Jewish Visual Culture in the Balkans


This lecture will present the traces of Jewish visual culture in the
Balkans from antiquity to modern times. Jewish culture and, in
particular, its visual culture is a significant element which shaped the
Balkans as the place of connection and cultural transfer of the three
Abrahamic religions. The monuments considered will range from the
antique monuments of Stobi and Plovdiv, through Shabbatean

funerary monuments in Ulcinj and Niš


to synagogal art in Serbia and
Bulgaria from the 19th and 20th
century.
Jelena Erdeljan is professor at the
Department of Art History, Faculty of
Philosophy, University of Belgrade and founding director of the
Center for the Study of Jewish Art and Culture, Faculty of
Philosophy, University of Belgrade. She is decorated “Cavayera del
Ladino” and member of the European Association of Biblical
Studies.
