LESSON

Appreciation of Persons with Disability and Underprivileged

Sectors

Introduction

A disability is a social imposition on people who have impairments,

making it more difficult for people to do certain activities or interact with the
world around them. Due to cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental,
physical, and/or sensory differences, disabled people are “unnecessarily
isolated and excluded from full participation in society, (Wikipedia).

Someone underprivileged does not have the advantages other people

have. Underprivileged people usually live in poverty. A privilege is a right or
an advantage, people who are underprivileged lack such rights and
advantages. Many times, this world is used as a synonym for poor,
(Vocabulary.com).
The meanings of Persons with Disability and Underprivileged Sectors

United Nations- the term persons with disabilities or PWDs are used to apply
to all persons with disabilities including those who have long-term physical,
mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which, in interaction with
various attitudinal and environmental barriers, hinders their full and effective
participation in society on an equal basis with others. However, this minimum
list of persons who may claim protections under the Convention does not
exhaust the categories of the disabilities which fall within the it or not intend
to undermine or stand in the way of wider definition of disabilities under
national law (such as persons with short-term disability in one society or
setting, but not in another, depending on the role that person is assumed to
take in his or her community. The perception and reality also depend on the
technologies, assistance, and services available, as well as on cultural
considerations.

Underprivileged Sectors- are people who have less in financial and

possessions and opportunities compared to other people in the society. They
were deprived or disadvantaged to learn and read or even government cuts.
They are families who usually live in poverty because they don’t have place to
live, money, education or food to survive in daily basis, (Brainly.ph). According
to the book of Ramos, she stated that the characteristics of representing
deprivation that encompasses are, income, health, education, empowerment
and working condition and the most common measurement of the
underprivileged is income, that defined into consumption of goods and
services. The World bank categorizes poverty into two levels: poor and
extremely poor. Those living below US $2.00/day are considered poor, while
those living below a US $1.25/day are extremely poor.

On July 4, 2021, The Philippine Statistics Authority released the latest
report on the country’s official poverty statistics for the basic sectors for 2021.
It estimated that poverty incidence for 9 of the 14 basic sectors identified in
Republic Act 8425, Social Reform and Poverty Alleviation Act using the income
and sectoral data from the merges Family Income and Expenditure Survey
and Labor Force Survey that the constant highest poverty incidences among
nine basic sectors are the fishermen, farmers, and children. Compared to
2012, 5 of the 9 basic sectors consisting of fishermen, farmers, children, self-
employed, unpaid family workers and women, have the higher poverty
incidence than the general population estimated at 25.2 percent.

How can philosophy help you evaluate your appreciation to persons with
disability and underprivileged sectors?

In the previous lesson about intersubjectivity, one of the important

values related to the subject matter is the acceptance of differences and
embracing diversity. Each person is unique, and differences exists among
groups of people, therefore we understood that when we look at physical traits
and even behavior of others, we can see that no two persons looks and think
the same. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD),
states that all persons with all types of disabilities must enjoy all human
rights and fundamental freedoms. This simply means that all persons
regardless of his or her abilities and disabilities must enjoy and must have
the equal treatment to all aspects. This follows the works for decades of United
Nations to change attitudes and approaches to persons with disabilities. We
must accept that people will have different views and beliefs. What unites us
all is our shared humanity and dignity, (Abella 2016).

Virtualahan aims to be a
leader in creating a work
environment that empowers
PWDs to join the workforce in
the Philippines. Their
ambitions reach beyond
people with disabilities as
they aim to launch projects
that include indigenous
people of Sultan Kudarat and
former drug dependents -
fostering a truly diverse and
inclusive workplace.

The recognition of our shared humanity and dignity is what drives us

to extend assistance and act with concern towards others, especially toward
individuals or groups that experiences hardships and discrimination. For
instance, those who are physically and mentally challenged often experience
hardships because of their condition. We have to realize, however, that these
individuals, despite their limitations, can have the same skills as those who
are fully able in mind and body. They also have hopes and aspirations like us
and many of them have successfully transcended their abilities to become
productive and happy individuals. Examples of people with disabilities who
have successfully risen above their physical limitations to live productive lives
include Helen Keller, Nick Vujicic, and Roselle Ambubuyog.

Various advocacies supporting persons with disabilities have resulted

in the institution of events and commemorations such as the Paralympics, an
international sports competition modeled after the Olympics that features
athletes with disabilities. In many of these events, people with disabilities
come together to showcase their abilities and talents in talent shows.
Symposiums, and conventions. These events bring together “able” and
“disabled” people in the spirit of friendship and cooperation.
Another group of people who experience hardship and discrimination
are the underprivileged. They have the less in terms of material possessions.
Despite the differences in lifestyle, social class and experiences, our shared
humanity allows us to engage with each other respectfully and render
assistance to each other. The act of assistance or giving, however, must be
done on the spirit of mutual respect. One must extend help wholeheartedly,
without reservation or a patronizing attitude. We help those in need not
because we need to feel better about ourselves, but we do it out of an
obligation to uphold the dignity of our fellow persons.

Apart from people with disabilities and the underprivileged, there are
also others who are left out or isolated from groups or society because they
have been deemed different, (Abella 2016). There is growing recognition that
income poverty is not only important measure of deprivation. Poor health is
also an important aspect of poverty. Globally, millions die due to AIDS, Ebola
virus, tuberculosis, and malaria as well as number of infant deaths from
largely preventable causes of diarrheal disease, Health deprivation had
become focal point for underprivileged, (Raacknmos, 2016).

Economically, poverty is when people do not meet basic certain

requirements for a better living condition, for example: food, clothing, and
shelter. In rural areas, the only way people can earn income is through
agriculture, therefore, depending on the existing of farming and fishing. These
people are forced to work in agricultural areas because they don 't get enough
education, or don 't get education at all. This causes poverty and
unemployment to be much higher with indigenous…,

Who among your classmates is considered by many to be “weird” or

different”? How does this view affect the way you treat this classmate? Do you
see yourself befriending him or her? If you reflect on the way you relate to
your classmate, can you say that you have been treating him or her as a
person? Reflecting on our interactions can better inform us of the motivations
that drive us to reach out and interact with others. Knowledge of our capacity
for intersubjectivity and the opportunities it provides for fostering personal
growth and welfare will enable us to make better choices and decisions as we
continue to relate with others and uphold positive relationship in our lives.

WRAP-UP

If we accept difference and embrace diversity, we can fully understand

that each person is unique and that no two persons looks and think the same.
Such recognition of the persons with disabilities and underprivileged will gear
us towards extending assistance and acts to alleviate their hardships and
diminish discriminations they are experiencing. We also need to understand
that these individuals, despite their limitations, have the skills and abilities
as those who are fully able in mind and body and most especially, like us,
they have also hoped and aspirations in life.

VALUING

Persons with disabilities and underprivileged sectors is also part of the

society that have roles and responsibilities to share and contribute to the
community. Due to their limitations and lack of opportunities, we can extend
and include them as they have all the rights and privileges in all aspects. The
way we perceive and approach them is the reflection of how we were educated
and our views in life that we can inherit for the next generation. We can
change things the way that is not suited in present, moreover, we should be
the catalyst of change and be a good example to the community.
