PRACTICE TEST 2
Answer all questions. Show all the steps in your working of each problem.

Question 1
(Topic: Work & Energy)

The system shown is at rest when a constant force of 100 N is applied to collar B.
(a) If the force acts through the entire motion, determine the speed of collar B as it strikes the
support at C.
(b) What is the distance 𝑑𝑑 when the 100-N force is removed if the collar is to reach support C with
zero velocity?

Question 2
(Topic: Work & Energy)

The system shown is at rest when a constant pulling

force P of 300 N is applied to block A. By neglecting
the masses of the pulleys and the effect of friction in
the pulleys, determine (a) the velocity of block B after
block A has moved by 2 m, and (b) the tension in the
cable. Assume that the coefficients of friction between
block A and the horizontal surface are 𝜇𝜇𝑘𝑘 = 0.20 and
𝜇𝜇𝑠𝑠 = 0.25.

Question 3
(Topic: Rigid Body Kinematics)

A pulley and two loads are connected by inextensible cords as shown. The pulley starts from rest
at 𝑡𝑡 = 0 and is accelerated at the uniform rate of 2.4 rad/s2 clockwise.

At 𝑡𝑡 = 4 s, determine the velocity and acceleration of (a) load A and (b) load B.

Question 4
(Topic: Rigid Body Kinematics)

Three belts move over two pulleys without slipping in the speed reduction system shown above. At
the instant shown, the velocity of Point A on the input belt is 0.60 m/s to the right, decreasing at
the rate of 1.8 m/s2.

Determine, at this instant, (a) the velocity and acceleration of Point C on the output belt, and (b)
the acceleration of Point B on the output pulley.
