RESEARCH
RESEARCH BACKGROUND
At ground-level, O3 is seen in the form of a secondary atmospheric pollutant
created by several chemical reactions that are typically linked to degradation
of air quality in the air [3], which leads to adverse effects on the health of
human beings, crop production, material quality, and ecosystems.
Ground-level ozone (O3) is an important component of the atmosphere
because it is a major oxidant and a greenhouse gas [1,2].
High concentration of ground-level ozone can affect human health via short-
term and long-term impacts.
In this research, the main aim was to analyse the variation of ground level-
ozone concentration by using the spatio-temporal variability of O3
concentrations with the help of the secondary O3 data with trace gases (i.e
NOx, NO, NO2, CO, SO2, PM10) and weather parameters (i.e., temperature,
solar radiation, relative humidity, and wind speed), taking into account the
whole O3 distribution.
Next, this research also aims to analyse the association of ground level ozone
with its precursors and the weather parameter during daytime and night-time
using non-linear corelation.
Due to lack of ground level ozone study, none of us can predict the ozone
level model during high particulate event in the west coast peninsular
Malaysia.
Many studies focus on the effect of ground level ozone rather than
compare both during HPE and non HPE.The source of ground-level ozone
is created by emissions from vehicles, power stations, industrial boilers,

PROBLEM
refineries, and chemical factories.
Moreover, there is less research focused on correlation factors that
contribute ground-level ozone and its anthropogenic precursors in urban
STATEMENT areas in Malaysia.
Most of the studies in Malaysia focused at Klang Valley which has mostly
focused on variation in average ozone concentrations and predictions
(Ghazali, Ramli Yahaya, 2014).
There is very limited research was conducted to investigate the
relationship of ozone under gas pollutant, particulate matter and
meteorological parameters during HPE and non HPE in Malaysia.
It is very important to ensure that this research
will contribute to the environmental engineering
field of for the purpose to describe ozone level,
identifying model ozone level during HPE.
a) To compare ozone level during HPE and non
RESEARCH HPE.
b) To study the relationship of ozone level under
OBJECTIVES gas pollutant, particulate matter, and
meteorological parameter during HPE and non
HPE.
c) To model ozone level during HPE using linear
and nonlinear
The scope area for this study is Port Klang(Selangor), Seberang Perai
(Penang), Taiping (Perak) and Bandaraya Melaka as these four states
were situated in the west coast of peninsular Malaysia and facing the
area affected by forest burning in Sumatera, Indonesia.
Data will be collected during the year that Malaysia experienced high
particulate event which is 1997, 2005, 2013 and 2015 to look the trends
for the air pollution for each place by using Descriptive statistics, Boxplot,
Diurnal Plot, Time Series Plot, Contour plot and Air trajectories/Wind
SCOPE OF roses.
To study the relationship of ozone level under gas pollutant, particulate
RESEARCH matter, and meteorological parameter during HPE and non HPE, Principal
Component Analysis (PCA) has been calculated.
For prediction purpose, the nonlinear regression model will be developed
by Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) method.
The best outcome will be evaluated by using several performance
indicators such as normalized absolute error (NAE), root mean square
error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2) and index of agreement
(IA).The comprehensives of ozone studies are needed in predicting future
haze occurrences in Malaysia.
