PLANTING A THOUSAND MAHOGANY TREES: A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR ROADSIDE

“Save nature and nature shall save us”, the Provincial Local Government Unit of Tawi-Tawi
stands firm in the belief that nature plays a very important role in saving and protecting human kind.
Through various nature conservancy and preservation projects and activities, the PLGU shows its
affection and optimism for a greener, healthier and safer world.

During the Kick-Off Activity for the Celebration of Kamahardikaan sin Tawi-Tawi 2021, the
PLGU once again manifests its sincerity in environment conservancy by planting one thousand
mahogany trees in select roadside areas in the Municipality of Bongao.

The Philippine Mahogany (Toona Calantas), aside from forming attractive canopies, is
known for its dense wood and sturdy tree that can withstand strong winds, perfect for protection from
typhoons and other natural calamities.

Governor Yshmael "Mang" I. Sali, with guidance from the Provincial Agriculturist Ms.
Radjendra H. Tischer and team, manually collected the mahogany seedlings at Barangay Tubig
Basag together with some Sangguniang Panlalawigan members and personnel from different PLGU
departments.

TAWI-TAWI FISH PORT PROJECTED TO COMPLETE CONSTRUCTION BEFORE 2026

The first ever priority infrastructure project of BARMM Government in the Province of
Tawi-Tawi will soon to rise in the Municipality of Bongao. The Tawi-Tawi Integrated Fish Port
and Facilities, which will be considered as the biggest fish port in the entire Bangsamoro Region,
will be constructed in Barangay Pababag, making its municipality a sub-regional industrial center
for marine resources providing work and business opportunities and contributing to provincial and
regional economic growth.

During the survey of officials from PLGU and personnel from the Ministry of Public
Works (MPW) and the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy (MENRE) on its 13-
hectare intended lot, the Provincial Engineer and Provincial Planning and Development Officer
predicted the facility construction to be finished within five years, earlier than its expected
completion date.

Shown on its initial complex plan, as presented by personnel from the District Engineer
Section for Planning and Design, includes the provision of a multipurpose pier with roll-on berth,
powerhouse, administration building, market hall, refrigeration building, water tanker and treatment
plant, as well as banca-basnig landing. The completion of the project is believed to employ
thousands of locals and help alleviate poverty in the BARMM.

Bongao | Officials of the Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi together with the personnel from the
Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy surveyed
on Thursday the lot intended for Tawi-Tawi Integrated Fish Port and Facilities in Barangay Pababag,
Bongao.

Board Member Sabuddin Abdurahim, Chairman of the Provincial Committee on Public Works,
Infrastructure, Public Housing, and Land Use led the first survey of the 13-hectare coastal property
together with Provincial Planning and Development Officer Engr. Wahab Bakil, Provincial Engineer
Samil Tati, and MENRE surveyor Alijan Jani.

Engr. Al-Khaztaj Muyong, Engr. Binazir Malali and Fatimah Zahra Pingay from the District
Engineer Section for Planning and Design showed the initial complex plan including the provision
for a multipurpose pier with roll-on/roll-on berth, powerhouse, administration building, market hall,
refrigeration building, water tanker and treatment plant, and banca-basnig landing.
BM Sabuddin, Engr. Wahab, and Engr. Tati projected the port completed within five years following
a discussion on simultaneous facility construction.
TIFPF is a priority infrastructure project of the BARMM government making Bongao a sub-regional
industrial center for marine resources providing work and business opportunities and contributing to
provincial and regional economic growth.

Members join the international community kick-off for the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem
Restoration on World Environment Day.

PLGU CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

The Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi joined the United Nations Decade on


Ecosystem and Restoration (2021-2030) in its celebration of the World Environment Day. To
show their support, Provincial Governor Yshmael “Mang” I. Sali and his First Lady at the same
time Tawi-Tawi Provincial Women Council Chairperson, Hja. Jumda I. Sali, improved
agricultural areas and cultivated crops, such as cassava, in the Municipality of Languyan.

Meanwhile, various PLGU officials and other agencies, including the Office of Board
Member Atty. John Anthony L. Lim, Provincial Tourism Office headed by Atty. Pershing M.
Taiyab, Land Transportation Office, Provincial Sports and Youth Development Office, as well as
Inday Sara Duterte Ako Volunteer Support Group gathered together in a collective efforts to help
restore the degraded ecosystem through a coastal clean-up activity in Barangay Pahut, Bongao.

Through such activities, PLGU showed its support and oneness to the United Nations in
expanding restoration efforts to get back the function and breathe new life to our degraded and
destroyed ecosystems. For the next 10 years, the objective of the Decade is to promote global
cooperation for the restoration of our jeopardized ecosystem in order to achieve a healthier
future. Through extensive and pro-active restoration activities, people can gradually save mother
Earth and the coming generations.

up activity in Barangay Pahut in celebration of World Environment Day.

United Nations declared 2021-2030 as the International Decade of Ecosystem Restoration to


promote global cooperation for the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems.

“GREEN WORLD FOR GREEN SEA TURTLES”, PLGU and PRRD JOINS 3 RD ADLAW SIN
PAYUKAN CELEBRATION

Annually, the Municipality of Turtle Islands holds the Adlaw sin Payukan to celebrate the
island’s abundance of marine turtles. Besides being home to marine turtles in the Philippines and
a major nesting ground in the whole ASEAN Region, the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary is the
country’s remaining nesting rookery of green sea turtles (chelonian mydas), an endangered
species and the largest hard-shelled sea turtle.

On its 3rd year celebration, President Rodrigo R. Duterte virtually joined and addressed
the residents of the Municipality of Turtle Islands. "The celebration is an opportune time to be
reminded the importance of having a balanced ecosystem, helping to protect our endangered sea
turtles, preserving our rich natural environment as we look forward to a more hopeful and
promising future for everyone", PRRD said.

The event also highlighted the turn-over of the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary from the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources to the Ministry of Environment, Natural
Resources and Energy- BARMM. The Provincial Governor, represented by the Provincial
Tourism Officer, Pershing M. Taiyab, described Turtle Islands as not only vital to marine
biodiversity but also the political relationship between the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia
after the three countries signed a memorandum of understanding in 2001 for the conservation
and management of marine turtles and their habitats in the region.

Tourism Officer Taiyab highlighted that Turtle Islands is a potential ecotourism


destination in the southern Philippines that will help boost Tawi-Tawi’s image in media and the
web.

23 May 2021— President Rodrigo R. Duterte addressed the residents of the Municipality of
Turtle Islands during the celebration of the 3rd Adlaw sin Payukin in Taganak Island on Sunday.

In a pre-recorded message, President Duterte said "The celebration is an opportune time to be


reminded the importance of having a balanced ecosystem, helping to protect our endangered sea
turtles, preserving our rich natural environment as we look forward to a more hopeful and
promising future for everyone."
