a. Define a disaster and state its effects.


Ans- A disaster is a sudden calamity which happens
without much warning and causes immense
destruction to life and property.

b..What are the causes of a disaster?
Ans. * Rapid and uncontrolled urbanisation.
*Mismanagement of natural resources
*Urban and Rural poverty and unawareness.
* Fire mishaps due to human negligence,
and carelessness at hospitals and other public places.
* Faulty infrastructure , terrorism activities.
* Nuclear weapons and gas leaks.

c..What are the preventive measures to be taken


against floods?
Ans- Area must be evacuated at the first sign of the
warning.
Important items like food ,medicines, water, rope ,
torch and radio must be taken.

Electric appliances must be disconnected to avoid short
circuit which can result in fire.
Monitoring the television and Radio for updates of
weather forecast and warning.

d....What is an earthquake and what is the common


cause of an earthquake?
Ans- The sudden vibrations felt on the earth's surface is
termed as an earthquake.
The common causes are the movement of tectonics
plates and their collision, volcanic eruptions,
construction of dams.

e. What is a cyclone and how is it caused?

Ans-Cyclones are tropical storms that usually originate


over the oceans.
They are usually caused in winter over the oceans
when there is a low pressure area formed due to warm
temperature. Winds from surrounding areas or from
high pressure blow towards the low pressure, creating
winds to blow with high speed. Since they are blowing
from the sea they cause heavy rainfall in the coastal
areas.

f. What is a drought ? Mention the ways to avoid


droughts.

Ans . Droughts are conditions when there is deficient


rainfall over a long period of time characterized by
shortage of water, depletion of ground water and crop
damage.
The ways it can be avoided are.
 Conserving water through controlled use.
 Rain water harvesting.
 Using sprinklers to irrigate.
 Planting trees to replenish groundwater.
