Problem Set 2-1

Strain

Directions: Answer the following problems and present a logical solution. Write legibly using
engineering lettering (upper case/lower case will do) on a letter sized bond paper with 1
inch invisible margin on all sides. Write your names on all sheets. Rewrite the problem. You
may not redraw the figure if you can present a logical solution without it, After finishing the
problem set, scan the sheets or take photos and send a copy to your class representative.
The file name of each problem set for each student should be as follows: Surname_SR
Code_PSet2-1. No other file names will be accepted. The class representative should then
compile an-d zip/archive the files and send to the class representatives’ group. Deadline of
submission is on 25-September-2020 at 12 noon. Once you have submitted to your class
representative, click the “Mark as Done” button on our google classroom for this activity. Do
not attempt to falsely click the “mark as done” button while not having to submit yet or does
not intend to do the work. I can track your submissions. Do not attempt to submit others work
as your own, rules agreed on course orientation will apply.

1.0 The elastic portion of the tension stress–strain diagram for an aluminum alloy is
shown in the figure. The specimen used for the test has a gauge length of 2 in. and
a diameter of 0.5 in. When the applied load is 9 kip, the new diameter of the
specimen is 0.49935 in. Compute the shear modulus for the aluminum.

2.0 The rigid beam rests in the horizontal position on two 2014-T6 aluminum cylinders
having the unloaded lengths shown. If each cylinder has a diameter of 30 mm.
determine the placement x of the applied 80-kN load so that the beam remains
horizontal. What is the new diameter of cylinder A after the load is applied using
Poisson’s ratio for aluminum is 0.35

3.0 The wires each have a diameter of ½ in length of 2 ft, and are made from 304
stainless steel. If P = 6 kip, determine the angle of tilt of the rigid beam AB.

4.0 The head H is connected to the cylinder of a compressor using six steel bolts. If the
clamping force in each bolt is 800 lb, determine the normal strain in the bolts. Each
bolt has a diameter of 3/16 in. If σY = 40 ksi and EST = 29 x 103 ksi, what is the strain in
each bolt when the nut is unscrewed so that the clamping force is released?

5.0 An acetal polymer block is fixed to the rigid plates at its top and bottom surfaces. If
the top plate displaces 2 mm horizontally when it is subjected to a horizontal force P
= 2 kN, determine the shear modulus of the polymer. The width of the block is 100
mm. Assume that the polymer is linearly elastic and use small angle analysis.
