WELL COMPLETION REPORT OF BU’EE & SHANTO TOWN WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

1. GENERAL

Water is the most essential element to life on Earth, sometimes scarce resource
and yet Fundamental for a living. It is also essential for both agriculture in many
regions of the world and means to achieve sustainability in production systems.
Water demands in different parts of Ethiopia; particularly in Rural areas where
there is very poor water management & luck of enough water supply at these
towns, not to mention an increment population intensity, inside the main towns
and around, the client decided to exploit additional groundwater resources for
both towns after a detail groundwater resource potential study by our office,
(Blue Matrix Consultant)

Herein with, the SNNPR invite and encourages Contractors, (Nejmet Deep Water
Drilling & Construction plc) to participate on Drilling and construction of six (6)
deep wells, whose depth ranges from 300 to 350 meter depth, under the
supervision of our office, (Blue Matrix Consultant) three wells for Buee Town (BT-
PW-01-2019, BT-PW-02-2019 & BT-PW-03-2019) and three wells in Shanto Town, (ST-
PW-01-2019, ST-PW-02-2019 & ST-PW-03-2019), were proposed at different
localities of woredas for water supply of respective towns

Among the proposed six deep wells, five deep wells were successfully drilled and
completed starting from December, 2019 and completed on May, 2020, but
during this time the contractor drilled a total of seven wells and one well at
shanto (the 1st BT-PW-01-2019) were abandoned by the contractors’ Technical
problem, whereas (BT-PW-03-2019) drilling in Bu’ee town were rejected because
of financial problem from the client side,

2. LOCATIONS
Bu’ee Town is located 120 Km from Addis Ababa towards South West direction
along Addis Ababa – Butajira main asphalt road, Shanto is located 250 km along
the way to Sodo from Bu’ee town, also the geographic coordinate of borehole at
Bu’ee and Shanto towns are shown in the location map below under UTM
projection with Adindan Datum

3. DRILLING & CONSTRUCTION

As Per the contract Agreement for drilling and construction of five deep wells
have a target depth of 350 meter, Depending on the rate of drilling and
geologic property of samples from the well the drilling technique was
changed either MUD Rotary or DTH method,
Drilling of the Top most sections 10 – 30 meter where there was a fall and a
collapse zones of boulders during drilling were drilled by 17“ Drilling bit and
install a surface casing of 14” inch in diameter to protect collapse and
Pollution and further drilling after installation of surface casing continued up to
300 – 350 meter depth by 12(1/2)” to install 8” production casing

After Completing drilling, the effective depth of each wells were installed with
8” Blind and Screen Production casing were installed alternately where
appropriate up on the information gathered from Geophysical and
Lithological logging followed by Installation of observation pipe (1”) in size, this
observation pipe helps to detect dynamic water level of the well during
pumping tests
The annular space between an installed production casing and the well wall
was packed / filled with an appropriate size (9 – 12 mm) of Clean and
rounded gravel to filter the groundwater flow towards the production casings
finally the well becomes ready for development and Pumping Test

4. PACKING

Following the installation of casing the annular space between casing and
borehole wall was packed with selected and well sorted river gravel, 9-
12mm,diameter to filter the water entering in to the well and also to increase
the inter granular permeability around the well. The well is then developed for
15 - 30 hours by double compressed air until stable discharge is obtained and
the water gets clear from silts, clays and other turbidity. Finally, residual inert
clay back fill was placed above the gravel pack. Top of the clay back fill is
grouted with mass concrete to protect the entrance of polluted surface
water. Large quantity of water was continuously coming out from the well
forming wide-open space outside the surface casing and borehole wall. The
open space is estimated to extend down to the bottom of surface casing and
the continuously falling loose material ,like coarse gravel , in to the well
disturbed the drilling operation by stacking the drilling tools rotation system.
Hence, space is grouted by mass concrete and drilling work is resumed.

5. DEVELOPMENT
Before starting development by compressor, the well was added with
chemical called Sodium Tri-Polyphospate and wait for 24 Hrs, this chemical
helps to dismantle mud cake and Bentonite from the well, and start well
Development with the recommended types of development such as
Development by compressor, Development Double Tube, Development by
Surge Block, depending on the supervisor one of the development type will be
conducted until the water is clean from mud cake and other cuttings from the
well

6. PUMPING TESTS

a. Purpose
Pumping tests were conducted to determine the performance
characteristics of a well and the hydraulic parameters of the aquifer. For
a well performance test, yield and draw down are recorded so that the
specific capacity can be calculated. These data, taken under
controlled conditions, give a measure for the productive capacity of the
completed wells and also provide for the selection of appropriate
pumping equipment.
- The second purpose of pumping tests is to provide data from which the
principal factors of aquifer performance:-Transmissivity, Hydraulic
conductivity and storage coefficient can be calculated. This type of
test is called an aquifer test because it is primarily the aquifer
characteristics that are being determined, even though the specific
capacity and maximum yield of the well can also be calculated.
Aquifer test will predict;
- The effect of new withdrawals on existing wells;
- The draw down in a well at future times and different discharges;
- The radius of the cone of influence for individual or multiple wells.
Therefore, the pumping test of well may be considered as an evaluation
stage that includes the estimation of hydrogeological parameters, the
design and analysis of wells and the calculation of aquifer and well
yield. The aquifer yield concept is essential to understand as it decides
the maximum rate of water withdrawal that can be allowed without
causing a long-term decline on the water table of the region. Test
pumping of wells forms the base for any ground water development
strategy in a regional or local hydrologic system. Pumping test serves
many important purposes:
- Assessing the "design yield" of a well or an aquifer;
- Assessing the ground water quality through sampling;
- Obtaining information for pump selection;

BLUE MATRIX CONSULTANT ADDRESS :

2
WELL COMPLETION REPORT OF BU’EE & SHANTO TOWN WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

- Obtaining information for pump installation level;

- Obtaining records for future supervision;
- Facilitating maintenance of wells.

b. Methodology
Pumping tests will not produce accurate data unless the tests are
carried out methodologically by carefully recording the time,
discharge and depth.
The most common ones are step drawdown, continuous and
Recovery test mainly by constantly discharging or pumping a single
well or multiple wells. Nevertheless, it is also possible to conduct
variable discharge tests, as there are analytical methods as well.

c. Pumping Test Operation

Before the actual pumping test commencement, the discharge
capacity of the well was roughly estimated from a preliminary
pumping test. The test was conducted usually for not more than 2
hours; such test is conducted to estimate the maximum discharge
with the corresponding pump position

d. Step drawdown pumping test

Step drawdown test covers three steps each step lasting for 60
minutes. At the initial step the get valve was adjusted Discharge Q1
= ___ l/s and progressively the discharge rate increased to Q2 = ____
l/s and Q3 = ____ l/s and sometimes depending on the dynamic
Water level during pumping forth Step will be conducted
Table 1.Steps drawdown test format of Borehole
Steps Discharge Rate (l/s) Time, Min Total Draw
Down, ΔS, m

Step – 1 Q1 = ____ l/s 60 ΔS 1

Step – 2 Q2 = ____ l/s 120 ΔS 2
Step – 3 Q3 = ____ l/s 180 ΔS 3
Step – 4 Q4 = ____ l/s 24o ΔS 4

e. Constant Test
Following to the recovery made immediately after Step – Draw –
Down test constant pumping test has been conducted for maximum
of 72 hours with the maximum discharge rate of step – Draw – Down
Test, this data records during Constant Pumping Test will be analyzed
using Aquifer Test Software to get Hydraulic Conductivity (K),
Transmissivity (T) and Storativity(S) of the aquifer system

7. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS

The main purpose of water quality assessment is to measure Major Physio -

chemical constituents and assess their suitability for domestic and non-domestic

purpose. For this reason, analysis of major Cations such as Calcium (Ca 2+),
Magnesium (Mg+2), Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Iron (Fe3+), Manganese (Mn+)
and major anions such as Chloride (Cl -), Fluoride (F-), Carbonate (CaCo32-),
Bicarbonate (HCo3-), Sulfate (So42-), Nitrate (No32-), Phosphate (So42-) and Boron
(Br-) were conducted and compared to WHO standard. In addition general
parameters such as Electrical conductivity, pH, Total dissolved solids; Alkalinity
and Hardness of water samples were measured, analyzed and displayed with
appropriate diagram with the help of a software called Aquitest 4.0

8. WELL HEAD CONSTRUCTION

The final part of the well construction is the well head. Well head was done
according to the specified design as in actual fact to protect the stick up above
ground from breakage and Movement during pump installation including
capping of piezometer is constructed. But most importantly to avoid the rescue
of pollution and for sanitary purpose, the well head should be constructed with
special care with mixing ratio and quality of sand, water, cement and
aggregate are used with common dimension of 1m x 1m x 1.5m with 0.75m
bedded After the completion of well head construction, the well was sealed and
capped with a lid of 4 - 6 mm thick steel plate of the same diameter as the
conductor pipe was welded as security measure to assure
That no foreign object falls into the well before the well start to give the intended
service. An appropriate socket and plug will be installed in the steel cap to
enable static water Level observations through observation pipe.

After collection water sample from the well while conduction the pumping test it was
labeled, the label was comprised stated date, time and the depth from which the
sample was taken and handed over for laboratory chemical quality analysis. In most
cases the known standards have a direct
relationship with geology.
In general, the chemical quality of the well
water is fit to Ethiopian standard for house
hold uses and WHO. Check the result of the
laboratory analysis and summery of the
interpretation of the chemical analysis as
follows:-
The chemical analysis result of the water
sample collected during constant pumping

The final part of the well construction is the well head. Well head was done
according to the specified design as in actual fact to protect the stick up above
ground from breakage and movement during pump installation including capping
of Piezometer is constructed. But most importantly to avoid the rescue of pollution

8. Problem Encountered During Well Construction

There was no problem while drilling the borehole, the problem encountered during
electrical loggig activity were a collapse of the borehole at 170 meter where there
is a tuff & clay geologic formation, However become successful after washing the
borehole

9. Conclusion and Recommendaion

The following essentials may be concluded from the analysis of the drilling and pumping
test:
(i) The location of this water point is sloppy area, heavy runoff will damage the
well head construction, hence drainage structure nearby is recommended
(ii) The well has good discharge (yield), if the well have been drilled telescopic
and install 12” & 8” production casing the well would have a better discharge
(iii) The analysis verified that the well is a good yielding well at a reasonable
drawdown
(iv) Further drilling from 336 meter, will result bad water quality because of Iron (Fe)
rich basaltic formation
(v) The analysis result from the pumping test shows that it is advisable to set the
pump position above 116 meter, the discharge of the water would be higher
than 28 l/s.
(vi) The result of water quality for the measured parameters shows that the water is
rich in Florine(F-) and Iron (Fe) cathions, Treatment or disinfectant should be
recommended

5. Pumping Test Methods and Analysis

5.1. Provisional Pumping Test

The provisional Pumping test was conducted on 15-May-2020 that helps

to know the exact pump position of Submersible pump, in this well the
pump position was 110 meter head, and the discharge of the well
becomes 18 l/s after pumping for 2 Hours, then decision was made to rise
the pump position at 75 meter head to get a better discharge rate of
the well and start constant Pumping Test

5.2. Constant & Recovery Pumping Test

A pumping test start pumping test on 16-May-2020 to 18-May-2020 aimed at
the determination of well and aquifer characteristics
This Test was done for 40 hours without
stopping the Generator with the
maximum Discharge rate of the Pump
which was 22 l/s, and it helps to
estimate the Hydraulic Conductivity
and Transmissivity of the aquifer system,
such parameters are also calculated
using AquiTest 3.5 Software as shown in
the figure below. After the Dynamic
Water Level Stabilizes on 34.28 meter, a
Recovery record was done until the
water level comes back to the static
Water Level of the well hence the
recovery took 12 hours which is
moderate recovery

7. Well head construction

The final part of the well

construction is the well head. Well
head was done according to the
specified design as in actual fact
to protect the stick up above
ground from breakage and
movement during pump
installation including capping of
Piezometer is constructed. But
most importantly to avoid the
rescue of pollution and for
sanitary purpose with special
care is taken for the mixing ratio
and quality of sand, water,
cement and aggregate used for
the construction of the well head
have a trapezoidal shape with
horizontal dimensions of 0.50 m x
0.50m and 0.30 meter below surface 1.50
meter above surface

After the completion of well head

construction, the well-sealed and capped
with a lid of 9 mm thick steel plate of the
same diameter as the conductor pipe was
welded as security measure to assure that
no foreign object fall into the well before
the well starts giving the intended service.
An appropriate socket and plug installed in
the steel cap enable to observe static water
level through observation pipe.
Figure 2.8 well head Construction

8. Problem Encountered During Well Construction

- There was a circulation loss starting from 114 meter to 270 meter depth, no
sample was coming out from the well.
- Failure of submersible pump during Constant pumping test, and took a week to
replace the pump by a new one

3.2. Observation Pipe Installation

Observation pipes installed between the wall of the well and steel casing
before gravel pack. The total length of these 1(1/4)” galvanized steel
observation pipes is 167 m out of which 30 m are slotted.

3.3. Gravel Packing

After the completion of casing installation the annular space between the
wall of the well and the casing packed with a total volume of 17 m3 gravel.
The sizes of the gravels ranges: 6 – 9 mm.

4. Well Development

Well Development was held on from 29-Feb-

2020 up to 02-March-2020 to remove
detrital and cuttings from the borehole and
to increase the natural porosity and
permeability of the formation in the vicinity
of the borehole; well development is carried
out by compressor for only 15 hours until the
water becomes clean and silt/sand free.

5. Pumping Test Methods and Analysis

A pumping test crew and equipment mobilized and

start pumping test on 04-Feb-2020 to 11-Feb-2020
aimed at the determination of well and aquifer
characteristics.

5.1. Step Draw down Pumping Test

This Pumping Test was conducted to estimate
the well efficiency after calculating well loss
and Aquifer Loss using Aquitest 3.5 Software,
in three steps, each steps have taken 2 Hours
and the total hour for this test was 6 Hours, the
Discharge for Step – 1, 2 and 3 was 15 l/s, 18 l/s
and 22 l/s respectively
Figure 3.5 Conducting Pumping Test

I. Well Efficiency Diagram done by HANTUSH WELL LOSS

Figure 3.6 Well Efficiency Diagram

38
BLUE MATRIX CONSULTANT ADDRESS :
WELL COMPLETION REPORT OF BU’EE & SHANTO TOWN WATER SUPPLY PROJECT
The well Efficiency is calculated using a formula that include well Loss & Aquifer
loss as follows E = BQ/(BQ + CQ2)
Table 3.5 Well Loss & Aquifer Loss Data
No Steps Q, (l/s) Q, B C E = BQ/(BQ Remark
+ CQ2)
(m3/d)
1 Step – 1 15 1296 1.67E-03 4.20E-06 23%
2 Step – 2 18 1555.2 1.67E-03 4.20E-06 20%
3 Step – 3 22 1900.8 1.67E-03 4.20E-06 17%

This well seems to have lower efficiency, Since during Pumping the draw down
was not achieved for every 2 hour step pumping test, if the step pumping test
were done more than 2 hours, the well would have the maximum draw down
and achieve stable dynamic water in this case the dynamic water level is not
stable

5.2. Constant & Recovery Pumping Test

This Test was done for 30 hours without stopping the Generator with the
maximum Discharge rate of the Pump which was 22 l/s, and it helps to
estimate the Hydraulic Conductivity and Transmissivity of the aquifer system,
such parameters are also calculated using AquiTest 3.5 Software as shown in
the figure below

After the Dynamic Water Level Stabilizes on 60.71 meter, a Recovery record
was done until the water level comes back to the static Water Level of the
well hence the recovery took many hours which was more than 30 Hrs

7. Well head construction

The final part of the well construction is the well head. Well head was done
according to the specified design as in actual fact to protect the stick up above
ground from breakage and movement during pump installation including capping
of Piezometer is constructed. But most importantly to avoid the rescue of pollution
and for sanitary purpose with special care is taken for the mixing ratio and quality
of sand, water, cement and aggregate used for the construction of the well head
have a trapezoidal shape with horizontal dimensions of 0.50 m x 0.50m and 0.30
meter below surface 1.00 meter above surface

After the completion of well head construction, the well sealed and capped with a
lid of 9 mm thick steel plate of the same diameter as the conductor pipe was
welded as security measure to assure that no foreign object fall into the well before
the well starts giving the intended service. An appropriate socket and plug installed
in the steel cap enable to observe static water level through observation pipe.

8. Problem Encountered During Well Construction

- There was a circulation loss starting from 114 meter to 270 meter depth, no
sample was coming out from the well.
- Failure of submersible pump during Constant pumping test, and took a week to
replace the pump by a new one

8. Problem Encountered During Well Construction

There was a circulation loss, no sample was coming out from the well.

9. Conclusion and Recommendaion

The following essentials may be concluded from the analysis of the drilling and pumping
test:

(vii) The Submersible Pump Should be bigger than the one the contractor used for
Pumping Test
(viii) From the water quality analysis Result Iron is a bit higher than the value of
WHO, Therefore there should be an EC measurement during Drilling, so that it
is possible to detect and identify an Iron Rich zone of the aquifer
(ix) Drilling activity should not be on a rainy season, there was a problem of
moving items and materials during rainy time

3. Casing and Observation Pipe installation and Packing

The rock and soil samples were collected at 2m interval to prepare the casing
arrangement. Accordingly, outer diameter of 8” steel screen casings are installed
parallel to the most permeable strata aquifer, while the remaining depth is cased
with the same diameter blind casing respectively. Casing arrangements are set as
shown on table 5.4, the stick out of the borehole have both the production and
surface casing with one meter from the ground level to protect any additives and
contamination in to the well

5. Pumping Test Methods and Analysis
5.1. Provisional Pumping test

This test was conducted for only two (2) hour on 03-May-2020, after
putting the pump at 100 meter depth position, and the well gave only
20l/s, pump position was again raised to70 meter depth and makes
another provisional test for one hour, at this position the well gave 23l/s
with only 3 meter draw down from static water level

5.2. Constant & Recovery Pumping Test

This Test was done for 19 hours without stopping the Generator with the
maximum Discharge rate of the Pump which was 23 l/s, and it helps to
estimate the Hydraulic Conductivity and Transmissivity of the aquifer system,
such parameters are also calculated using AquiTest 3.5 Software as shown in
the figure below After the Dynamic Water Level Stabilizes on 51.4 meter, a
Recovery record was done until the water level comes back to the static
Water Level of the well hence the recovery took only one (1) hours which was
a fast recovery

6. Water Quality

Check the result of the
laboratory analysis and summery of the
interpretation of the chemical analysis as
follows:-
The chemical analysis result of the water
sample collected during constant pumping
test at 19 Hours shows that the water is
chemically Na-HCO3

7. Well head construction

The final part of the well construction is the well head. Well head was done
according to the specified design as in actual fact to protect the stick up above
ground from breakage and movement during pump installation including capping
of Piezometer is constructed. But most importantly to avoid the rescue of pollution
and for sanitary purpose with special
care is taken for the mixing ratio and
quality of sand, water, cement and
aggregate used for the construction of
the well head have a trapezoidal shape
with horizontal dimensions of 0.8 m x 0.8M
and 0.50 meter below surface 1.00 meter
above surface

After the completion of well head

construction, the well sealed and
capped with a lid of 9 mm thick steel
plate of the same diameter as the
conductor pipe was welded as security
measure to assure that no foreign object
fall into the well before the well starts
giving the intended service. An
appropriate socket and plug installed in
the steel cap enable to observe static
water level through observation pipe.

Figure 5.8 Well Head construction of ST-PW-03-2019

8. Problem Encountered During Well Construction

- There was a circulation loss starting from 70 meter to 310 meter depth, no
sample was coming out from the well.
- The drilling season was rainy time, hence a heavy rainfall stagers the drilling and
construction time schedule
-

9. Conclusion and Recommendaion

The following essentials may be concluded from the analysis of the drilling and pumping
test:

(x) If the well is reamed with 17.5 inch bit and install 12 inch production casing up
to 100 meter and the remaining depth was installed 8 inch casing, the well
would have given more than 40 l/s
(xi) The hydrogeology of the area has a good water quality than the rest of the
wells at shanto area, the two wells have rich in iron and floride, therefore
additional borehole near this site would be recommended to have a good
water quality of groundwater
(xii) During Drilling specially at a zone where there is no sample coming out from
the well, the viscosity of the Bentonite should be tested and checked to rise
the cuttings from the well
