Earthquake

Earthquakes are natural disasters that occur when there is a sudden release of energy in the Earth's
crust, resulting in shaking and trembling of the ground. They are often caused by the movement of
tectonic plates, which make up the Earth's surface.

Earthquakes are primarily caused by the movement and interaction of tectonic plates. The Earth's crust
is divided into several large plates that float on the semi-fluid layer beneath. When these plates collide,
separate, or slide past each other, immense amounts of energy can build up. Eventually, this energy is
released in the form of seismic waves, leading to an earthquake. The following are some specific causes
of earthquakes:

 Convergent Boundaries: When two plates collide, one can be forced beneath the other, creating
intense pressure and triggering earthquakes.
 Divergent Boundaries: As plates move apart, magma rises to fill the gap, causing earthquakes
and volcanic activity.

The effects of earthquakes can be devastating and far-reaching, impacting various aspects of the
environment and society.

 Ground Shaking: The primary effect of an earthquake is the shaking of the ground, which can
cause buildings, bridges, and infrastructure to collapse. This leads to widespread destruction and
loss of life.
 Tsunamis: Underwater earthquakes can trigger tsunamis, massive ocean waves that can
inundate coastal areas, causing extensive damage and casualties.
 Landslides and Avalanches: Earthquakes can destabilize slopes, leading to landslides and
avalanches. These can bury communities, block roads, and disrupt transportation.

Earthquakes are natural phenomena that arise from the dynamic nature of the Earth's crust. While their
occurrence is a result of geological processes, their effects are deeply felt by human populations and the
environment.
