Smith’s Medical is a leading supplier of medical devices used during critical and intensive care, surgery,
post-operative care recovery, and in a series of high-end home infusion therapies. It is focusing on
developing technologies that offer both clinical and economic advantages to its healthcare providers and
patients
Infusion therapy is usually employed to treat serious or chronic infections that do not
respond to oral antibiotics. Cancers and the pain caused by cancers; diseases of the
gastrointestinal tract; dehydration caused by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; and other
serious diseases, such as Crohn's disease, are typical examples. Additional complex illnesses
that respond best to intravenous medications include: multiple sclerosis, some forms of
arthritis, congestive heart failure and some types of immune deficiency disorders. Certain
congenital diseases require intravenous medications as well.
In medicine, infusion therapy deals with all aspects of fluid and medication infusion, vial
or subcutaneous application. A special infusion pump can be used for this purpose.
A fenestrated catheter is most frequently inserted into the localized area to be treated.
There are a range of delivery methods for infusion of drugs via catheter:
Intravenous
Subcutaneous
Enteral
Epidural
Spinal
Anti – arterial
