Celeste Headlee has discussed the communication strategies that can improve our

communication strategies and build good relationships with people in TEDx talk. The
two rules that would help me improve my current communication level are explained
below:

1) Don't multitask
I believe that not multitasking would help me a lot in improving my conversation. In my
previous job, I always faced this issue. Being an Identity & Access Management
Operations Analyst, I and my team had to attend a lot of zoom meetings every day.
Apart from attending meetings, we had a lot of tasks on our plate. No matter how much I
tried I started lagging behind in my other tasks. As time passed by I got into a habit of
multitasking. I would be present in the meeting, put myself on mute, and be completing
my other tasks at the same time. It worked fine sometimes, but a lot of times I would
miss out on important information and then had to connect with my other team members
to collect that information. Sometimes, my colleagues had to ping me personally and let
me know that I was being asked a question in the meeting but I was on mute and not
replying. So, my communication and my performance had started degrading due to
multitasking.

2) Listening
Another important rule that would improve my communication is listening. As I
mentioned in the first point, I got into a bad habit of multitasking during communication.
This degraded my communication skills. I had stopped listening enough and as a result,
I always faced issues of lacking information. Most of the time I was clueless about what
was going on in the ongoing problem that we were to troubleshoot. I survived somehow
due to my experience in the industry. But I understand that this might not be the case
every time. So I must learn to listen carefully.
