarten, and pre-kindergarteners moved on
up to kindergarten.
“Welcome to the stepping up celebration for the class of 2023,” each
teacher announced at the beginning of the stepping-up ceremonies.
One by one, the children marched to their seats dressed in their very
best attire as dozens of parents and family members whipped out their
phones to capture this moment in time.
For SELC Executive Director, Tammy Moore these ceremonies
represent the beginning of a child’s journey rather than the end. While
the road toward graduation was not easy, each of the students learned
the foundational skills necessary to take them on their next level of
learning. Whether that’s the days of the week or the ability to sit in
place while listening to their instructors. Manners and self-awareness,
friendship and teamwork, were all lessons taught at the SELC.
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men and
women,” Moore said, reciting her favorite quote from Frederick
Douglass.
Moore has often stressed the adage, “It takes a village to raise a
child,” and she reminded parents that their children’s education starts
at home, and they must continue to read and engage with them over
the summer.
The ceremonies ended with the distribution of certificates, and fun
dancing and eating cupcakes together.

Education Matters
Independence Day,
the 4th of July Facts

When: July 4th.

The fourth of July is the birthday of our nation. Today, we celebrate and
enjoy the freedom that comes with the event that made this day so special.
Thomas Jefferson, is the author of the Declaration of Independence. He led
a committee that crafted the declaration between June 11-28, 1776.
Jefferson and other representatives from the thirteen colonies, voted and
approved it on July 4, 1776. The document declared freedom for the 13
colonies from British rule. It currently resides in the Exhibition Hall of the
National Archive in Washington, D.C.

Did you know? The Declaration of Independence was not signed by all
representatives until August, 1776. To make it official, John Hancock,
President of the Continental Congress signed it. Now, can anyone guess
where the saying “put your John Hancock on it” came from!?!
Today, we enjoy the benefits of the freedom which the framers signed and
ultimately fought for. For us, it is a time for baseball, hot dogs and family

are enjoyed by almost everyone. You can see a beautiful display of

PS 346 Students Are Stepping Up

BY AMANDA MOSES

Last week, Abe Stark Primary School (PS) 346 held three
stepping up ceremonies for their 3K, pre-kindergarten, and
kindergarten classes.
From June 20th to June 22nd, the walls of school’s audito-
rium were covered in pictures of each class, balloons, and there
was even a small wooden archway with the letters “ABC” in
rainbow colors erected for the children to pass through as they
made their way to the stage for their performance.
The ceremonies all began the same, with the students danc-
ing their way into the auditorium, which was jam-packed with
eager parents, family, and friends clutching congratulatory
balloons. Additionally, the stepping up events invited the
children to wear matching t-shirts indicative of their grade (3-K

Over the Rainbow: Celebrating Stonewall Day and Pride Parade

BY AMANDA MOSES Pride Grand Marshal
Billy Porter
June marks Pride Month, an annual celebration of the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ) community.
During this time, advocates gather to bring awareness to the
ongoing struggle members of the LGBTQ+ community face, such
as banning queer books, anti-LGBTQ+ laws, and Drag Story Hour
(an event that invites local drag artists to read stories to
children and teens at local libraries, schools, and other
community spaces to help celebrate gender and diversity).
On June 23rd, hundreds honored Stonewall Day, an annual
commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall riots, at the Hudson
Yards with stellar musical performances and remarks by
renowned activists. Hosted by actress Angelica Ross, who
introduced performers Christina Aguilera, Johnny Manuel,
Kellen Stancil, Mila Jam, Netta and BETTY, and DJ Lina
Bradford.
There also were powerful speeches regarding unity,
sisterhood, and kindness from Chelsea Clinton, Laverne Cox,
Alok Vaid-Menon, Raquel Willis, Dale Soules, Valentina Sampaio, Julie J,
and more.
On June 25th, thousands of New Yorkers lined the streets of Fifth
Avenue waving the rainbow flag among plumes of colorful confetti in
celebration of the 53rd Annual Pride Parade.
NYC Pride organizers stressed that Pride is first and foremost a
protest, underscoring the continued battle for equality, freedom of
expression, and rights that all in the LGBTQ+ should have. This year’s
theme was “Strength in Solidarity,” and the Grand Marshals were Billy
Porter, asexual activist Yasmin Benoit, nonprofit leader AC Dumlao,
activist Hope Gisell, and
civil rights trailblazer
Randolfe “Randy” Wicker.
The parade route kicked
off on 26th Street and 5th
Avenue and proceeded
down toward Greenwich
Village, past Stonewall Inn,
and concluded at 14th
Street and 6th Avenue.

“It was freeing. It was exhilarating. Imagine just playing somebody
unhinged. She wouldn’t hurt a fly, but she’d snap your neck. So, there’s
something really exhilarating and fun and a little dark but it’s a horror
comedy. So, I’ve never been involved in a horror comedy. I’ve been involved
in a horror film and a comedy, but not both of them together,” Machado
added.
Jessica Pimentel, known for her role in the Netflix hit Orange is the New
Black, says that the criminal justice system is an ongoing topic because it
continues to dish out unfair sentencing for the Black and Brown
community.
“Yes, once again, we’re talking about a criminal justice system where
someone gets an unfair amount of time for something that is right now not
even illegal anymore. And you have people that are still serving sentences
for very minor nonviolent crimes. And it’s something that needs to be
looked at, corrected, and fixed. We have to figure out a better way,
especially for the people who are already in. We need to correct this and
give them their justice that they deserve, especially now since times have
changed and things have changed, especially in New York City,” Pimentel
said.
Additionally, Pimentel shares that the meat pies, called empanadas, can
be seen as a metaphor for eating away or fighting back against
gentrification.

Mein Noodle Cookies Final Step: Share!

BY DEBORAH HURTADO

Prep time: 1 Hr 30 Min

Serves: A big group!

Ingredients
3/4 cups of chunky peanut butter
2 pkg chow mein noodles (5 oz each)
1 pkg marshmallows (10 oz)
1/4 c butter or margarine
1 c butterscotch morsels
1 chocolate candy bar, melted to drizzle (4.4 oz)

Directions
Test Kitchen Tips: Be careful to not have your stove too hot when
melting the butterscotch mixture or it will burn and seize up. You
may not need the entire second can of noodles. We suggest starting
with half the can to make it easier to coat the noodles.

1. Melt butter in a 5 qt saucepan swirling around to coat the sides

and bottom.
2. Over low heat, add peanut butter and 1 cup of butterscotch
morsels.
